Those games were distributed on CDs, and Sony’s current support guidance lists CD media as unsupported on both consoles. That makes the PS1-disc conclusion a format-based inference: Sony’s page does not separately name every original PlayStation game disc.
A PS5’s disc drive does not change that limitation. Its documented disc-game compatibility is for supported PS4 and PS5 games, not the original CD-based PlayStation library. To play a particular PS1 title on modern hardware, you must use an officially available digital version, another compatible system, or original hardware.

Why an original PlayStation disc does not work
The original PlayStation used CD-ROM game discs. Sony’s support pages for PS4 and PS5 list CD among the disc formats those consoles do not support for playback. Sony phrases the rule in terms of media formats rather than naming every PS1 game, so the statement that an original PS1 disc is incompatible is an application of that format rule, not a verbatim PS1-specific quotation.
That distinction matters because a PS1 disc is not equivalent to a PS4 game disc simply because both are optical media. The console must support the disc’s physical format, software structure and operating-system compatibility. A drive that accepts a disc mechanically does not imply that the system can read or launch it.

Can you play PS1 games on a PS4?
No—not from an original PS1 CD. Sony lists CD media as unsupported on PS4, which covers the format used by original PlayStation game discs. Inserting one will not install the game, launch it or turn it into a digital license.
This applies to both PS4 hardware revisions. A PS4 with a built-in optical drive can read the disc types Sony supports for that console, but the presence of a drive does not add CD game compatibility. A PS4 bought without a disc drive is not a relevant configuration because standard PS4 models include an optical drive; the decisive issue is the unsupported CD format.
Can you play PS1 discs on a PS5?
No. Sony’s PS5 media guidance also lists CD as unsupported. The conclusion for an original PlayStation game disc therefore follows from the same format limitation that applies on PS4.
PS5 models with an integrated or attached disc drive can play supported PS4 and PS5 game discs. That capability should not be read as support for earlier PlayStation generations. Sony’s statement that PS5 plays most PS4 games concerns PS4 software, not PS1 discs.

What about the PS5 Digital Edition?
The PS5 Digital Edition has no optical drive, so it cannot use any physical game disc. Even a PS5 model with a drive cannot use an original PS1 CD, because Sony’s supported-media list excludes CD. Buying a disc-drive model is therefore not a solution for PS1 compatibility.
What PS5 backwards compatibility actually covers
Sony says that more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus games available on PS4 are playable on PS5. That is a PS4-to-PS5 compatibility statement. It does not extend to original PlayStation software.
For a supported PS4 game sold on disc, Sony’s instructions are straightforward:
- Use a PS5 model with a disc drive.
- Insert the PS4 game disc.
- Install or update the game if the console requests it.
- Keep the disc inserted every time you play; the disc acts as proof of ownership.
PS4 game discs cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition. None of these steps applies to an original PS1 disc, because that disc is CD media rather than a supported PS4 game disc.

Does a detachable or external disc drive add PS1 support?
There is no documented Sony feature that adds original PlayStation compatibility through an add-on, replacement or external drive. Sony’s supported-media guidance still excludes CD, and the compatibility documentation does not say that a detachable PS5 drive changes that list.
Do not treat a USB optical drive, a generic HDMI adapter or a replacement internal drive as a compatibility fix. Such hardware may solve a connection or storage problem, but it cannot provide the PS1 operating-system support that the console lacks. The PS5 Digital Edition’s optional drive, where supported by that hardware configuration, should be understood as a way to use supported PS5 and PS4 discs—not original PlayStation CDs.
Official ways to play a PS1 game on PS4 or PS5
If the exact title has a current digital release, the practical route on these consoles is the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. Eligible classic games can be downloaded or streamed on PS4 and PS5 with a membership tier that includes the catalog in the reader’s region.

How to check whether your specific game is available digitally
Catalog membership does not guarantee that every PS1 game is included. Availability can differ by country or region, and titles can leave a subscription catalog. Check the listing immediately before subscribing or purchasing a plan.
- Identify the exact game title, including subtitle, release version and any regional name.
- On the PS4 or PS5, open the PlayStation Store or the PlayStation Plus area and search for that title.
- Open the result and confirm that it is identified as a Classics Catalog game rather than a trailer, soundtrack, remake or unrelated modern release.
- Check that the listing is available in your account’s country or region.
- Read whether the listing supports download, streaming or both.
- Verify which PlayStation Plus tier is required and whether your subscription is active.
- Review the listing again on the day you intend to play; catalog lineups and service terms can change.
If the search produces no result, that does not make the physical disc compatible. It means that Sony’s current catalog does not offer that title through the account and region you checked, or that the title is presented under a different name.

Downloading
A catalog download installs the eligible digital game on the console, subject to the membership and listing conditions shown by Sony. It still has no relationship to the original CD: the console is running a digital edition supplied through the service.

Streaming
Streaming runs the game from Sony’s service instead of installing the game locally. Sony’s support guidance gives 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed for Classics Catalog streaming. For 1080p streaming, Sony lists 15 Mbps and notes that the game must support that resolution.
Those figures are connection minimums, not a guarantee of image quality or uninterrupted play. Wi-Fi congestion, household traffic, distance from the service and local network stability can affect latency. If a title offers a download and your connection is unreliable, downloading avoids the need to maintain a live stream while you play.
Common questions about drives, discs and digital versions
“My PS5 accepts the disc. Why does the game not start?”
Physical insertion only confirms that the drive can take the disc. Sony’s software and media support rules still determine whether the console can use it. An original PS1 CD falls outside the listed supported formats.
“Will an adapter make a PS1 disc readable?”
No documented adapter changes the PS4 or PS5’s CD-game support. An adapter can change video output from older hardware, but it does not make the PS4 or PS5 execute the original disc.

“Can my original disc unlock the digital catalog version?”
There is no stated Sony mechanism that converts an original PS1 CD into a Classics Catalog entitlement. The digital listing and its membership rules apply independently of physical-disc ownership.

Bottom line
Original PlayStation discs do not work on PS4 or PS5. Sony lists CD as an unsupported format on both consoles, and the PS5’s documented backward compatibility is for PS4 games, not PS1 software. A current digital Classics Catalog listing may let you play the same title on PS4 or PS5, but it is a separate download or stream governed by catalog, region and membership rules.
