Sometimes—but only if the appliance manual specifically approves that metal item for the mode you are using. A rack or tray permitted for Air Fry or convection is not automatically safe for microwave-only or combination cooking. Check the accessory chart for your exact model and mode before starting.
Why the cooking mode matters
A microwave air fryer combo can use different heating methods in different modes. Air Fry and convection cook with circulating hot air, while microwave-only uses microwave energy. A combination program may use microwave energy together with grill or convection, so its rules can differ from both modes on their own.

That is why “metal is safe in Air Fry” does not answer whether the same tray is safe in Combi. The manual must approve the specific accessory for the selected mode.
What manufacturer instructions show
Accessories can have different permissions on the same appliance
For Panasonic’s NN-CD88, the enamel shelf and wire rack are listed for grill, convection, Air Fry, and Combi, but not microwave mode. Its dedicated Air Fry basket is listed for Air Fry only—not microwave, grill, convection, or Combi. Panasonic’s NN-CD88 accessory chart shows why permission for one accessory cannot be extended to another.

Combination cooking has its own setup rules
Panasonic says the NN-CD88’s combination mode can pair grill or convection with microwave energy. Its instructions say to keep the glass turntable in place with the enamel tray on top unless otherwise stated, and not to use a metal accessory other than the one supplied. Panasonic’s separate enamel-tray guidance also distinguishes among programs: it permits the tray for Air Fry, broil, convection, and combo modes, but not microwave-only cooking. For its described Combo 1 program, it specifies microwaveable casserole dishes and no metal; for Combo 2, it gives a model-specific enamel-tray and wire-rack arrangement and says not to use metal dishes. Brand-specific exceptions are not general permission
Amana says, “Never use the metal baking tray during standard Microwave cooking cycles.” Its tray is designed for convection and combination cooking, and incorrect use can damage the appliance. Amana explains how to use its baking tray.

Instructions vary even for metal items that come with an appliance. Whirlpool allows some supplied racks, bakeware, or foil in limited circumstances, with conditions such as keeping metal away from the cavity walls and other metal; it also specifies separate accessories for grill and convection. Follow Whirlpool’s metal-use guidance only for the applicable appliance and circumstances.
Wolf says its supplied metal tray is safe in its MWC24 convection microwave, but other metal cookware should not be used, and that tray cannot be used in other Wolf microwaves. This is a model-specific exception, not a reason to try an ordinary metal pan. See Wolf’s MWC24 tray guidance.

How to check whether your metal tray, rack, or foil is allowed
- Find the exact model number. Use the label on the appliance and open its manual or manufacturer support page.
- Identify the selected mode. Check whether it is microwave-only, Air Fry, convection, grill or broil, or a named combination program.
- Look up the exact item. Check the manual’s accessory chart for the rack, basket, enamel tray, pan, foil, or other cookware you intend to use.
- Follow placement instructions. Observe any specified turntable, tray, rack, spacing, or other setup requirements.
- Leave it out if the instructions are unclear. Do not infer approval from another mode, accessory, brand, or model. Contact the manufacturer for guidance.
Why a microwave air fryer can spark
Metal used in an unapproved way may cause arcing or sparking and can damage the appliance. KitchenAid specifically warns that its supplied accessory racks can spark when used with the microwave function. If arcing occurs, stop and consult your appliance’s instructions before using it again; the recommended response can vary by model.

Removing a hot metal tray safely
Even when an accessory is approved for the selected mode, it can become very hot during cooking. Use heat-resistant gloves or other thermal-insulation protection as directed in the appliance manual.
