Can You Use an Animated GIF as Your Windows 11 Profile Picture?

No. Microsoft does not support animated GIFs as Microsoft account profile photos, and Windows 11’s local account-picture instructions do not promise GIF animation. You can use a still frame from a GIF as your picture, but it will not animate on the sign-in screen, Start menu, or other account surfaces.

Choose the right picture setting

Windows 11 has two relevant picture types. A local Windows account picture is managed in Settings on that PC. A Microsoft account photo is managed through the account or organization profile and can appear in apps and devices associated with that account. Neither documented route supports an animated GIF profile photo.

Picture type Where to change it What to expect
Local Windows account picture Windows Settings Changes the picture for that Windows account on the PC. Windows documents choosing a picture or taking one with the camera, but does not specify GIF handling or promise animation.
Personal Microsoft account photo Your info tab on the Microsoft account dashboard May appear in apps and devices that use the Microsoft account. Animated GIFs are unsupported.
Work or school account photo An Office app: File > Account > Change photo Opens the organization profile page. An administrator may restrict photo changes, and animated GIFs are unsupported.

For Microsoft account photos, see Microsoft’s account-picture guidance. For the local Windows picture steps, see Microsoft’s Windows account-picture instructions.

Change a local Windows 11 account picture

  1. Open Settings > Accounts > Your info.
  2. Under Adjust your photo, select Choose a file > Browse files to select an existing image, or choose Open camera to take a new photo.
  3. Select the picture you want to use and follow the on-screen prompts.

Windows remembers the last three pictures used, so you can select one again from the Your info page. Microsoft’s instructions describe changing an account picture; they do not list accepted extensions or say that an animated GIF will remain animated.

Change a Microsoft account photo

Personal account

Open the Your info tab on the Microsoft account dashboard, then add or change the photo there. Microsoft says the photo may appear in apps and devices that use the account. An update can take up to 24 hours to appear everywhere; this is Microsoft’s timing estimate, not a guarantee that every service updates at the same time.

Work or school account

In an Office app, go to File > Account > Change photo to open the organization profile page. If you cannot edit the photo, your administrator may have disabled personal-detail changes. Even when editing is available, Microsoft does not support animated GIFs as profile photos.

Use a still frame from the GIF instead

If you want the GIF’s artwork as your avatar, export or capture one frame and save it as a static image, then use that image through the relevant account-picture route above. This preserves the chosen frame, not the animation. Microsoft says most static image files can be used for Microsoft account photos, while animated GIFs and HEIC are not supported. For a portrait or landscape image that should appear in full, Microsoft recommends adding borders so the image is square.

Why an uploaded GIF will not animate

Microsoft Support explicitly lists animated GIFs as unsupported for Microsoft account pictures. The supported alternative is a static image; uploading a GIF is not a way to enable animation. The local Windows account instructions likewise describe selecting a picture or taking a photo, without documenting animated GIF support. Treat any still appearance as a static picture rather than evidence that the animation is supported.
