Can You Use an Android Game Controller as a Mouse in Every App?

No—not in every app. Android can pair a Bluetooth or wired game controller and let you remap its buttons or sticks, but those settings do not turn a normal gamepad into a system-wide mouse. A cursor appears only when the controller itself (or its companion software) provides an Android mouse mode, and the app must accept the pointer events that mode sends.

If you need dependable pointer control, Android’s documented general solution is a Bluetooth or USB mouse. A controller with a dedicated mouse mode can be useful in selected apps, but it is a model-specific feature rather than an Android-wide switch.

What Android’s controller settings actually do

Android Help describes two basic controller tasks: connecting a gamepad over a compatible cable or Bluetooth, and changing what its buttons or joysticks do. Those controls are useful when a game has an unusual layout or when you need to swap actions, but they still produce game-controller input. Remapping “A” to another button or changing a stick assignment does not create a visible pointer.

This distinction matters because a controller can be fully paired and work perfectly in a game while never acting like a mouse anywhere else. Pairing confirms that Android can read the device’s controller signals; it does not confirm that the device can generate pointer movement, clicks, or touch-style gestures.

Capability What it provides What it does not establish
Bluetooth or wired controller connection Android receives gamepad input from the paired device. A cursor, mouse buttons, or pointer events.
Button or joystick reassignment Different controller controls can trigger the available controller actions. Conversion of a stick into a universal mouse pointer.
Controller-specific Android mouse mode The hardware may send cursor movement and a click command according to its manual. Compatibility with every Android app or every touchscreen gesture.
Bluetooth or USB mouse A documented pointer-input method for Android. Use of the game controller itself as the pointing device.

Why a gamepad is not automatically a mouse

Android treats controller input and pointer input as separate capabilities. The Android 15 Compatibility Definition discusses fake-touch pointer devices separately from the HID button mappings used by game controllers. In that specification, “Fake touch interface provides a user input system that approximates a subset of touchscreen capabilities.” The wording is important: fake touch is an emulation of selected touch actions, not a promise that every touchscreen operation can be reproduced.

A conventional gamepad reports controls such as axes, buttons, and a directional pad. A mouse reports pointer movement and mouse-button events. Android’s standard controller settings can interpret the first category, but they do not generally synthesize the second. A cursor therefore depends on an additional capability implemented by the controller, its firmware, or software supplied by the manufacturer.

Even when pointer events exist, they are not guaranteed to perform every action that a touch screen supports. Android’s compatibility definition identifies pointer tap, double-tap, drag, and fling among the fake-touch interactions. It does not establish that one pointer can reproduce all multi-touch combinations, pressure-sensitive behavior, edge gestures, or app-specific touch handling.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Why the same controller can work in one app and fail in another

Apps decide how to consume non-touch input. Android Developers explains that some unhandled gamepad events may be re-emitted as keyboard events for compatibility, but recommends implementing direct support for non-touch input instead of relying on automatic compatibility. That creates several legitimate outcomes:

What the app supports Likely result
Direct gamepad support Buttons and sticks perform the actions the app has assigned to a controller.
Pointer support A controller’s dedicated mouse mode may move a cursor and activate controls.
Keyboard fallback only Some controller actions may be interpreted as key events, with behavior depending on the app.
Touch-only interaction The controller may pair successfully yet produce no usable action in the app.

This is why “it works in one Android app” is not evidence that it should work everywhere. A game may listen directly for gamepad axes, while a productivity app may ignore those events. Another app may accept a pointer but reject a particular click or drag sequence. Device manufacturers, Android versions, screen sizes, and app form factors can also affect the result.

Some controllers include their own Android mouse mode

At least one controller manual hosted by Ingram Micro documents an Android mouse operation mode. In that implementation, the user switches the controller into a special mode, moves the joystick while holding a confirmation control to move the mouse, and uses a controller key to confirm a selection. This is evidence of a hardware-specific feature, not a behavior supplied by Android for ordinary gamepads.

The same manual says that some games require gamepad support to be enabled and describes a special mode for certain older MediaTek phones. The excerpt does not clearly identify a current model or establish present-day compatibility across apps, so treat its procedure as an example of how a manufacturer may implement mouse mode rather than as a universal recipe.

How to use a controller’s mouse mode

  1. Read the controller’s manual. Look specifically for “Android mouse,” “cursor,” “pointer,” or a named mode switch. A normal Bluetooth pairing instruction is not enough.
  2. Pair the controller with Android. Use the connection method supported by the device, either compatible USB or Bluetooth.
  3. Switch to the documented mouse mode. Follow the exact button combination or mode key in the manual. Do not assume the same shortcut works on another controller.
  4. Move and click as the manual describes. Some designs require a stick to be moved while a confirmation control is held; another key may perform the click.
  5. Open the target app and test its controls. Check a simple tap, a double-tap if needed, a drag, and scrolling. The app must respond to the pointer events the controller sends.
  6. Return to gamepad mode for games that require it. The manual’s game-compatibility note shows that mouse mode and gamepad mode can be separate operating states.

A practical compatibility test

Use this sequence before assuming that the controller can replace a mouse:

  1. Pair the controller and verify that Android recognizes its buttons or sticks in a game or other controller-aware interface.
  2. Check the manual or manufacturer documentation for an explicit Android cursor or mouse mode. If no such mode is documented, expect gamepad input only.
  3. Activate the mode exactly as documented, then watch for pointer movement in the Android interface or target app. Successful pairing without pointer movement means the controller is still operating as a gamepad.
  4. Test the specific app you care about. Try the controls you actually need rather than relying on one successful click.
  5. Check the app’s own settings for controller, gamepad, keyboard, accessibility, or external-input support. Some games require controller support to be enabled before they process events.
  6. Repeat the test after changing only one variable—mode, app setting, connection type, or Android device—so you can identify which part controls the result.

What “mouse support” still cannot guarantee

A pointer-capable controller is not automatically equivalent to a multitouch screen. Android’s fake-touch definition names a limited set of emulated interactions: pointer tap, double-tap, drag, and fling. An app can require two simultaneous touch points, a pinch gesture, a rotation gesture, a long press with timing rules, or a custom gesture that the controller’s mouse mode does not produce.

  • One pointer is not two fingers. A stick-driven cursor normally supplies one pointer location, so pinch-to-zoom and other two-finger operations may be unavailable.
  • Click semantics vary. A controller’s confirmation key may map to a primary click, but the app can interpret that event differently or ignore it.
  • Scrolling depends on the implementation. A stick may move a cursor without generating a scroll wheel event; another design may encode scrolling as a separate command.
  • Drag requires the correct sequence. The controller must generate a press, sustained movement, and release that the app recognizes as a drag.
  • Touch-only screens can remain inaccessible. If an app does not consume pointer, gamepad, or compatible keyboard events, mouse mode cannot force it to respond.

If it works in one app but not another

The first app responds, the second does nothing

The second app may be touch-only or may not implement the same input path. Confirm that the controller is still in mouse mode, then inspect the app’s input settings. If the app documents only touch controls, there may be no controller-side fix.

Buttons work, but there is no cursor

This usually indicates ordinary gamepad mode rather than mouse mode. Recheck the manual for a separate operating state. Android’s button-remapping tools can change actions but do not, by themselves, create pointer movement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cursor moves, but a click fails

Check which key the controller assigns to confirmation and whether the app accepts that pointer-button event. Test a simple control and then a different app. If movement works consistently but clicking fails everywhere, the controller’s mouse implementation may expose movement without a compatible primary-button event.

A game ignores mouse mode

Some games expect direct gamepad input and may require that support to be enabled. Switch back to gamepad mode and use the game’s controller settings when the objective is gameplay rather than general pointer control.

Behavior changes between phones

Input handling can differ by Android version, device configuration, form factor, and manufacturer implementation. The manual example’s reference to certain older MediaTek phones is a reminder that a mode can have device-specific qualifications.

The dependable alternative: a Bluetooth or USB mouse

Google’s Android Accessibility Help documents connecting a Bluetooth or USB mouse. This is the general, documented route when you need a pointer across Android interfaces and apps that support mouse input. It does not turn the game controller into a mouse, but it avoids relying on a controller’s proprietary mode.

Supported Android versions also offer Autoclick, sometimes called dwell clicking. With a mouse pointer resting over an item for the configured dwell time, Android can perform actions such as a normal click, long press, right click, double click, drag, and scroll. Availability and exact steps depend on the Android version; Google notes that some instructions apply only to Android 11 and later.

Choosing the right input method

Your goal Most suitable approach Reason
Play a game that supports controllers Standard gamepad mode Direct gamepad support gives the app the input it was designed to consume.
Use a particular controller as a pointer That controller’s documented Android mouse mode Only the hardware or its software can provide the extra pointer capability.
Control many Android apps reliably Bluetooth or USB mouse Android documents this as the general pointer-input method.
Operate controls after a pointer dwells Mouse plus Autoclick on a supported Android version Dwell timing can provide click, long-press, double-click, drag, and scroll actions.

Bottom line for the “every app” question

You cannot use an ordinary Android game controller as a mouse in every app. Android’s built-in controller features cover connection and remapping, not a universal controller-to-pointer conversion. A controller with a dedicated Android mouse mode may work where the target app accepts its cursor and click events, but support remains dependent on the hardware, Android device, Android version, and app. For consistent pointer operation, use a Bluetooth or USB mouse and enable Autoclick when its dwell features meet your needs.
