Why the answer depends on the firearm
Lubrication instructions vary by model and by part. GLOCK directs owners to consult the owner’s manual for lubrication points and amounts, and warns that excess lubricant can affect pistol performance. Its guidance does not establish that automotive grease is suitable for every firearm.

Springfield Armory manual snippets for the XD-S and Echelon warn against applying oil or grease to the striker. That warning applies to those models; it should not be generalized to all firearms. Likewise, permission in one firearm’s manual is not permission for another.

How to decide whether a grease is appropriate
- Find the exact model’s owner’s manual. Use the manual for the firearm you own, not a general lubrication recommendation or another model’s instructions.
- Check the intended part. Confirm the manual permits grease at that specific lubrication point. Do not lubricate a part the manual says to keep dry.
- Follow the stated amount and method. More lubricant is not necessarily better; GLOCK warns that too much can affect pistol performance.
- Check how the product is identified. If the manual calls for grease, a product specifically described for firearm use is a more relevant category than automotive grease, but it still must suit the manual’s instructions.
If you cannot find or interpret the instructions, ask the firearm manufacturer or a qualified armorer before substituting automotive grease.

When firearm-specific grease may fit
Fluoramics describes Tufoil Gun Grease for handguns, rifles, and shotguns, including possible use on rifle bolts, automatic slide rails, triggers, and metal-to-metal contact. Its maker nevertheless says to apply a small amount where the firearm manufacturer recommends grease. That product description does not establish compatibility with every firearm.
FrogLube’s product instructions also emphasize following the firearm manufacturer’s directions for lubricating the action and avoiding over-lubrication. They do not show that automotive grease is interchangeable with firearm lubricant.

Maintenance timing is also model-specific
As an example—not a universal schedule—GLOCK recommends cleaning and lubricating its pistols when new before first firing, after each time fired, at least monthly if unused, and after exposure to rain, snow, perspiration, salt water, dirt, or dust. Follow the schedule for your own make and model.
Do not confuse firearm advice with spray-gun advice
Graco’s grease and seal guidance is for spray-foam equipment, not firearms. Its discussion of application-specific grease and O-ring compatibility cannot establish whether automotive grease is suitable for a firearm.
