If you mean Apple Home, you can control a home that is already set up from some Apple devices without owning an iPhone or iPad—but you cannot use a Mac, Apple TV, or HomePod to add accessories or complete the initial Home app setup. Apple says an iPhone or iPad is required for that. A home hub helps with remote access and automations; it does not replace an iPhone or iPad for onboarding.
Apple’s official pages cited here describe Apple Home and the Home app, not a released product called “homeOS.”

What you can and cannot do without an iPhone or iPad
| Device or option | What it can do | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Mac | Control accessories in a home that is already configured, while the Mac is on the same Wi-Fi network. | Add accessories to the Home app or provide remote control by itself. |
| Apple TV 4K or HomePod | Act as a home hub for supported remote access and automations. Apple TV can also access scenes and cameras already configured through Home; HomePod can control configured accessories by voice. | Replace an iPhone or iPad for adding accessories or setting up the home. |
| Borrowed or otherwise available iPhone or iPad | Set up the Home app and add accessories, subject to each accessory’s requirements. | Remove any separate hardware, account, or manufacturer-app requirements for particular accessories. |
Apple’s support guidance is explicit: “You need an iPhone or iPad to add accessories to the Home app. You can’t add accessories with a Mac.” Apple Support: If you can’t add a smart home accessory to the Home app.
What you need to add accessories
For initial setup, use the Home app on an iPhone or iPad. Before buying or attempting to pair a device, check the accessory’s documentation and confirm it supports Apple Home, HomeKit, or Matter. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking Bluetooth on the iPhone or iPad and following the manufacturer’s instructions for any required app, bridge, firmware update, or other hardware. Some accessories have Wi-Fi band requirements, so the exact model’s setup instructions matter.

Matter adds a hub requirement: Apple says Matter accessories need a home hub, such as HomePod or Apple TV 4K. Thread-based Matter accessories additionally need Thread-capable hardware. Apple lists Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, or a compatible third-party Thread border router as examples. See Apple’s iPhone User Guide to setting up accessories for the requirements.
When a Mac is enough
If someone else has already configured the home and added its accessories, a Mac can control those accessories while connected to the same Wi-Fi network. That is local use, not a way to create the home or enroll new devices. Apple’s iCloud User Guide for Home on devices describes Home use on Mac and distinguishes same-network control from remote control, which requires a home hub.

When you need a home hub
A home hub supports remote access when you are away from the home network and can support automations. Apple identifies Apple TV and HomePod as home hub options. This is separate from accessory onboarding: the hub’s role does not let you add accessories without an iPhone or iPad. Apple also says only a home owner can add an Apple TV or HomePod to the Home app to set it up as a hub. Details are in Apple’s home hub setup guidance.

HomePod can control already-configured HomeKit or Matter devices by voice, but Apple’s HomePod guide says accessories are set up in the Home app on iPhone or iPad. Sharing control with other people is also performed from the owner’s iPhone or iPad. See the Apple HomePod User Guide.

Practical choices if you do not own an iPhone or iPad
- Want to add devices or start a home: You will need access to an iPhone or iPad for Home app setup. A Mac, Apple TV, or HomePod does not substitute for this step.
- Want to control an existing home at home: A Mac may be sufficient when it is on the same Wi-Fi network as the configured home.
- Want access while away or automations: The home needs a configured hub, such as Apple TV or HomePod, and the hub must be added to the Home app by the home owner.
- Considering a Matter accessory: Check whether it requires a home hub and, if it uses Thread, whether the available hub or border router supports Thread.
Apple’s documentation does not establish whether “homeOS” may be used for a future or differently scoped product. The setup requirements above apply to Apple Home as described in the cited Apple guides.
