Halfbrick’s help center points to its terms of service but does not, on the page reviewed, state a specific license for reusing Jetpack Joyride music. Can you put the music in a YouTube video?
Only if you have permission or a license that covers the planned use, or a copyright exception that applies under the law where the use is assessed. A soundtrack purchase, playing the game, giving credit, adding a disclaimer, or calling a video noncommercial does not by itself establish permission. A license from a music service may also exclude video synchronization or monetization, so check its precise terms.
YouTube identifies permission, an applicable copyright exception, Creative Commons licensing, and its Audio Library or Creator Music as possible routes for creators. Could fair use protect your video?
In the United States, fair use is decided case by case using four factors: the purpose and character of the use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount and substantiality used, and the effect on the work’s potential market. Commentary, criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research may qualify, but naming one of those purposes does not decide the outcome. Music is creative material, and the excerpt’s qualitative importance can matter as well as its duration. The U.S. Copyright Office explains the four factors.
There is no automatically safe number of seconds, notes, or percentage of a song. The Copyright Office says the circumstances as a whole control, including how much is used and whether the excerpt captures a substantial or important part of the work. Its fair-use FAQ addresses the common misconception that a fixed amount is always permitted.

Fair use is a U.S. legal doctrine, not a universal rule. Other jurisdictions may use fair dealing or different exceptions, with different requirements. YouTube provides an overview of how copyright exceptions vary by location in its fair use and fair dealing guidance. If the legal outcome matters, consult a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction.
Why a YouTube claim is a separate question
YouTube’s Content ID systems can identify music and trigger a claim, but they cannot determine whether a use is fair use. A claim may arise even when a video uses only a few seconds. A claim is a platform action, not a court ruling that infringement occurred; conversely, avoiding a claim does not prove that a use is lawful. Assess two issues separately before uploading:
- Legal basis: Do you have written permission or a license for the composition and recording, or a defensible exception under the applicable law?
- Platform terms: Do the license and YouTube’s applicable music terms allow this use, including monetization if relevant?
If you receive a claim, review the claimed track, the claimant’s stated policy, and your actual license or legal basis before deciding whether to dispute it. A dispute does not turn an uncertain legal position into a guaranteed win.
Practical options before you publish
- Use music you have cleared for video. Obtain written permission or a license that explicitly covers synchronization, the intended platform, territory, and any monetization.
- Choose a platform-provided track. Check the specific Audio Library or Creator Music track’s current conditions; availability there does not mean every use or monetization arrangement is permitted.
- Rely on an exception only after assessing the facts. Consider the purpose, how much and what part of the music you use, and potential market effect under the law that applies. Do not rely on a fixed-duration rule.
- Keep records. Save the permission or license and its terms. If a platform claim occurs, those records help you evaluate whether the claim conflicts with the rights you received.
The available sources do not establish a probability that a Jetpack Joyride upload will receive a claim, a track-by-track reuse license, current availability at every retailer, or a physical soundtrack edition.
