Short answer: treat every GTA V mod as Story Mode-only unless Rockstar has explicitly authorized its use in a particular online environment. Rockstar’s current guidance discusses PC single-player and Story Mode mods separately, while its online-enforcement policy identifies modding in online games as conduct that can trigger account action. A mod that works harmlessly offline is not automatically permitted in the standard GTA Online service.
Before connecting to GTA Online, use an installation whose files have not been modified, and do not assume that deleting a loader or a few scripts guarantees safety. Rockstar has not published a universal, file-by-file cleanup procedure that guarantees an altered installation is safe for Online play.

The policy distinction that matters
Grand Theft Auto V has several play contexts, and Rockstar does not treat them as one policy category. Story Mode is the single-player environment where PC modifications have historically been discussed. Standard GTA Online is Rockstar’s live multiplayer service, with protected game data, an in-game economy and other players whose experience can be affected by unauthorized changes. Separately authorized multiplayer platforms, such as FiveM, operate under different licensing arrangements and are not the same service as GTA Online.

| PC Story Mode or single-player | Rockstar’s support article directs players to its Terms of Service, Creator Platform License Agreement and Mod Guidelines for this subject. A 2015 Rockstar Q&A said players should not worry about being banned solely for using single-player PC modifications. | Keep modifications confined to single-player play and retain the single-player and PC limits of that reassurance. |
| Standard GTA Online | Rockstar’s May 20, 2024 account-impact guidance lists modding in online games, exploits, money lobbies, account boosting or recovery, protected-data manipulation and interference with other players among conduct that can violate its Terms of Service. | Do not connect with an installation that contains altered or active mod files. |
| Separately authorized multiplayer platform | PC Gamer reported on May 26, 2026 that Rockstar and Take-Two identified FiveM as the authorized platform for GTA V multiplayer modding under the Platform License Agreement. | Follow that platform’s rules. Authorization there does not transfer to the standard GTA Online service. |
The Story Mode guidance was last updated September 15, 2026. It does not publish a complete list of every permitted mod, nor does it promise that any particular file, loader or folder is safe in every edition or configuration.

What Rockstar says about online modding
Rockstar Games Customer Support’s article “Impact of developing or distributing online mods, exploits or abusing the game or player experience on Rockstar Games accounts,” updated May 20, 2024, describes account suspensions as consequences of Terms of Service violations. Its examples include “including by modding in online games, exploiting or abusing game mechanics in online games, participating in ‘money lobbies,’ account boosting, account ‘recovery’, promoting methods of abuse/glitching, promoting modding of online games, manipulating protected game data and code, or interfering with other players’ gameplay experience.”
That wording is broader than “using a cheat to win a match.” It covers unauthorized online modifications and conduct that changes protected data, abuses mechanics, distributes online mods or harms other players’ experience. A cosmetic change that appears harmless to you is still not converted into an approved GTA Online modification merely because it does not visibly affect another player.
Rockstar also published a 2015 notice, “Update: Targeting Cheaters in GTA Online,” warning that installing or executing mods, scripts or exploits, modifying game files, or manipulating the game while it executes could result in disciplinary action. That notice is historical corroboration rather than the only current policy basis; the 2024 account-impact guidance is the more recent statement about online violations.

What a suspension or ban can do to your account
Rockstar’s “Online Suspension and Ban Policy,” updated February 24, 2026, says the action depends on the severity of the violation. A suspension takes effect immediately and displays an expiration date. During or after enforcement, characters and associated progress, property and inventory may be reset. The policy also says that another security action or violation following a suspension may result in a permanent ban.
A ban has no expiration date. Rockstar says access to online services and related account assets can become inaccessible or be reset, including characters, progress, property, inventory and virtual currency. These are account-level consequences, not merely a temporary inability to load a particular modded session.
No reliable ban percentage, detection rate or file-by-file risk score is established in the cited policies. Therefore, nobody can responsibly promise that a particular script “will definitely be detected,” or that a particular cosmetic file “cannot cause a ban.” The enforceable question is whether you are connecting to the service with unauthorized modifications or other prohibited conduct.

Why the 2015 “mods are fine” quote is often misunderstood
Rockstar’s 2015 “Asked & Answered: The Rockstar Editor, GTA Online Updates, PC Mods and More” included this statement: “This was not intentional, no one has been banned for using single player modifications, and you should not worry about being banned or being relegated to the cheater pool just for using single player PC mods.”

Three limits are part of that sentence:
- It was published in 2015, not as a current blanket approval.
- It refers to single player modifications.
- It refers to PC modifications and does not authorize altering GTA Online.
The same Q&A distinguished single-player modding from cheats and content that compromised GTA Online’s fairness and economy. Quoting only “you should not worry about being banned” removes the qualifier that makes the statement accurate.
Before you install a GTA V mod
Decide where the mod will run before you download or activate it. Use this checklist to keep the policy boundary clear:
Rank #4
- The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story.
- Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the dynamic and ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players.
- Identify the target mode. If the mod is intended for Story Mode, treat it as offline-only. If its description mentions online scripts, money, lobbies, exploits, protected data or changing another player’s experience, do not use it with GTA Online.
- Check the current Rockstar documents. Rockstar’s September 15, 2026 Story Mode support article points to the Terms of Service, Creator Platform License Agreement and Mod Guidelines. Read the current text that applies to your edition and platform rather than relying on an old forum post.
- Separate play sessions. Do not launch the standard Online service from a session in which altered files or mod components are active. A Story Mode mod’s offline behavior does not establish permission for Online.
- Plan for uncertainty. If you cannot establish that the installation is unmodified, do not connect it to GTA Online. Rockstar’s published material does not provide a universal cleanup checklist or guarantee that removing visible mod files eliminates enforcement risk.
- Use support for account-specific questions. If an account has already received an alert, suspension or ban, use Rockstar’s support process and preserve the exact notice. Do not attempt to evade an action by moving files or creating additional online activity.
Switching from Story Mode mods back to GTA Online
There is no official, universal sequence that Rockstar says makes every modded installation safe. The following is a conservative decision process, not a Rockstar certification:
- Exit the game completely. Close GTA V and its launcher before changing anything. Do not leave a script, injector or other mod component running while you attempt to switch modes.
- Do not connect from the altered state. If the game installation has been modified and you cannot verify a clean state, stop before selecting GTA Online.
- Restore an unmodified installation using the distribution platform’s normal file-management process. Rockstar’s policies do not identify a universal list of files to delete, so avoid treating a community-made removal script or a single deleted folder as proof of compliance.
- Keep Story Mode modifications separate from the Online installation where practical. Separation reduces accidental launches with altered files, but it is not a guarantee supplied by Rockstar and does not override the Terms of Service.
- When in doubt, remain offline. Do not test an uncertain setup with a valuable character, property or inventory. The suspension policy says those assets may be reset or become inaccessible after enforcement.
Deleting mods is therefore a risk-reduction step, not a promise that an account is cleared. The reviewed Rockstar documents do not say that a particular loader, folder or file is always safe or unsafe across every edition and update.
FiveM and other roleplay platforms are a separate question
FiveM is commonly mentioned in discussions about GTA V multiplayer modifications. PC Gamer reported on May 26, 2026 that Rockstar and Take-Two identified FiveM as the only authorized platform for GTA V multiplayer modding under the Platform License Agreement, while Rage:MP was to shut down. That report is secondary coverage of the licensing position, not a substitute for reading the current agreement.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Most importantly, authorization for a separately operated roleplay or multiplayer platform does not grant permission to inject those same files into standard GTA Online. Treat the platform, launcher, servers and rules as separate. A mod that is accepted on an authorized roleplay platform can still be prohibited when used to connect to Rockstar’s ordinary Online service.
Common situations and the correct answer
| Situation | Answer | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A graphics or vehicle change used only in Story Mode | Potentially within the single-player context, subject to the current Terms of Service, Mod Guidelines and license terms. | Rockstar’s support guidance addresses PC single-player and Story Mode mods separately. |
| The same files remain installed when GTA Online starts | Do not assume this is safe; use an unmodified installation before connecting. | Current Rockstar guidance identifies online modding and protected-data manipulation as sanctionable conduct, and no universal cleanup guarantee is published. |
| A script that changes money, rank, inventory or missions online | Do not use it in GTA Online. | Rockstar specifically cites money lobbies, boosting, recovery, exploits and protected-data manipulation. |
| A mod used on FiveM | Follow FiveM’s applicable rules and licensing conditions; do not carry the assumption over to GTA Online. | The platforms are distinct, and reported authorization for one does not authorize the other. |
| A 2015 forum post saying PC mods are allowed | Read it as a historical, single-player reassurance only. | The statement was limited to single-player PC modifications and predates current support updates. |
Bottom line for players
Use GTA V mods as Story Mode-only unless Rockstar explicitly authorizes the exact online environment. Standard GTA Online is governed by a policy that treats online modding, exploits, protected-data manipulation and interference with other players as potential Terms of Service violations. Suspensions can reset progress, property and inventory; permanent bans can remove access to online services and related assets.
If you want both modded Story Mode and GTA Online, keep the Online session unmodified and do not rely on a few deleted files as proof that an installation is clean. Rockstar’s 2015 reassurance protects neither online modding nor a permanent account outcome, and separately authorized platforms such as FiveM remain distinct from GTA Online.
