Milwaukee’s M18 CARRY-ON power supply (2845-20) turns four compatible M18 batteries into AC power, with manufacturer-rated output of 1,800 running watts and 3,600 starting watts. It can run suitable appliances or electronics within those limits, but it is not a whole-home backup system and must not be connected to home wiring through a wall outlet.
How Milwaukee batteries provide power
An M18 battery by itself is not a household AC power source. You need a device designed to convert battery power into the kind of electricity an appliance can use. Milwaukee’s M18 CARRY-ON power supply, model 2845-20, is the relevant option for AC loads. Milwaukee describes it as a portable power supply for temporary jobsite use and lists two AC outlets, USB ports and a pure sine-wave inverter. It requires four M18 batteries to operate. Milwaukee says the CARRY-ON can operate indoors and in confined spaces. That describes its portable use; it does not establish that the unit can connect to household circuits or power an entire home.

What can the M18 CARRY-ON run?
Milwaukee rates the unit at 1,800 running watts and 3,600 starting watts. Running watts are the ongoing power a load needs; starting watts cover a brief surge some motors require when they start. Check both figures on the appliance label or in its specifications. The total continuous demand of devices used at the same time must stay within the 1,800-watt rating, and a device’s startup demand must fit within the 3,600-watt starting rating.

Whether it can run a refrigerator, TV or other appliance depends on that specific model’s running and startup requirements. The product ratings alone do not establish a universal runtime or guarantee compatibility with a particular appliance. Available operating time also depends on the batteries installed, their charge and the load. Milwaukee’s product information does not provide one household-runtime figure that applies to every battery combination and appliance.
For phones and smaller electronics: M18 TOP-OFF
For phones, tablets, headlamps and similar devices, the M18 TOP-OFF (2847-20) provides USB charging rather than the CARRY-ON’s household AC outlet use. Milwaukee lists USB-C Power Delivery and USB-A ports and up to 115 watts of continuous power. It is a device-charging option, not an AC inverter for household appliances. Why this is not whole-home backup
The CARRY-ON’s portable outlets are for loads plugged into the unit; Milwaukee’s cited product specifications do not establish a transfer switch, a household-circuit connection or whole-home backup capability. If you need power at wall outlets or across home circuits during an outage, compare purpose-built portable power stations or professionally installed home backup systems for continuous and surge output, usable energy, runtime for your loads and the supported connection method.

Never plug a portable power source into a home wall outlet to energize the house wiring. This is called backfeeding. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that backfeeding can electrocute utility workers and neighbors. Its alert addresses portable generators, but the danger is the unsafe connection method, not a claim that the agency tested Milwaukee’s battery supply. Battery compatibility and safe use
Milwaukee says M18 batteries are compatible with M18 tools and chargers, and that authentic M18 batteries should be charged with Milwaukee M18 chargers rather than third-party chargers. Follow the instructions for the exact power supply and battery packs you use. The M18 Power Source operator manual says to use appropriate Milwaukee M18 packs and not to use the power source in rain, snow, or damp or wet locations. Do not confuse battery charging time with backup runtime. Milwaukee’s Super Charger figures are based on room-temperature testing, vary with the battery, charger and environment, and may differ in actual use. For example, Milwaukee lists 60 minutes for an XC5.0 and 25 minutes for a FORGE XC6.0 under those stated charging conditions; these are recharge figures, not estimates of how long the CARRY-ON will power an appliance.

How to decide whether it fits your outage needs
- Choose the CARRY-ON if you need portable AC power for compatible loads, have four M18 batteries available and can keep the connected loads within its output ratings.
- Choose the TOP-OFF if your need is USB charging for smaller electronics rather than running AC appliances.
- Look beyond M18 portable power if you need to energize household circuits, run loads beyond the CARRY-ON’s output limits or plan for a specific outage duration. Compare systems by their output, usable energy, supported connections and installation requirements.
If considering a fuel-powered portable generator instead, CPSC says it must be used outdoors at least 20 feet from the home, with exhaust pointed away. That combustion-exhaust warning does not apply to a battery-powered supply, which still needs to be used according to its own electrical and battery-safety instructions.
