Can You Use an 8BitDo Mechanical Keyboard and Joystick for Modern PC Games?

Yes—on a modern Windows PC, the 8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard is officially supported from Windows 10 version 1903 onward. The “joystick” part depends on which product you mean. 8BitDo lists the Super Stick as an optional keyboard extension, but its official product information does not establish that it is an analog gamepad stick or that every game will recognize it as a controller. If you want a dedicated joystick, the separate Arcade Stick for Xbox is the clearer choice: it supports Windows 10 and later and offers joystick and gamepad modes.

The short answer: the keyboard works, but “joystick” needs a precise definition

8BitDo lists its 87-key Retro Mechanical Keyboard as compatible with Windows 10 (1903) and above. It can connect by Bluetooth Low Energy, 2.4G wireless or wired USB, and it supports programmable keys through 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2. That is sufficient for normal Windows keyboard input and for games that accept keyboard bindings.

The uncertainty concerns the accessory called the Super Stick. 8BitDo names it as one of the keyboard’s available extensions, alongside the Super Button and Super ABXY, but the product information does not specify whether the Super Stick is analog, which Windows input device it presents, or how individual games interpret its movement. You should therefore treat it as a keyboard extension until the listing for your exact bundle and the game’s own input menu confirm otherwise.

If by “joystick” you mean a separate arcade controller, 8BitDo’s Arcade Stick for Xbox is the relevant product. 8BitDo lists it for Windows 10 and above, with wired USB-C and 2.4G wireless connections, plus joystick and gamepad modes.

What the Retro Mechanical Keyboard can do on a PC

Windows compatibility

“Compatible with Windows 10 (1903) and above” is an operating-system claim. It means the keyboard is intended to connect to supported Windows versions; it does not promise that every game exposes the same key assignments or accepts every programmable function.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a normal keyboard-controlled title, the important test is simple: can Windows receive letters, numbers and function keys from the device, and can the game bind those keys? If both answers are yes, the keyboard can be used like any other PC keyboard regardless of its retro styling.

Three ways to connect

  • Wired USB: Use this first when diagnosing a problem because it removes wireless pairing and battery variables.
  • 2.4G wireless: Useful when you want a dedicated wireless receiver connection and your package includes the required receiver.
  • Bluetooth Low Energy: Convenient for compatible Windows systems, but pairing and reconnect behavior depend on the computer’s Bluetooth hardware and Windows settings.

The Xbox Edition lists wired USB, Bluetooth 5.0 and 2.4G wireless rather than the standard model’s Bluetooth Low Energy wording. Do not assume that accessories, firmware behavior or included components are identical between editions.

  • Programmable keys, Dual Super Buttons, and Super Stick, with independent control panel.
  • 87 keys. Top mount style with Kailh Box White Switches.

Programmable keys and software

8BitDo states that the Retro Mechanical Keyboard supports programmable keys and Ultimate Software V2. Use that software only for functions exposed for your model, then confirm the resulting key output inside the game. A key remap that works at the Windows level can still be rejected by a title that restricts bindings or treats that key differently.

How to set up the keyboard for a PC game

  1. Check the model and Windows version. Confirm that the computer runs Windows 10 version 1903 or later. If you have an Xbox Edition keyboard, use the edition’s support information rather than assuming the standard model’s details apply.
  2. Choose one connection method. Start with wired USB for the cleanest test. Once Windows sees the keyboard, you can switch to 2.4G wireless or Bluetooth if those options are included and preferred.
  3. Verify Windows input before launching the game. Open a text field and press several letter keys, modifiers and any keys you intend to bind. This separates a connection problem from a game-configuration problem.
  4. Apply only necessary remaps. If you need a different layout, configure programmable keys in Ultimate Software V2. Record the resulting key assignments so the in-game bindings match them.
  5. Open the game’s keyboard controls. Look for its keyboard, controls or key-bindings screen and assign the physical keys you tested. Save the profile, then test movement, actions and menu navigation in a safe area.
  6. Test the wireless mode separately. If the wired connection works but wireless does not, return to USB while checking the receiver or Bluetooth pairing. Do not troubleshoot game bindings and wireless pairing at the same time.

What the Super Stick does—and what has not been established

The Super Stick is named by 8BitDo as a keyboard extension for the Retro Mechanical Keyboard. That confirms that it belongs to the keyboard’s accessory ecosystem; it does not, by itself, confirm that Windows will enumerate it as a standard joystick or XInput gamepad.

The official information available for this product does not state:

  • whether the stick reports analog or digital movement;
  • whether it appears to Windows as keyboard keys, a joystick, a gamepad or another device;
  • whether it works without additional software;
  • which games recognize it; or
  • whether every keyboard bundle includes it.

Before buying or relying on it, check the exact retailer listing for bundle contents and look for the game’s own input options. If the title only accepts gamepad axes, a keyboard extension that emits keys will not behave like an analog stick. Conversely, a title that accepts remappable keyboard input may work even when it does not expose a controller profile. The manufacturer’s keyboard page is the authoritative starting point: https://www.8bitdo.com/retro-mechanical-keyboard/.

When the Arcade Stick for Xbox is the better choice

The 8BitDo Arcade Stick for Xbox is a separate product, not the Super Stick attached to the mechanical keyboard. 8BitDo lists Windows 10 and above, wired USB-C and 2.4G wireless, and both joystick and gamepad modes. Those are the specifications that directly answer a reader seeking a dedicated arcade controller.

8Bitdo Retro 108 Mechanical Wireless Keyboard for PC & Android, N Edition
  • Inspired by the classics. Compatible with Windows 10(1903) or above, and Android 9.0 or above.
  • 108-key full layout. Integrated numpad and function key shortcuts.
  • Kailh Box White Switches V2. Dye-sub PBT keycaps. Top mount style. Hot-swappable PCB. Support n-key rollover.
  • Dye-sublimation PBT keycaps with MDA-like height.
  • Fast-mapping on programmable buttons (no software needed).

Its role is different from the keyboard’s. Choose it when you want an arcade control layout, particularly for fighting games, and when the game can use the selected joystick or gamepad mode. You still need to open the game’s input settings and confirm that the directional control and buttons are assigned as expected; Windows compatibility alone is not a game-by-game guarantee.

Because the Arcade Stick is standalone, buying it does not add joystick functionality to the Retro Mechanical Keyboard. Conversely, buying the keyboard does not automatically provide the Arcade Stick’s modes.

Keyboard input, controller input and Steam are separate questions

A game can support a Windows keyboard without supporting a controller, or support a controller while offering limited keyboard remapping. Test the input type the game actually exposes rather than inferring it from the product’s appearance.

8BitDo’s Steam compatibility page describes Steam Input support and controller features such as button mapping and gyro configuration for compatible controllers. It does not establish that the Retro Mechanical Keyboard or Super Stick is a Steam-compatible controller. Do not expect Steam’s controller configuration screens to appear for the keyboard simply because the keyboard carries Xbox-inspired styling.

For a keyboard, use the game’s keyboard settings. For the Arcade Stick, select and configure the gamepad or joystick mode that the title supports. If Steam sees a device differently from the game’s native input menu, compare both configurations instead of assuming one profile applies to the other.

Xbox Edition: Windows yes, Xbox console no

The Xbox Edition is marketed as “Designed with Xbox,” officially licensed and compatible with Windows and Android. That branding describes its design and licensing, not console compatibility.

The manufacturer’s support FAQ answers “No” to whether the keyboard can be used on Xbox consoles. The support page is available at https://wwwuat.8bitdo.com/support/product/retro-87-mechanical-keyboard-xbox/. Plan on Windows PC use rather than assuming that an Xbox button or Xbox-themed key makes the keyboard a console peripheral.

The same FAQ states that the Xbox button itself does not support remapping, while the included Dual Super Buttons are programmable according to the product page. Treat those as separate controls when building a layout.

A keyboard plus an unusual desktop control Retro Mechanical Keyboard with the Super Stick, if offered Exact bundle contents and the game’s actual input type; analog/controller behavior is not established by the product page

Troubleshooting common failures

Windows receives no keystrokes

Switch to wired USB and test in a text field. If USB works, revisit the 2.4G receiver or Bluetooth pairing. If USB also fails, confirm the Windows version and that you are using the correct cable and keyboard mode for the product.

The keyboard works in Windows but not in one game

That points to the game’s control configuration rather than basic Windows compatibility. Open the title’s keyboard settings, bind a simple key, save, and test. Some games limit which keys or devices can be assigned; the available manufacturer information does not provide a universal game list.

The Super Stick is not shown as a controller

Do not assume that this is a defect. 8BitDo’s keyboard page does not document the Super Stick’s Windows enumeration or controller emulation. Check whether the game accepts keyboard input, test the extension’s available assignments, and consult the exact product listing or current manufacturer support information before treating it as an analog gamepad.

Steam shows no controller layout

The Steam page’s controller feature statements do not establish Steam-controller support for the keyboard or Super Stick. Configure the keyboard in the game’s own key-bindings screen, or use the Arcade Stick’s documented joystick/gamepad modes when a controller profile is required.

You expected it to work on an Xbox console

The Retro 87 Xbox Edition support FAQ says it cannot be used on Xbox consoles. Its Windows compatibility remains valid, but the two platforms should not be conflated.

Bottom line

For modern Windows PC games, the 8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard is a supported Windows keyboard from version 1903 onward, with wired, Bluetooth and 2.4G connection options. It is a sound choice when the game accepts keyboard input. The Super Stick is an optional keyboard extension whose analog behavior and controller compatibility are not documented in the cited product information, so verify the specific game and bundle before treating it as a joystick. If you need a clearly defined standalone joystick, choose the separate Arcade Stick for Xbox, which 8BitDo lists for Windows 10 and later with joystick and gamepad modes.
