Yes—but only if the doorbell explicitly supports Ethernet networking. Most often, that means a Power over Ethernet (PoE) model connected to an Ethernet cable at the door. A doorbell described as “wired” may only use existing doorbell wires for power while still sending video over Wi-Fi, so check both its network and power specifications before buying.
What “wired” means for a smart doorbell
Doorbell wiring can refer to power, network, or both. A low-voltage wire from an existing transformer can keep a doorbell powered without giving it a wired network connection. For Ethernet networking, the product specifications must explicitly say that it supports Ethernet.

For example, Reolink distinguishes its Wi-Fi doorbell, which connects over 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, from its PoE model, which uses Ethernet. A wired-power Wi-Fi doorbell still needs Wi-Fi for data.
Ways to connect and power a doorbell
| Option | Network connection | Power and checks | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| PoE Ethernet doorbell | Ethernet | Check the model’s PoE standard and power budget; route cable to the door. | Someone who can route Ethernet and wants a wired network connection at the door. |
| Ethernet with separate low-voltage power | Ethernet | Confirm the doorbell accepts the available AC or DC voltage and wiring. | Someone who can route data cable and has a compatible transformer. |
| Wired-power Wi-Fi doorbell | Wi-Fi | Check transformer voltage and Wi-Fi coverage. | Someone who wants continuous wired power but does not need wired networking. |
| Battery Wi-Fi doorbell | Wi-Fi | Check charging needs and the model’s recording limitations. | Someone unable to route power or Ethernet who is willing to use Wi-Fi. |
How PoE works—and why standards matter
With PoE, one Ethernet cable can carry both network data and power. Reolink describes its PoE doorbell as using one wire for network connection and power, with a PoE switch or injector as the source. Some models also accept separate low-voltage power while continuing to use Ethernet for data.
#1 Best Overall
- AI-Powered Smart Detection: Advanced AI technology accurately identifies people while filtering out vehicles and animals, so you only get the alerts that matter most
- Secure Cloud Storage: Protect your recordings with AES-128 encrypted cloud storage
- Pre-Capture Recording: Cloud subscribers benefit from pre-capture functionality, ensuring the camera starts recording right at the moment motion begins - never miss a thing
- Reliable 2.4GHz Wi-Fi Connection: Optimized for 2.4GHz networks to deliver stable, uninterrupted performance. (Not compatible with 5GHz Wi-Fi.)
- Exceptional Night Vision: Equipped with four powerful infrared LEDs and an advanced image sensor, providing sharp, detailed footage even in total darkness
Do not assume every PoE doorbell uses the same standard. Ring specifies IEEE 802.3at PoE+ for its Wired Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen), while Control4 specifies 802.3af for its C4-VDB-E. Match the injector or switch to the exact doorbell model and check that it can supply the required power.
What to check in product specifications
- Network: Confirm Ethernet is supported for data; “wired power” alone does not establish that.
- Power: Check the required PoE standard, or the acceptable transformer voltage and AC/DC type if using separate power.
- Cable route and clearance: Make sure Ethernet can reach the mounting point and the connector fits behind the bracket. Requirements vary: Control4 specifies Cat5e/6 or better and a 1-inch passthrough for its connector assembly.
- Chime: Check whether the existing mechanical chime works. Reolink says its cited PoE/Wi-Fi doorbell will not operate an existing mechanical chime as-is and recommends pairing its Chime. Ring says its current PoE model includes a Chime Kit Mini that replaces chime functionality.
- Recording and smart-home compatibility: Check the manufacturer’s storage, recording, ecosystem, and subscription terms for the particular model. The cited specifications do not establish a cross-brand comparison of these terms.
Examples of Ethernet doorbells and their requirements
Ring Wired Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen)
Ring lists Ethernet or Wi-Fi 6 on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. Its Ethernet power option requires IEEE 802.3at PoE+. Alternative power specifications are 16–24 VAC at 10–40 VA, with 30–40 VA recommended, or 24 VDC at 12 W. Ring recommends at least 15 Mbps average upload for its 4K devices. It says the PoE adapter must be indoors and estimates installation at roughly one to two hours.

Reolink Video Doorbell PoE
Reolink documents Ethernet with power supplied through a PoE switch or injector. It also lists 24 VDC or 12–24 VAC at 50/60 Hz as power options when Ethernet provides the network connection. Its support instructions say an existing mechanical chime will not work as-is and direct users to pair a Reolink Chime.

Control4 Chime Video Doorbell (PoE), C4-VDB-E
This ecosystem-specific model requires a Control4 system running OS 3.2 or later, Cat5e/6 or better wiring, and an 802.3af PoE injector or switch. Its connector assembly needs a 1-inch passthrough hole and clearance behind the bracket. Control4 says installation and maintenance should be performed by qualified technicians.

Plan the installation before ordering
- Choose the network path: Verify that the exact model supports Ethernet data, not just wired power.
- Trace the cable route: Confirm a practical route from the network equipment to the mounting point, with enough clearance for the cable connector and bracket.
- Choose a compatible power source: If using PoE, check the required standard and power budget. Place the PoE source and network equipment indoors where appropriate; Ring specifies that its PoE adapter must be indoors.
- Check existing wiring and chime requirements: If using a transformer for power, compare its voltage and wiring with the manufacturer’s instructions. Check chime compatibility before removing or changing an existing setup.
For the cited Reolink models, the documented transformer options are 24 VDC or 12–24 VAC at 50/60 Hz. Reolink notes that a chime bypass may be needed and warns that an incompatible or unmodified chime circuit can cause unstable operation or abnormal chime behavior. Turn off power before working on doorbell wiring; use a qualified electrician or installer for work beyond your experience.
Does Ethernet make a doorbell more reliable or secure?
Ethernet gives the doorbell a wired network path rather than a Wi-Fi connection at the door. The cited manufacturer documents explain supported connections and installation requirements, but they do not provide independent, controlled comparisons quantifying reliability or security in real homes. Treat a wired connection as a way to avoid Wi-Fi for that device—not as a guaranteed performance or security improvement.
