Usually, yes for a normal tap—but the wording matters. At an MBTA Charlie reader, Apple Wallet is used as a debit or credit card for pay-as-you-go travel; the MBTA’s current instructions do not establish that an MBTA CharlieCard itself can be provisioned as a transit card in Apple Wallet. Once an eligible payment card is set up in Express Mode, the tap normally does not need an internet connection.
If the iPhone battery is exhausted, an Express card may still work through Apple’s Power Reserve. The MBTA and Apple state that this can provide up to five hours of access in supported circumstances, but it is a maximum and not a guarantee for every phone and card. A manually powered-off iPhone cannot use that fallback.

What “Apple Wallet CharlieCard” means at an MBTA reader
The MBTA’s Apple Wallet guidance describes adding a debit or credit card to Apple Wallet and using it for pay-as-you-go fares at Charlie readers. It does not describe importing a standard MBTA CharlieCard, with its stored value or pass, into Apple Wallet. That distinction affects how you should think about both offline use and a dead battery.
In practical terms, you are tapping a payment card token in Apple Wallet. You are not necessarily carrying the balance or pass from a separate physical CharlieCard onto the iPhone. The MBTA’s physical-card service, MyCharlie, describes reusable CharlieCards loaded with money or passes and obtained through fare vending machines, retailers, and municipal locations: https://mycharlie.mbta.com/.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Does an Apple Wallet tap need an internet connection?
Not normally at the moment of an Express tap. Apple and the MBTA describe Express Mode as allowing a compatible card to communicate with the contactless reader without waking or unlocking iOS, opening Wallet, or authenticating with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. That behavior supports the practical conclusion that the tap is handled locally by the phone and reader rather than waiting for the phone to fetch a network response.
This is a practical inference from the documented Express-card design, not a blanket MBTA promise that every fare transaction will succeed during every communications outage. Internet access may still matter when you first add a card, change the selected card, reload or manage an account, or try to view current account information. Complete those tasks before leaving for the station.
What “offline” covers
- At the gate or validator: a previously provisioned Express card can normally be presented without cellular data or Wi-Fi.
- During setup or changes: adding a card, changing Wallet settings, or managing fare information may require connectivity and a working phone.
- For transaction certainty: an outage affecting a reader, back-end fare system, or card authorization path can still produce a failure. Express Mode is not an outage guarantee.
Set up Apple Wallet and Express Mode before travel
The MBTA’s setup flow uses a debit or credit card and designates it for Express use. Do this while the iPhone is charged and connected, rather than at the reader.

- Open the iPhone’s Settings app and go to the Wallet and Apple Pay area.
- Add an eligible debit or credit card to Apple Wallet, completing the issuer’s verification if requested.
- Open the Express Transit or Express Mode setting and select the card you want to use for Charlie readers. Apple’s terminology can vary by iOS version and card type; choose the card shown as available for Express use.
- Confirm that the selected card is the one you intend to use. A card being visible in Wallet is not the same as being selected for Express Mode.
- Test the arrangement at a reader when possible, before relying on it for a trip.

- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
How to tap with a charged iPhone
With Express Mode enabled, hold the top of the iPhone near the Charlie reader’s contactless area. You do not need to unlock the phone, open Wallet, or authenticate first. Keep the phone steady until the reader indicates that the fare was accepted.
If Express Mode is not enabled or the card is not eligible, the reader may require normal Apple Pay authentication. That is a different experience from the hands-free Express flow and can be impractical if the screen, passcode, or network-dependent setup is unavailable.
Can you tap with a dead or nearly dead iPhone?
Sometimes, through Power Reserve. Supported iPhones retain a small amount of energy for Express Card transactions after iOS stops running because the phone needs charging. Apple calls this Power Reserve; the MBTA and Apple state that Express access may remain available for up to five hours.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Conditions that must be true
- The payment card must be compatible with Express Mode and already designated as the Express card.
- The phone must enter its charging-needed reserve state rather than being deliberately shut down.
- You must tap within whatever reserve time remains. “Up to five hours” is a maximum, not a promised duration for every iPhone, battery condition, or card.
When the battery is depleted, look for the iPhone’s indication that Express Cards remain available, then try the tap at the reader. Repeatedly checking the phone can consume reserve power, so avoid waking it unnecessarily while you are relying on the remaining energy.

Do not manually power off the phone
Power Reserve is not available after a standard user-initiated shutdown. Apple states, “If you turn off your iPhone, this feature isn’t available.” Its Platform Security guide likewise says, “This feature isn’t available when a standard user-initiated shutdown is performed.” A phone that has been intentionally powered off therefore cannot perform the reserve Express transaction.
Apple’s technical description of the feature is in https://help.apple.com/pdf/security/en_US/apple-platform-security-guide.pdf. The MBTA’s fare guidance also explains the Power Reserve scenario on its Apple Pay page.
Apple Wallet payment card versus a physical CharlieCard
| Question | Apple Wallet at a Charlie reader | Physical CharlieCard |
|---|---|---|
| What you tap | A debit or credit card token selected for Apple Wallet Express Mode. | A separate reusable MBTA CharlieCard. |
| Where value or passes live | The MBTA Apple Wallet instructions describe pay-as-you-go payment; they do not say that a physical CharlieCard balance or pass is transferred into Wallet. | The card can be loaded with money or passes, as described by MyCharlie. |
| Device dependency | Requires a correctly provisioned card, a compatible iPhone, and sufficient normal or reserve battery. | Does not depend on iPhone power, cellular service, or Wi-Fi. |
| Reader procedure | With Express Mode, hold the top of the iPhone near the reader without unlocking or opening Wallet. | Present the card to the reader. |
| Best preparation | Set up and select the Express card before travel. | Obtain and load the card before travel. |
What still will not work without a working, connected phone
Offline tapping should not be confused with offline account management. You may be unable to complete tasks such as these until the phone is charged and connectivity is restored:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Adding a new debit or credit card to Apple Wallet.
- Changing which card is assigned to Express Mode.
- Reloading a fare account or checking current account information.
- Resolving an issuer verification request or other setup prompt.
Those limitations are why the safest preparation is to configure the card, confirm Express Mode, and charge the phone before heading to the station. If the trip is important and your iPhone battery is unreliable, carry a separate physical CharlieCard as an independent fare medium.

Troubleshooting common failure cases
The reader does nothing
Check that the top of the iPhone, not the middle or bottom, is close to the contactless area. Hold it still for the reader response. If the phone is charged, wake it and verify that the intended card is selected for Express Mode.
Wallet asks for Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode
That usually means the card is not being used through Express Mode, or the card is not eligible for it. Complete setup while online, select the card in the Express Transit or Express Mode setting, and try again.
The battery icon shows the phone needs charging
Look for the indication that Express Cards are still available and try the tap promptly. Reserve operation is conditional and time-limited; connect a charger as soon as possible. Do not turn the iPhone off manually if you still need the reserve tap.
Recommended Free Tools
The phone was intentionally shut down
Power Reserve cannot operate after a standard user-initiated shutdown. Use a physical CharlieCard or another accepted fare method instead, then recharge and reconfigure the iPhone before the next trip.

The tap fails during an apparent internet outage
An ordinary Express tap does not normally require the phone to obtain a network response, but the MBTA does not promise success for every system or communications outage. Try the reader again as directed by station staff and use a separate fare medium if the system continues to reject the transaction.
Which option should you rely on?
Use Apple Wallet when you want the convenience of tapping a payment card from the iPhone and you can set up Express Mode in advance. It is reasonable to travel without cellular data for the tap itself, provided the card is already provisioned and selected.
Keep a physical CharlieCard available when your phone may be switched off, when its battery is unreliable, or when you need the independent stored-value or pass model described by MyCharlie. The physical card is not a backup copy of the Wallet card; it is a separate fare medium with its own value and setup.
