Sometimes, but there is no single answer for every Android “desktop companion app.” Samsung DeX, Google Quick Share, USB file transfer, and Samsung Smart Switch solve different problems. DeX may offer a desktop-like Android experience in certain device and connection combinations; Google’s documented Quick Share computer app is for Windows; and USB transfer or Smart Switch can handle files and backups on a Mac without running Android apps in a Mac window.
Choose the feature first, then verify the exact phone model, Android version, macOS version, and connection method. A phone brand alone does not establish compatibility.

What “Android desktop companion app” can mean
The phrase covers several unrelated functions. A desktop-mode feature can place a phone’s apps and controls into a larger, computer-style interface. A sharing utility can move files between nearby devices. A USB utility can expose the phone’s storage to Finder-like software. A backup program can copy contacts, photos, messages, and other data to a computer or restore it to a new phone.

- USB file transfer: mounts the phone’s storage for copying files; it does not run Android applications on macOS.
- Backup and migration: saves or moves phone data, but may omit protected or app-specific content.
The practical question is therefore not “Does Android work with Mac?” It is “Which Android-to-Mac task are you trying to perform, and is that task documented for your devices?”
Does Samsung DeX work with a Mac?
Samsung describes DeX as a PC-like Android experience. Samsung Developer’s wording is: “Samsung DeX Mode allows your device to cast a PC-like experience to the big screen with the same apps you use on your phone every day.” That describes the general product concept, not a promise that every Galaxy phone can turn any Mac into a DeX host or display.
The Samsung developer material mentions macOS in a general description, but the requirements shown are tied to particular devices and DeX modes. The page should therefore be read as feature guidance rather than a universal, current compatibility matrix. Older requirements can remain visible even after Samsung changes supported models, software, or connection methods.

What to verify before planning around DeX
- Exact Galaxy model: DeX support is device-specific; the presence of Android or a USB-C port is not enough.
- DeX mode: requirements can differ between an external-display setup and a computer-connected setup.
- Phone software: an update can add, remove, or alter supported connection routes.
- Mac version: the macOS release and security permissions can affect whether a companion component installs or connects.
- Connection route: wired USB, wireless display, and a computer client are different paths with different requirements.
Check Samsung’s current support information for the specific phone and Mac combination before buying a monitor, dock, adapter, or cable for DeX. If the support page does not explicitly list that combination, do not assume that a general macOS mention means it will work.

What DeX does not prove
Even when DeX is available, it does not prove that ordinary Android apps can be installed and executed as native Mac applications. DeX presents the phone’s Android environment in a larger interface. Your applications remain on the Android device, and the Mac is part of the display or connection setup rather than an Android runtime.
Does Google Quick Share work on macOS?
Google’s documented Quick Share computer application is for Windows, not macOS. The stated computer requirements are Windows 10 64-bit or later; Windows 11 or later is required for ARM-based PCs. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are also required. Google says Android 6 and later devices include Quick Share.
Because the documented desktop client is a Windows application, you should not assume that it installs or operates on a Mac. Android-to-Mac sharing may still be possible through a different method, but Quick Share’s Windows instructions are not evidence of a supported macOS client.

- If your computer is a Windows 10 or newer 64-bit PC, use the documented Quick Share computer setup and meet its Wi-Fi and Bluetooth requirements.
- If your computer is a Mac, do not plan a workflow around installing the Windows Quick Share application.
- For a Mac, use a documented USB transfer route or a manufacturer backup tool when those meet your goal.
Quick Share’s Android availability and its Windows computer app are separate facts. Having Quick Share on an Android phone does not create a Mac client.

How to transfer Android files to a Mac over USB
USB transfer is the most straightforward Mac route documented in the supplied manufacturer instructions, but it requires the phone to expose its storage correctly. The phone may initially default to charging, and a cable that carries power only will not provide file access.
Requirements
- A USB cable with the correct connector for the Android phone and the available port or adapter on the Mac.
- A cable with data-transfer capability. A charging-only cable cannot carry the files needed for this workflow.
- An unlocked Android phone and the appropriate file-transfer software for the phone’s documented Mac procedure.
Standard wired-transfer procedure
- Connect the phone to the Mac with the data-capable USB cable.
- Unlock the phone. Android commonly keeps USB access restricted while the device is locked.
- Open the USB notification on the phone and change the connection from charging to File transfer or MTP (Media Transfer Protocol).
- If the phone displays an authorization or MTP prompt, allow the connection.
- For Motorola’s documented Mac workflow, install and follow the Android File Transfer instructions, then use that utility to browse and copy the phone’s files.
- Copy files in both directions as needed, then eject or disconnect the phone cleanly before removing the cable.
This process gives the Mac access to files; it does not provide a desktop window for running Android applications.
If the phone only charges
- Try a different cable known to support data. Many bundled or inexpensive cables provide charging but omit data wiring.
- Try another Mac port or a different adapter. A loose connection can deliver power without a stable data link.
- Unlock the phone and reselect File transfer or MTP in the USB notification.
- Accept any on-device permission request.
If none of these changes the connection, the phone, cable, adapter, or Mac software may not support the chosen route. Do not interpret a charging connection as proof that the Mac has recognized the phone for file access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan Samsung Smart Switch be used with a Mac?
Samsung documents Smart Switch for Mac as a backup and migration tool. It can back up data from a phone to a Mac and move or sync data onto a new Galaxy device. This is useful when your objective is preserving or migrating phone content rather than using Android apps on the Mac desktop.

What Smart Switch is for
- Creating a computer backup of supported phone data.
- Moving supported content to a new Galaxy phone.
- Synchronizing or restoring data as part of a device change.
Important transfer limits
Samsung notes that some app data, encrypted content, and digital-rights-managed (DRM-protected) content may not transfer. A successful Smart Switch backup therefore does not guarantee a complete clone of every application, account, protected download, or in-app state. Check the transfer results before erasing the old phone.
Fixing a Samsung phone that Smart Switch or the Mac cannot recognize
Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance focuses on the physical connection, USB mode, and authorization. Work through these checks in order:
- Disconnect the phone and reconnect it with a reliable data cable.
- Try a different USB port on the Mac, avoiding a loose hub or adapter when possible.
- Unlock the phone and allow the MTP connection prompt if it appears.
- Open the Android USB controls and select File transfer, not charging-only mode.
- Restart the phone and Smart Switch, then reconnect.
- If Smart Switch still does not recognize the device, use Smart Switch’s option to reinstall the device driver, where that option is available, and test again.
These steps address recognition for backup or transfer. They do not add DeX support or turn Smart Switch into an Android desktop environment.

Which Mac route should you choose?
| Goal | Mac route documented in the official guidance | What you must check |
|---|---|---|
| Use Android in a desktop-like environment | Samsung DeX is described as a PC-like screen experience, with macOS mentioned generally. | Exact phone or tablet model, DeX mode, current phone software, macOS release, supported connection, and Samsung’s current device-specific guidance. |
| Send files wirelessly nearby | Google’s documented Quick Share computer app is for Windows. | Do not assume the Windows app works on macOS. Select another Mac-compatible transfer method. |
| Copy files over a cable | Motorola documents Android File Transfer on Mac; Samsung documents MTP and file-transfer troubleshooting. | Use a data-capable cable, unlock the phone, authorize MTP, and choose File transfer. |
| Back up or migrate a Galaxy phone | Samsung documents Smart Switch for Mac backup and migration. | Confirm current system compatibility and expect some app, encrypted, or DRM-protected data not to transfer. |
Common assumptions that cause problems
“The phone is Android, so any Android computer app should work.”
Android is the phone platform, not a guarantee that a companion program exists for every desktop operating system. Each vendor chooses which features receive Windows or macOS software.

“A Mac is mentioned on a DeX page, so my Galaxy is supported.”
Samsung’s DeX wording is broad, while the listed requirements are associated with specific devices and modes. Verify the model and connection instead of relying on the general description.
“Quick Share is on my phone, so it must work with macOS.”
Quick Share on Android and the Quick Share computer application are separate components. Google’s documented computer application targets Windows.
“Smart Switch copied my phone, so every app and download is safe.”
Transfer exclusions can include app data, encrypted material, and DRM-protected content. Confirm what moved before wiping the source phone.
“The cable charges, so it is suitable for file transfer.”
Power and data are separate cable capabilities. Use a USB-C data-transfer cable, matching both ends to the phone and Mac, when the reader needs a wired connection.
A practical decision path
- Define the outcome. Decide whether you need a larger Android workspace, nearby sharing, ordinary file copying, or a backup and migration.
- Match the feature. Consider DeX for a desktop-like Android interface, Quick Share for supported Windows sharing, Android File Transfer for documented USB copying, and Smart Switch for Galaxy backup or migration.
- Check the exact combination. Confirm the phone model, Android software, macOS release, mode, cable, and adapter rather than relying on the manufacturer name.
- Test before committing. Transfer a small, noncritical file or create a test backup before moving a large library or erasing a phone.
- Keep a fallback. If wireless sharing or desktop mode is not documented for macOS, retain the USB transfer path for files and Smart Switch for supported Galaxy data migration.
The reliable conclusion is task-specific: a Mac can work with Android phones for wired file transfer and, for Galaxy devices, documented Smart Switch backups and migrations. DeX requires model- and mode-level verification, while Google’s documented Quick Share desktop app is Windows-only. None of these routes should be assumed to run Android applications natively as Mac software.
