Not in the same way as desktop Chrome. Google documents Chrome profiles for separating bookmarks, history, passwords and settings on computers, but directs Chromebook users to ChromeOS account features instead. Add another Google Account when one person needs more logins, add a separate Chromebook user when another person needs isolated files and Chrome data, or use simultaneous sign-in when approved users need to switch quickly.
What “multiple Chrome profiles” means on a Chromebook
On Windows, macOS and Linux, Chrome’s profile picker creates separate browser environments. Each profile can have its own bookmarks, history, saved passwords, extensions and settings. Google’s Chrome Help describes profiles as a way to “keep all your Chrome info separate, like bookmarks, history, passwords, and other settings.”

Chromebooks handle that separation at the ChromeOS account level rather than by offering the same desktop profile workflow. Google’s desktop instructions specifically tell Chromebook users to use Chromebook account features. That distinction matters because the correct replacement depends on whether you are one person managing several Google identities or several people sharing one device.

Option 1: Add another Google Account for yourself
Choose this option when you are the only regular Chromebook user but need to use two or more Google Accounts. It is useful for a personal account and a work account, separate school and personal identities, or a second account needed by a website or an Android app.

The added account becomes available to ChromeOS-supported services. Google describes this feature as a way to use multiple Google Accounts at the same time or switch between them for websites and Android apps. It does not create a second Chromebook desktop, and it does not give you the full data separation associated with a separate person.
Steps to add an account
- Open the time and quick-settings area in the bottom-right corner of the shelf.
- Select the Settings gear.
- Open Accounts.
- Select + Add Google Account.
- Complete the Google sign-in and any verification prompts.
After setup, use the account or avatar menu to switch where ChromeOS offers that choice. A website may still have its own account switcher, so adding a Google Account to ChromeOS does not automatically sign you into every site.
Remove an account later
Return to Settings → Accounts, select the additional account and choose the removal option shown there. Removing an additional account from the Chromebook does not delete the Google Account itself; it removes that account’s local association with the device. If the account belongs to an employer or school, the organization’s policies may control whether it can be added or removed.
Option 2: Add a separate Chromebook user
Use a separate user when another regular person needs their own Chrome data and local files. Each user signs in with their own Google Account. Google says user files and Chrome data—including synced apps, wallpaper and bookmarks—are kept separate.
This is the closest Chromebook equivalent to separate Chrome profiles, but it is a ChromeOS sign-in boundary rather than a browser-only profile. Each person gets their own session, settings and storage view after signing in.

Steps to add a person
- Sign out of the Chromebook so the sign-in screen appears.
- Select Add person.
- Choose the appropriate setup, such as a personal account, a child account, or a work or school account.
- Follow the prompts and have the new user sign in with their own Google Account.
The device owner must permit additional users. On a managed Chromebook, a workplace or school administrator may restrict which account types can sign in, prevent additional users entirely, or limit the available choices. If Add person is missing, disabled or limited to organizational accounts, the owner or administrator must change the policy; reinstalling Chrome will not override it.
What stays separate—and what does not
- Separate: each user’s files, bookmarks, wallpaper, synced Chrome data and user-specific settings.
- Shared at the device level: some network and hardware-related settings can apply across users.
- Not a privacy guarantee: anyone who can unlock the Chromebook or whose account remains active may be able to switch sessions. Use a screen lock and sign out when handing over the device.
Option 3: Keep multiple users signed in at once
When two or more people need to work on the Chromebook without repeatedly signing out, ChromeOS supports simultaneous sign-in where the owner or administrator permits it. Google’s Chromebook help says that up to five users can be added to the active session.
Set up simultaneous sign-in
- Sign in to the first account.
- Open the account menu from the bottom-right controls.
- Select Sign in another user.
- Choose an already-added person and complete sign-in if prompted.
Repeat the process for the other approved users, staying within the five-user limit stated in Google’s help. Switch between active users from the avatar or account menu. ChromeOS keeps each user’s windows and data in that user’s session; the window menu also lets you move a window to another signed-in account when that option is available.
Important simultaneous-sign-in trade-offs
- You cannot sign out just one account: Google’s Chromebook help states, “If you’re signed in to multiple Google Accounts on your Chromebook, you can’t sign out one by one.” Ending the session signs out all active accounts together.
- The first account is primary: the account that signed in first is the primary user for that session.
- Play Store and Android app limitation: Google says the Play Store and downloaded Android apps are available only to the account that signed in first. To use those apps with another account, sign out of all accounts and sign back in with the desired account as the first user.
- Shared device settings can remain shared: network-related settings may apply to the active session even though bookmarks and profile pictures remain user-specific.
- Security still matters: every active account can be reached through the account switcher. Lock the screen before leaving the Chromebook and end the multi-user session when other people should no longer have access.
Option 4: Use Guest mode for a temporary session
Guest mode is appropriate for a short, trusted session when the visitor should not receive a permanent Chromebook user account. It is not a replacement for a personal profile: it is designed for temporary browsing and does not preserve the visitor’s normal Chromebook setup as a regular user.
At the sign-in screen, choose Browse as Guest if that control is shown. The owner or a workplace or school administrator can disable Guest mode. Chrome Enterprise documentation also distinguishes Guest sessions from ephemeral profiles, and organizations can manage whether those browsing choices are available. If Guest mode is absent, use a permitted user account rather than trying to bypass the policy.

Which alternative should you choose?
Choose “Add Google Account” when you are one person
Select this when the requirement is simply “I need another Google login.” It is the least disruptive choice for switching accounts on websites and using account-specific Android services. Remember that account access is not the same as a separately managed ChromeOS user space.

Select this when each person needs their own files, bookmarks, wallpaper and Chrome data. It requires a sign-out during setup and depends on owner or administrator permission, but it provides the clearest separation for a shared family Chromebook or a device used by multiple regular workers.
Choose simultaneous sign-in for quick handoffs
Use it when approved users need to keep their sessions open and switch without closing work. Plan around the five-user maximum, the all-at-once sign-out behavior and the primary-user restriction for the Play Store and downloaded Android apps.
Choose Guest mode only for temporary access
Use Guest mode for a visitor who needs short-lived browsing and does not need saved personal Chrome data. It is unsuitable for ongoing work, persistent bookmarks or a user who needs Android apps tied to their own account.
Why the expected controls may be missing
ChromeOS features are controlled at more than one level. A personal Chromebook’s owner can decide whether additional people or Guest mode are available. A work- or school-managed Chromebook can receive policies that control multiple sign-in, secondary managed accounts, profile behavior and private browsing.

Google’s enterprise guidance allows administrators to set Chrome policies for users or browsers. As a result, a work account may not be selectable as a secondary user, or the device may show only accounts approved by the organization. Check with the administrator when:
- Add person is absent or cannot be selected.
- Sign in another user is unavailable.
- Guest browsing is missing.
- A work or school account is rejected as a secondary account.
- The device signs users out or applies settings that differ from personal Chromebooks.
These are policy decisions, not evidence that ChromeOS is malfunctioning. Do not remove management, powerwash the device or create an unofficial workaround without authorization; those actions can erase data or violate organizational rules.

Separate users reduce accidental mixing of files and browser data, but they do not protect an unlocked device from someone who can switch accounts. Google’s Chrome profile guidance warns that people with access to a shared device may switch profiles and see browsing information. The Chromebook equivalents have the same practical lesson.
- Use a strong screen lock and do not share the sign-in credential.
- Lock the screen whenever you step away.
- Sign out all active users before lending the Chromebook or ending a shared session.
- Use a separate Chromebook user rather than merely adding another Google Account when another person should not see your local files.
- Review the account menu after setup so you know which identities are active.
- On a managed device, follow the organization’s account and data-handling rules.
Troubleshooting common scenarios
“I only want two Gmail accounts open.”
Add the second Google Account under Settings → Accounts → + Add Google Account, then use Gmail’s own account switcher or the Chromebook account controls. Adding a whole Chromebook user is unnecessary unless you also need separate files and Chrome data.
“My partner’s bookmarks and files are appearing in my session.”
Do not share one Chromebook user. Sign out, select Add person, and have each person use their own Google Account. The separate user boundary is designed to keep files and Chrome data apart.
“Android apps work for one account but not the other.”
Check which account signed in first. During simultaneous sign-in, the first account is primary and Google says the Play Store and downloaded Android apps are available only to that account. Sign out all users, then sign back in with the account that should control Android apps as the first user.
“I cannot sign out just one person.”
That is expected during simultaneous sign-in. Chromebook help says active accounts cannot be signed out one by one. Save work, then use the sign-out control to end the session for everyone.
“There is no Guest or Add person button.”
The owner or an administrator may have disabled the feature. On a work or school Chromebook, contact the administrator. On a personal device, sign in as the owner and review the available user settings.

Bottom line
Chromebooks do not use desktop Chrome’s multiple-profile workflow as the primary way to separate browser identities. Add a Google Account for another login, add a Chromebook person for genuinely separate files and Chrome data, use simultaneous sign-in for fast switching among up to five approved users, and reserve Guest mode for temporary access. The owner’s and administrator’s policies determine which choices appear.
