Can You Use an Xbox Controller for Microsoft Flight Simulator Multiplayer and VR?

Yes. Microsoft Flight Simulator officially supports Xbox controllers on both PC and Xbox consoles, and you can use the same gamepad while flying online with other pilots. On PC, an Xbox controller is also the dependable aircraft input for VR: the headset supplies the view, while the gamepad flies the aircraft.

VR support is a separate question from controller support. Microsoft documents PC VR through Windows Mixed Reality, Oculus/Meta PC, and SteamVR. Its VR FAQ says motion controllers are not supported in the documented configuration, so do not assume that hand controllers can replace the Xbox gamepad. Native VR on Xbox consoles is not established by the cited Xbox documentation.

What Xbox-controller support actually covers

Microsoft’s accessibility documentation describes an Xbox Controller as one of the devices that can be combined with a flight stick, HOTAS, mouse, or keyboard to manage a cockpit. The 2024 accessibility documentation likewise says the simulator supports a variety of input devices on PC and console. In practical terms, the controller can handle aircraft control, camera movement, menus, and cockpit interaction without requiring a separate yoke or joystick.

  • Aircraft control: The two analog sticks, triggers, bumpers, buttons, and D-pad can be assigned through the simulator’s control profiles.
  • Custom bindings: Microsoft says controls are fully customizable, so you can change assignments rather than being locked to the default preset.
  • Online flying: The controller works in Free Flight multiplayer, not only in offline or training activities.
  • VR: On a supported PC VR setup, the controller remains the physical flight input while the headset provides stereoscopic views.

Compatibility does not mean that a gamepad feels identical to a yoke and pedals. An Xbox controller gives you compact, spring-centered analog controls; dedicated flight hardware supplies more physical travel and separate controls. Microsoft’s cited material confirms device compatibility but does not publish a controlled precision, comfort, or performance ranking.

Platform and headset requirements

Use this matrix to separate the parts of the setup that are often confused:

Capability PC Xbox console
Xbox controller for aircraft input Supported Supported
Free Flight multiplayer Supported when online services are available Supported when online services are available
PC VR runtime Windows Mixed Reality, Oculus/Meta PC, or SteamVR are the documented ecosystems Not established by the cited Xbox documentation
Motion-controller flight input The VR FAQ states that motion controllers are not supported in its documented configuration Not established

A Quest headset, for example, must be connected to the PC through a supported Oculus/Meta PC or SteamVR path. The headset brand alone does not guarantee compatibility; the simulator must be running through one of the documented PC VR ecosystems.

Connect and configure the Xbox controller

Set up the controller before launching the simulator so that the correct profile is detected during startup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the gamepad. Pair your Xbox Wireless Controller over the supported wireless connection or plug it in by USB. Confirm that the operating system recognizes it.
  2. Launch Microsoft Flight Simulator. Starting the simulator after the controller is connected makes detection and preset selection more predictable.
  3. Open Control Options. Select the detected Xbox controller profile. If more than one device is connected, choose the gamepad rather than a keyboard, mouse, or flight-stick profile.
  4. Check the primary axes. Move the left and right sticks and press the triggers to verify that the corresponding indicators respond. If an axis is reversed or assigned to an unwanted function, edit that binding in Control Options.
  5. Save a personal profile. Keep the default profile intact and save your changes as a custom profile if the simulator offers that choice. This makes it easier to return to a known working layout.
  6. Test on the ground. Before joining a group, load a simple flight, move the controls gradually, and confirm that pitch, roll, yaw, throttle, brakes, camera, and menu commands behave as expected.

Microsoft’s documentation does not require a special controller driver inside the simulator. The important checks are that the gamepad is visible to the platform, appears in Control Options, and has usable bindings.

Flying and interacting with the cockpit

A controller can do more than steer the aircraft. The 2020 accessibility guide describes a toolbar shortcut using a click of the Xbox controller’s left stick and a cockpit interaction mode designed for players who do not want to rely on a mouse. Those labels and shortcuts can change between simulator versions, so treat the 2020 instructions as version-specific guidance and verify the current in-game mapping.

Managing instruments

Use the controller’s assigned cursor or interaction mode to reach switches, knobs, and buttons, then use the confirm and adjustment commands shown by the current profile. This is slower than reaching for a physical mouse in some complex panels, but it keeps the session on the gamepad. If a control is difficult to operate, open Control Options and assign a more convenient button or stick direction.

Switching between flight and menus

Keep one button available for the simulator’s menu or toolbar command. A dedicated shortcut prevents you from having to move your hands to a keyboard during a flight. Because all controls are customizable, record the final layout or save it as a named profile before changing other devices.

Join multiplayer with the controller

Multiplayer is an online mode, so controller compatibility and network availability are separate checks. In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Free Flight lets you fly with Xbox friends or with other pilots in the same location on the same server. Microsoft documents groups of up to five other users, meaning a group can contain you plus as many as five additional pilots.

  1. Open Free Flight. Select the Free Flight activity rather than a solo-only activity.
  2. Open the Social panel. Use the simulator’s current Social panel command to view friends and available invitations.
  3. Invite or join. Send an invitation to Xbox friends, accept an invitation, or join pilots listed for the same location and server.
  4. Choose the flight and departure. Confirm the aircraft, airport, weather, and other session settings before launching. Every participant should use a compatible simulator version and be signed in to the required online service.
  5. Verify your controls after loading. A profile can change when another device is connected. Move the sticks and check throttle and rudder response before taking off with the group.

The cited documentation gives the “up to five other users” capacity for MSFS 2024 groups. It does not provide a universal player limit for every multiplayer activity, simulator edition, or server condition, so do not apply that number to modes that are not identified as 2024 Free Flight groups.

Use an Xbox controller in PC VR

VR requires three separate pieces: the simulator running on a capable PC, a headset using a supported runtime, and an input device. Microsoft’s VR FAQ lists Windows Mixed Reality, Oculus/Meta PC, and SteamVR as supported PC VR ecosystems. The headset handles the view and head tracking; the Xbox controller handles aircraft commands.

  1. Start the headset runtime. Open the Windows Mixed Reality, Oculus/Meta PC, or SteamVR environment that your headset requires.
  2. Connect the Xbox controller. Pair it before starting the simulator, then verify it in Control Options.
  3. Launch the simulator through the PC VR path. Use the headset’s normal PC connection and runtime rather than treating the headset as an Xbox-console accessory.
  4. Load a flight in the normal interface. Check that the gamepad profile is active and that the aircraft responds before entering VR.
  5. Toggle VR. The VR FAQ lists Ctrl+Tab as the default keyboard binding for the VR command. If you customized keyboard mappings, use the binding shown in your current settings.
  6. Keep the controller accessible. Once the headset is on, use the gamepad for flight, camera, and other assigned commands. Do not expect the headset’s motion controllers to provide documented flight input.

For a Quest headset, the relevant question is which PC runtime is carrying the session. A Quest connected through Oculus/Meta PC or SteamVR fits the documented PC categories; a headset that is not running through a supported PC runtime is not covered by those statements.

What “motion controllers are not supported” means

Microsoft’s VR FAQ explicitly says, “Motion controllers are not supported.” That statement is important because VR menus can make it appear that hand controllers should replace a gamepad. The documented configuration instead uses the headset for viewing and an Xbox controller, keyboard, mouse, or other supported physical device for simulator input.

Do not promise a hand-tracking or motion-controller flight experience based on the presence of VR menus. Support can change with a simulator update, headset runtime, or new release notes, but the cited FAQ is the baseline for the configuration described here. If motion-controller support is a deciding factor, check the FAQ and release notes for the exact simulator version you intend to play.

Can you fly comfortably without a HOTAS?

Yes, but the best choice depends on the kind of flying and interaction you prefer. The following comparison stays within what the official material establishes; it does not assign a performance score.

Input option Platform compatibility Axes and throttle/rudder control Cockpit interaction VR and multiplayer considerations Setup and price information
Xbox controller PC and Xbox Analog sticks and triggers; assignments are customizable, but there is no separate physical throttle quadrant or pedal set Compact controls and controller-oriented interaction mode; mouse may still be useful for detailed panels Documented physical input for PC VR; works in Free Flight multiplayer Connect, select the profile, and bind controls; official sources do not state a price
HOTAS Varies by model; Microsoft lists Xbox-compatible examples such as Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas One and HORI HOTAS Flight Stick Separate stick and throttle provide more dedicated controls; rudder arrangement depends on the model More switches can reduce menu travel, although the cockpit still uses simulator bindings Can be used in multiplayer when the model is supported; VR comfort depends on placement and personal preference Requires device-specific setup; official sources do not provide a quantitative performance ranking or price
Yoke plus pedals Compatibility varies by device and platform Separate pitch/roll yoke and rudder pedals give dedicated controls; exact axes depend on hardware Natural for general-aviation procedures, with more equipment to position Usable for supported sessions, but the cited VR FAQ still does not document motion-controller input More hardware and calibration steps; price not stated in the cited material

Choose the Xbox controller when you want one inexpensive, portable input device, play on both PC and Xbox, or switch between a monitor and PC VR. Consider a HOTAS, yoke, or pedals when separate physical controls matter more than portability. None of the cited sources establishes that one option is objectively more precise or reliable.

Troubleshoot a controller that is not responding

The simulator does not show the gamepad

  • Close the simulator, connect or pair the controller, and launch again.
  • Open Control Options and select the detected Xbox profile instead of assuming the default device is active.
  • Disconnect other gamepads or flight devices temporarily to identify a profile conflict.
  • Test the controller in a simple flight and inspect each axis before changing advanced bindings.

An axis or button does the wrong thing

  • Return to Control Options and inspect the assignment for that axis or button.
  • Remove duplicate bindings that cause two functions to trigger together.
  • Save a custom profile after corrections so a future device change does not erase your layout.

The controller works offline but not in a group

  • Confirm that you entered Free Flight and opened the Social panel.
  • Check that you are signed in to the required Xbox or platform account and that online services are available.
  • Have the host verify the group invitation and session settings, then rejoin and test the controls after loading.

Troubleshoot PC VR with an Xbox controller

The headset displays a desktop but the simulator remains flat

Start the headset’s supported runtime first, then launch the simulator through that PC VR environment. In the simulator, use the current VR command; Ctrl+Tab is the default documented keyboard binding unless you changed it.

The view works but the aircraft does not respond

VR display support does not automatically select the gamepad profile. Exit or pause the VR view, open Control Options, confirm the Xbox controller is selected, and test the axes. Re-enter VR only after the aircraft responds in the normal interface.

You expected hand-controller flight

The VR FAQ states that motion controllers are not supported. Keep the Xbox controller available and use it for aircraft input rather than diagnosing the absence of hand-controller commands as a gamepad fault.

Version and platform boundaries to remember

Some instructions are edition-specific. The left-stick toolbar and cockpit interaction guidance comes from the 2020 accessibility material, while the Free Flight group description and PC-and-console input statement come from Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 documentation. Menu names, default bindings, and available peripherals can change with updates, so verify the labels shown by your installed edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft also published historical release notes describing improvements to online multiplayer and PC VR-controller support in Sim Update VII. Those notes document changes at that point in the simulator’s history; they are not a guarantee that every later edition exposes identical behavior. For a current session, the installed version’s Control Options, Social panel, and VR settings are the final authority.

Practical recommendation

For most players, an Xbox controller is the simplest supported way to fly Microsoft Flight Simulator in multiplayer and PC VR. Connect it before launch, confirm its profile in Control Options, join friends through Free Flight’s Social panel, and enter VR through a supported PC runtime. Move to a HOTAS, yoke, or pedals only when you specifically want separate physical controls; the official documentation does not show that those devices are required for multiplayer or VR.
