Original Joy-Con and the original Pro Controller can pair wirelessly. The original Switch dock cannot be used, the original AC adapter can charge Switch 2 only when connected directly to the console, and Switch 2 requires microSD Express for game storage. Original Joy-Con also cannot physically attach to Switch 2 or charge from it while attached.
What works with Switch 2 at a glance
“Compatible” can mean wireless pairing, USB operation, use with a particular game, or physical fit. Those are different tests. The following list reflects Nintendo Support’s named-accessory guidance for North America, checked October 13, 2026.

Original Joy-Con: usable, but wireless-only
Your original left and right Joy-Con can be paired to Switch 2 as wireless controllers. They remain useful for multiplayer sessions, games that need separate left and right controllers, and motion or camera functions supported by the game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe critical restriction is physical: original Joy-Con cannot slide onto or lock onto Switch 2. Switch 2’s Joy-Con 2 connection system is a different generation, so the old controllers must stay in your hands or in a separate grip while playing.
#1 Best Overall
- Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
- The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
- Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
- Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.
How to charge original Joy-Con
Because they cannot attach to Switch 2, original Joy-Con do not charge from the console itself. Charge them with an original Switch console or with a charging accessory that Nintendo identifies as compatible with original Joy-Con, such as a compatible charging grip or two-way charging stand. A charging product intended only for Joy-Con 2 should not be assumed to work with the older controllers, and the reverse is also true.
The Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Charging Grip is one example of the legacy charging approach: it is relevant when you are using original Joy-Con wirelessly with Switch 2, not when you are trying to charge Joy-Con 2. It is not required if you already have another supported charging method.
Pro Controller and classic wireless controllers
Original Pro Controller
The original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller remains a practical Switch 2 controller. Pair it wirelessly through Switch 2’s controller setup, then connect its USB cable to a USB port on the Switch 2 dock when it needs charging. Its compatibility does not make the original dock useful; the controller and the dock have separate compatibility rules.
NES, SNES, Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis controllers
Nintendo lists the NES controller as compatible for games that support it. It pairs wirelessly, but charging requires either a Switch console or a compatible charging stand. The SNES, Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis controllers are also listed for compatible games and can be charged through the Switch 2 dock with a USB cable.
These are not universal replacements for a modern controller. Their buttons, layouts and functions only work where the game recognizes that controller type. A game-specific compatibility label is therefore part of the answer, not a minor footnote.
Dock, power and TV-mode compatibility
The original dock is not reusable
Nintendo’s official statement is unambiguous: “The Nintendo Switch dock is not compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” Do not plan to use the old dock as a spare TV dock, a charging station or a USB hub for Switch 2. Use the Switch 2 dock for docking, TV output and dock-connected USB accessories.

The original AC adapter has one limited use
The original Switch AC adapter can charge Switch 2 when connected directly to the console. It cannot supply TV mode through a dock. If you connect that adapter to the Switch 2 dock, it will not turn the old power supply into a supported TV-mode solution; use the power equipment specified for the Switch 2 dock instead.

Use the Switch 2 HDMI cable
Nintendo’s compatibility list marks the HDMI cable included with the original Switch as incompatible and recommends the cable supplied with Switch 2. Keep the new cable with the new dock, especially if you are troubleshooting a blank TV screen. Swapping cables and docks from the old system can create a failure that looks like a console problem.
Storage cards: microSD Express is the generation boundary
Switch 2 is designed to use microSD Express cards for game storage. A conventional microSD card from an original Switch is not a general-purpose expansion card for Switch 2 games.
Nintendo gives conventional cards a narrow, useful role: Switch 2 can use one to view screenshots and videos captured on an original Switch. That does not mean the card can install or run Switch 2 games. If you are moving a library or buying additional storage, choose a card identified as microSD Express and follow Nintendo’s current capacity and formatting guidance for your region.
What happens to old Joy-Con attachments?
Most accessories that rely on the original Joy-Con’s rails or physical shape do not fit Joy-Con 2. Nintendo specifically excludes the legacy grip, wrist strap, wheel, charging grip, battery pack and charging stand from Joy-Con 2 compatibility.
Ring-Con and Leg Strap exceptions
Two game accessories have a narrower path forward. Nintendo identifies Ring-Con use with Ring Fit Adventure and Leg Strap use with Nintendo Switch Sports when original Joy-Con are paired wirelessly. The accessory is not becoming compatible with Joy-Con 2; the original Joy-Con remain the controller inserted into or attached to the accessory.

- Take your game sessions up a notch with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
- Handheld Nintendo Switch gaming at a great price
- Comes with charging cable (USB C to USB A)
This distinction matters when setting up a fitness game. If the game requires a Joy-Con to sit in a Ring-Con or Leg Strap, keep the original controller available and pair it wirelessly to Switch 2. Do not try to force Joy-Con 2 into a legacy attachment.
GameCube Controller Adapter
Nintendo lists the GameCube Controller Adapter as compatible in TV mode. Connect the adapter to a USB port on the Switch 2 dock, then use it with games that support GameCube input. The requirement for TV mode means this is a docked setup, not a direct handheld connection to the console.
Compatibility of the adapter does not guarantee that every game will accept GameCube controls. Check the individual game’s controller options when a connected controller is not responding.

A safe setup sequence for reused accessories
- Identify the controller generation. Separate original Joy-Con and the original Pro Controller from Joy-Con 2. Physical attachments and charging accessories are generation-specific.
- Use the Switch 2 console for wireless pairing. Open the console’s controller-management screen and follow its on-screen pairing instructions for the original Joy-Con, Pro Controller or supported classic controller.
- Choose the right charging path. Charge original Joy-Con with an original Switch console or a compatible legacy charging grip or two-way stand. Charge the original Pro Controller and listed classic controllers through the Switch 2 dock with USB where Nintendo specifies that method.
- Build a TV setup around the Switch 2 dock. Do not substitute the original dock. Use the Switch 2 dock, its supported power arrangement and the HDMI cable supplied with Switch 2.
- Install the correct storage card. Use microSD Express for Switch 2 game storage. Treat a conventional microSD card as media-viewing storage for original-Switch screenshots and videos only.
- Check the game’s controller support. Retro controllers, Ring-Con, Leg Strap and the GameCube adapter depend on game support in addition to hardware pairing.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
“My original Joy-Con will not slide onto Switch 2.”
That is expected. Original Joy-Con are wireless-only on Switch 2. Pair them instead, and charge them separately with an original Switch or compatible legacy charging equipment.
“The old dock shows no picture.”
The original dock is incompatible, so replace it with the Switch 2 dock. Also use the HDMI cable supplied with Switch 2 and the power setup intended for that dock.
“The old AC adapter charges the console, but TV mode does not work.”
The adapter’s supported use is direct charging of Switch 2. It cannot provide TV mode. TV output requires the Switch 2 dock and its supported power arrangement.

How to evaluate third-party accessories
Nintendo’s named list does not establish that third-party accessories work as a class. A third-party dock, charging stand, grip, USB accessory, HDMI cable or storage card needs model-specific confirmation from its manufacturer and, where relevant, Nintendo’s current compatibility guidance.
- Confirm whether the product supports original Joy-Con, Joy-Con 2 or both.
- Check whether it connects wirelessly, by USB or through a physical rail or slot.
- Determine whether it charges the controller, charges the console or merely holds the hardware.
- Verify TV-mode support separately from handheld use.
- Look for game-specific requirements when the product is a Ring-Con, Leg Strap, retro controller or GameCube adapter.
A product that physically fits original Joy-Con is not automatically suitable for Joy-Con 2, and a USB device that works in TV mode is not necessarily usable while Switch 2 is handheld.
What to keep, replace and label
Keep for wireless or game-specific use
- Original Joy-Con, provided you have a separate charging method.
- The original Pro Controller.
- Supported NES, SNES, Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis controllers.
- The GameCube Controller Adapter for compatible TV-mode games.
- Ring-Con and Leg Strap if you will use them with original Joy-Con in the games Nintendo identifies.
Replace or stop using with Switch 2
- The original Switch dock.
- The original Switch HDMI cable identified by Nintendo as incompatible.
- Any conventional microSD card intended for Switch 2 game storage.
- Legacy Joy-Con attachments when the controller inside them would be Joy-Con 2.
Keep as a limited backup
The original AC adapter can remain useful for direct Switch 2 charging, but it is not a TV-mode power solution. Label it accordingly so it is not mistaken for the dock’s required power equipment.

Switch 2 does not require you to discard every original controller. Original Joy-Con, the Pro Controller and several classic controllers can extend the new system through wireless pairing, while the GameCube adapter remains useful when connected to the Switch 2 dock. The boundaries are physical attachment, charging method, TV hardware and storage format: the old dock is out, the old HDMI cable is not supported, original Joy-Con cannot attach or charge from Switch 2, and game storage requires microSD Express. For any accessory not named in Nintendo’s list, verify the exact model and controller generation before relying on it.
