Usually, yes: a pass that is already saved in Google Wallet can often be opened and displayed without mobile data or Wi-Fi. Google explicitly says a boarding pass saved through its screenshot flow does not need an internet connection to be retrieved. That does not make every Wallet pass, issuer, region, or ticket scanner universally offline-compatible. Saving the pass, displaying its barcode, receiving live changes, and having a venue accept the code are separate steps.
What “offline” means for a Google Wallet pass
People often use “offline” to describe several different situations. A phone may have no cellular service, no Wi-Fi, or connectivity may be blocked after the pass has already been saved. In each case, ask three different questions:

- Can the saved pass be retrieved? For the documented screenshot-based boarding-pass flow, Google says yes after the pass has been saved.
- Can its barcode or QR code be shown? Google’s ticket instructions tell you to open the saved item in Wallet and present the code to an attendant.
- Will the latest information arrive, and will the scanner accept it? Those outcomes depend on connectivity, the issuer, the pass type, the location and the entry system. Google does not promise identical offline behavior for every pass.
Therefore, an offline pass is best understood as a stored credential you can display, not as a guarantee that the ticket is still current or that every gate will validate it without a network connection.

Can you open a saved Wallet pass without internet?
For a pass already stored locally, often yes. Google’s clearest published statement concerns a boarding pass added through its screenshot instructions: after it is saved, Google Wallet Help says, “You don’t need an internet connection to get your saved boarding passes.” The statement applies to retrieving that saved boarding pass; it is not a blanket promise for every ticket, loyalty card, identification document or issuer.

If you are already offline, open Google Wallet and select the saved ticket or pass. If the item loads and its barcode or QR code appears, you can present that screen. A pass that has never been added, was removed, or is still waiting for an issuer link cannot be downloaded after the connection is gone.
Can an attendant scan the pass while you are offline?
Google’s ticket guidance says to open the ticket and show its barcode or QR code to the attendant when tapping the phone is not an option. That gives you a practical offline procedure: display the stored code at a readable brightness and let the attendant scan it.
However, displaying a code and validating it are different operations. The scanner, gate or ticket provider may perform its own online check, enforce an issuer’s rules, or require a particular pass format. The Google help pages do not establish that every airline, venue, transit operator or scanner accepts every Wallet pass without connectivity. Follow the issuer’s instructions, and keep another permitted form of proof available when the trip or event has high consequences.
Will gate, schedule or event updates work offline?
Do not rely on them. Supported boarding passes can show live details such as gate changes and landing status. Live information requires the pass to receive new data from the issuer; a phone with no connection cannot be assumed to receive changes made after you went offline.

Before leaving coverage, open the pass and check the latest visible details. Reconnect whenever possible before boarding or entering an event. If an attendant announces a change that is not reflected on your screen, treat the attendant’s current instruction as more authoritative than an old offline display.
How to prepare a pass before losing signal
The safest approach is to complete every network-dependent action while you still have reliable service.
- Add the pass while connected. Use the airline, venue or transit provider’s supported Wallet option. If you are using the screenshot-based boarding-pass method, Google requires an active internet connection while adding it.
- Open the item in Wallet. Confirm that the correct passenger, event, route or date is shown and that the item remains in your Wallet list after you close and reopen the app.
- Display the code once. Check that the barcode or QR code is visible, not covered by a loading message, and large enough for an attendant’s scanner to read.
- Review current details. Check the gate, departure time, seat, venue instructions or other information that the issuer provides before you lose connectivity.
- Keep the issuer’s instructions available. If the provider specifies a particular entrance, identification requirement or alternate retrieval method, follow that direction rather than assuming Wallet alone is sufficient.
- Protect the phone’s ability to show the screen. Carry enough charge, avoid deleting the pass, and do not sign out of the account or reset the device immediately before entry.
These steps do not turn an unsupported pass into an offline ticket. They reduce the chance that you will need a network connection at the exact moment you reach a gate or checkpoint.
Adding a boarding pass with the screenshot flow
Google documents a screenshot-based way to save certain boarding passes. The important timing detail is easy to miss: the pass must be added while the phone has an active internet connection. Once the screenshot flow has saved the boarding pass, Google says an internet connection is not needed to retrieve it later.

Use this method only when it is offered for your boarding pass and follow the on-screen instructions. After saving, return to Wallet and verify the stored pass and its code before switching off data or entering an area with poor reception. Saving a screenshot or pass after you have already lost connectivity is not possible through a process that requires the issuer’s page to load.
Does offline behavior apply to every Wallet pass?
No universal rule covers all Wallet items. Google says availability of tickets, passes and IDs depends on the item, issuer and location, and not every issuer offers every Wallet feature.
A static loyalty barcode may only need to display an identifier. A boarding pass may include a barcode plus changing flight details. A venue ticket may have issuer-specific anti-fraud checks. Those differences affect what happens when the phone is offline and what the scanner expects. The fact that one saved pass opens without service does not prove that another issuer’s pass will do the same.

When an issuer does not support Wallet in your location, the pass may remain in the issuer’s app, email or website instead. In that case, Wallet’s offline behavior is irrelevant unless the provider gives you a supported way to save the item there.

What if the pass came from a photo or downloaded file?
Google supports creating some Wallet items from photos and converting certain downloaded files. That can be useful when an issuer provides a compatible barcode image or document, but it is not necessarily equivalent to a pass issued directly into Wallet.
Google warns that a downloaded pass converted into Wallet may have limited functionality and may not receive updates. In practical terms, the converted item might still show a code that you can present, while lacking the live data or issuer integration associated with a supported boarding pass. Verify the saved item and its code before travel; do not assume that conversion preserves every feature.

Common offline problems and what to do
The pass does not appear in Wallet
If the item was never saved, you need connectivity to add it. Reconnect and use the issuer’s supported add-to-Wallet route. If it was saved previously but is missing, check that you are using the same Google account and device profile, then consult the issuer’s retrieval instructions. Do not wait until you are at the gate to perform the first download.

Move through the pass’s details view and look for the barcode or QR section. If the code is still absent, the item may be informational rather than an entry credential, or the conversion may not have preserved the required data. Reconnect and obtain the issuer’s official Wallet pass or alternate ticket before you travel.
The displayed gate or schedule is old
An offline screen can only show the information stored before connectivity ended. Reconnect to refresh supported live details, and check airport, venue or transit announcements as well. Do not treat an old gate number as current merely because the pass opens successfully.
The scanner rejects the code
First make the code easy to read: raise screen brightness, keep the entire barcode in view, and avoid glare or a cracked section of the display. If rejection continues, ask the attendant whether the system requires the issuer’s original app, a paper ticket or identification. Google does not guarantee universal offline acceptance, so the issuer’s and venue’s rules determine the recovery path.
The phone battery is nearly empty
Offline availability does not help if the device cannot remain on long enough to display the pass. Charge before departure and avoid deleting the pass or changing accounts after it has been saved. If the provider permits a printed ticket or another credential, carry it when practical.
What Google does and does not guarantee
Google’s published guidance establishes a narrow but useful promise: a boarding pass saved through the specified screenshot flow can be retrieved without an internet connection. It also explains how to show a ticket’s barcode or QR code and describes real-time details for supported boarding passes.
Those pages do not promise that every pass type works offline, that every issuer supports Wallet in every location, that a converted file receives updates, or that every scanner validates a code without a network connection. Treat those as variables controlled by the issuer and the entry system.

A practical decision rule
- Already saved, code visible, no connection: open Wallet and present the code; this is the intended offline action for a stored pass.
- Not yet saved: reconnect and add it before you leave coverage.
- Need a current gate, schedule or status: reconnect before relying on the information.
- Pass made from a converted file: verify its code and expect fewer features or no updates.
- Issuer or location is uncertain: follow the provider’s acceptance instructions and carry an approved backup where feasible.
So, can you use Google Wallet passes offline? Often you can retrieve and display a pass that was saved in advance, especially a boarding pass saved through Google’s documented screenshot flow. Offline access is not the same as live updates or guaranteed acceptance: save early, verify the code, check current details while connected, and defer to the issuer and venue when their rules differ.
