That limit is only the first check. The complete phone-and-case setup should stay within Insta360’s recommended 6.9–10 mm thickness, 64–84 mm width and 130–300 g weight range, and the magnetic clamp must hold the centered phone securely. A case that passes the thickness test can still be unsuitable if it makes the phone too wide, heavy or loose.
What Insta360’s 1.5 mm case limit means
Insta360’s Flow and Flow Pro FAQ answers the question directly: “Yes, but please make sure the phone case is no thicker than 1.5mm.” This is the manufacturer’s stated guidance for those two gimbals. It is not an independently verified guarantee that every 1.5 mm case, phone shape or camera bump will fit safely.

Measure the phone with the case installed, not the empty case by itself. The clamp grips the outside of the assembled phone, so the case’s edges, raised corners, camera protection and any attached accessories all affect the result. A thin case can still prevent a firm grip if it has unusually raised sides or a shape that does not sit flat in the clamp.

Insta360’s Flow-series compatibility guidance recommends these measurements for the phone being mounted:

These figures are recommended fit specifications, not a promise that a phone at every boundary will balance identically. Insta360 warns that a phone larger or heavier than the listed limits may not clamp securely and could fall. Staying inside the ranges still requires a physical check: the phone should be centered, the clamp should be fully engaged and the assembly should not slide when the gimbal is moved gently.
Why thickness alone is not enough
A 1.5 mm case specification normally describes the case wall, but the part that meets the clamp may be thicker because of a lip around the screen, reinforced corners or a built-in magnet. The useful measurement is the outside thickness of the mounted setup where the clamp actually contacts it.
Width matters because a rugged case can extend beyond the phone’s body even when its back is thin. Weight matters because a case, metal camera protector or card holder changes the load that the gimbal motors must balance. Those additions can also move the phone’s center of gravity away from the clamp.

How to measure your setup before mounting
- Put on the exact case you intend to use. Remove temporary packaging, but leave on any permanent camera protector, MagSafe-style ring or grip that will remain during filming.
- Measure thickness at the clamp area. Use a caliper if available. Measure across the phone and case, rather than adding the advertised phone thickness to the advertised case thickness; rounded edges and camera bumps can make the combined result different.
- Measure the widest point. Check the case’s side rails and corners. Compare the result with the 64–84 mm recommendation.
- Weigh the assembled phone. A small digital kitchen or luggage scale is sufficient for a practical check. Include anything attached while recording.
- Inspect the contact surfaces. Look for a flat, solid area where the clamp can grip. Soft silicone, a loose wallet flap or a sliding outer shell can allow movement even when the nominal dimensions are acceptable.
- Test the clamp without powering the gimbal. Center the phone, close the clamp and gently tilt the assembly by hand. If the phone shifts, drops out or requires an awkward off-center position, remove the case or use a different case before turning on the motors.
Mounting a cased phone on Flow or Flow Pro
The objective is a centered phone with the clamp’s magnetic connection fully aligned. The Flow Pro manual instructs users to stretch the clamp around the middle of the phone and align the clamp’s magnetic notch with the raised bump on the gimbal.
- Open the magnetic phone clamp and make sure its contact faces are clean and free of grit.
- Place the clamp around the middle of the cased phone. Avoid clamping over a loose wallet section, a side button or a pronounced corner guard.
- Center the phone left to right. The camera module may make one end heavier, but do not deliberately leave the phone hanging far to one side to clear the case.
- Align the magnetic notch and raised bump. Bring the clamp straight to the gimbal rather than sliding it into place at an angle.
- Check the connection before starting the motors. The clamp should sit flush, with no visible gap caused by the case or an accessory.
- Power on and watch for movement. If the phone slowly rotates, sags or causes the motors to strain, power off and correct the fit instead of continuing to record.
Keep the phone’s controls accessible. A case lip that presses a volume or power button can interrupt filming, while a cover over the charging port can make it impossible to connect a cable during a long shoot.
When you should remove the case
Remove the case before filming if any of these conditions applies:

- The combined setup exceeds 10 mm in thickness, 84 mm in width or 300 g in weight.
- The case is nominally thin but has a loose outer shell, folding section, wallet flap or raised attachment that the clamp cannot hold flat.
- The clamp cannot sit around the phone’s middle or the phone must be mounted visibly off-center.
- You can move the phone with light hand pressure after the clamp is closed.
- The gimbal produces repeated motor warnings, unusual vibration or a sagging arm after balancing.
- A camera bump, screen lip or protective cover keeps the magnetic faces from making full contact.
Removing the case is cautious operating advice based on Insta360’s warning about insecure clamping; it is not a separately published requirement that every user must follow. If the bare phone fits securely and the cased phone does not, use the bare phone for that session or choose a slimmer, more rigid case.

Flow and Flow Pro versus Flow 2 and Flow 2 Pro
Product generation matters most when you are replacing the magnetic clamp. Insta360’s accessory compatibility table distinguishes the original Flow/Flow Pro clamp from the Flow 2/Flow 2 Pro clamp:

Do not identify a replacement only by appearance or by the word “Flow” in a listing. Confirm the exact gimbal generation printed on the device, packaging or original documentation, then select the clamp family listed for that generation. A clamp that attaches physically but is not supported can create an unreliable magnetic connection or an incorrect fit.
The 1.5 mm case statement is explicitly given in the Flow and Flow Pro FAQ. Flow 2’s compatibility page repeats the recommended 6.9–10 mm thickness, 64–84 mm width and 130–300 g weight ranges, but those physical dimensions should not be treated as a new universal case-thickness guarantee. For any model, use the assembled dimensions and the secure-clamp test.
Physical mounting and app compatibility are separate checks
A phone can fit the clamp and still lack support for every gimbal feature in the companion app. Insta360’s compatibility information separates physical dimensions from operating-system and app requirements. Check the current app and operating-system requirements for your phone before a shoot, especially if you need subject tracking, gesture control or other app-dependent functions.

Native camera recording may continue to work when an app feature is unavailable, but the controls and automation can differ. Test the exact phone, operating-system version and app version together before an important event. A successful magnetic connection proves only that the hardware can hold the phone; it does not confirm software compatibility.

The phone slides inside the clamp
Power off the gimbal, remove the phone and inspect the case. A polished or flexible case can reduce friction, while a wallet cover can fold under the clamp. Re-seat the clamp around the phone’s middle, remove detachable accessories and repeat the hand-tilt test. If movement remains, use the bare phone or a thinner, rigid case.
The clamp will not sit flush
Check for a camera-bump protector, raised screen lip or a magnetic ring positioned where the clamp needs to contact the phone. Clean the clamp faces and verify that the case is not warped. Do not force the clamp shut; incomplete contact is a reason to change the setup.

The phone is secure but the gimbal sags or vibrates
Recheck total weight and thickness, including every attachment. A phone near or beyond the recommended limit can overload the motors, and an off-center camera module can increase the imbalance. Recenter the phone, remove accessories and restart the balance test. Persistent strain means the setup is unsuitable even if the clamp itself feels tight.

The phone fits, but an app feature does not work
Treat this as a software-compatibility issue rather than a case issue. Verify the phone model, operating system and app requirements separately. The case does not change whether the app supports a device, although it can block buttons, ports or cameras needed during operation.
A replacement clamp does not connect correctly
Stop using it and confirm the generation. Flow/Flow Pro and Flow 2/Flow 2 Pro clamps are not interchangeable according to Insta360’s accessory table. Obtain the clamp designated for the exact gimbal family rather than relying on a similar-looking part.
Practical examples
A slim case on a mid-size phone
If the assembled phone measures 8.5 mm thick, 76 mm wide and 205 g, it falls within the stated physical ranges. Center it in the clamp and verify that the magnetic notch and raised bump align. The figures indicate a reasonable starting point, not an automatic guarantee; the hand-tilt test still decides whether the fit is secure.

Suppose the case wall is advertised as 1.5 mm, but a raised camera protector makes the mounted phone 11 mm thick. The combined setup is outside the recommended 6.9–10 mm thickness range. Remove the protector or case, or use a slimmer alternative; the case’s advertised wall thickness does not override the assembled measurement.
A phone with a wallet attachment
A detachable wallet can add both width and weight and may create a flexible layer under the clamp. Remove it before mounting. If the phone only fits when the wallet is folded behind it, that folded section can still prevent even pressure and should not be left in the clamp.
Pre-shoot checklist
- Confirm the gimbal model: Flow, Flow Pro, Flow 2 or Flow 2 Pro.
- For Flow or Flow Pro, verify that the case itself is no thicker than 1.5 mm.
- Measure the complete mounted setup against 6.9–10 mm thickness, 64–84 mm width and 130–300 g weight.
- Remove wallets, grips, loose shells and unnecessary camera or card attachments.
- Center the phone and align the magnetic notch with the gimbal’s raised bump.
- Perform a gentle hand-tilt test before powering on.
- Run the app and operating-system compatibility check separately from the physical fit check.
- For a replacement clamp, match the accessory to the exact gimbal generation.
Bottom line for each Insta360 Flow generation
For Flow and Flow Pro, a phone case is acceptable when it is no thicker than 1.5 mm and the complete phone-and-case assembly remains within the recommended physical limits. Flow 2 and Flow 2 Pro use the same published phone dimension and weight recommendations, but clamp accessories are generation-specific. In every case, a firm, centered magnetic hold is more important than the case’s advertised thickness alone.
