Keep the license, receipt, track identifier and relevant terms. YouTube says Content ID does not know that you bought rights from another website, so a claim may appear anyway.
None of these routes guarantees a claim-free upload. The rights in a composition and a particular recording may also differ, so make sure your permission covers the material you actually use.

Common assumptions that do not grant permission
- “I gave credit.” Attribution does not itself provide a license or establish a valid reason to dispute a claim.
- “I bought the song.” Owning a copy does not establish the rights needed to put it in a video.
- “It was labeled free.” A webpage description does not determine the music’s copyright status. YouTube says Content ID does not take written descriptions of “free” music into account.
- “I will not monetize.” Declining to earn revenue does not itself provide permission or a valid dispute reason.
- “It is only a few seconds.” The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a safe duration threshold. Do not rely on a supposed five-second rule; assess the rights and any applicable exception.
What does a Content ID claim mean?
YouTube describes Content ID as an automated system that compares an upload with audio or visual reference files submitted by copyright owners. A match can generate a Content ID claim. Depending on the owner’s policy, YouTube may block the video, track its viewership or allow the owner to monetize it; some policies can share revenue with the uploader. Policies may differ by territory, so availability and earnings can vary between countries.

A claim is not the same as a copyright strike. A claim may affect a video’s availability or earnings, but it does not by itself put a strike on the channel. A copyright strike follows a separate copyright removal request: when YouTube finds the request valid, it removes the video and applies a strike.
YouTube says music claims commonly use a monetization policy. Under current Help guidance accessed in October 2026, a claimed video longer than three minutes may remain viewable when the rights holder tracks or monetizes it. The same guidance says one-to-three-minute Shorts with active claims are blocked. Short-form rules can change, so check YouTube’s current Help guidance before relying on that rule.

Can I monetize a video with copyrighted music?
Possibly. The outcome depends on the rights you have, the track’s terms, the rights holder’s Content ID policy and YouTube’s eligibility rules. A claim may send revenue to the rights holder, affect whether the video is available, or allow tracking. Some policies may share revenue, but there is no universal creator percentage to assume.
Creator Music has both licensing and revenue-sharing options, with track-specific terms. A licensed track does not automatically clear other third-party material in the same video: YouTube says full monetization may be possible only when all such material is also licensed or otherwise cleared. Review the terms for every track and other protected material you include.

How do I remove or replace claimed music?
Start by reviewing the claim in YouTube Studio. Check the claimant, matched work, affected timestamps and any territorial restrictions. More than one claimant may assert rights to different portions or territories. An unfamiliar claimant name by itself does not establish that a claim is invalid.

- Choose an available editing option if you want to clear the claimed audio. YouTube lists trimming out the claimed segment, replacing the claimed audio with music from the Audio Library, or muting the song or all audio.
- Check the result before saving. If any claimed portion remains, the claim may remain. YouTube warns that Studio Editor changes saved since June 2025 cannot be reverted, so preserve a copy of the original video before editing and verify the final version before saving.
Can I dispute a copyright claim if I have a license?
Yes, if the license gives you the necessary rights for the use in question. You can also dispute if you believe a copyright exception applies or the match is wrong. Read the claim details and compare them with your documentation before deciding. A license that does not cover the video, territory or format is not a sound basis for claiming that you have the necessary rights.

YouTube’s Help guidance says the claimant has 30 days to respond to a dispute. YouTube does not decide whether you should dispute and does not mediate the underlying copyright disagreement. If you dispute without a valid reason, the claimant may request a takedown; a valid removal request can result in a strike. For an uncertain legal claim or a high-stakes dispute, consider advice from a qualified professional in the relevant jurisdiction.
What should I do if I receive a copyright strike?
A strike means YouTube removed content in response to a copyright removal request it found valid. YouTube Help guidance accessed in 2026 says a strike can expire after 90 days if you complete Copyright School. YouTube also lists retraction and a valid counter notification as resolution paths. A counter notification is a legal process; do not submit one unless you have a sound basis for doing so.
- One active strike: Review the notice and the available resolution options in YouTube Studio.
- Three active strikes within 90 days: YouTube says the channel and associated channels are at risk of termination.
- Live streams: YouTube says a live stream removed for copyright can also lead to a strike and temporary live-streaming restrictions.
