Yes—but use AI only as a drafting and organizing aid, not as an authority on your workers’ compensation claim. You can ask it to organize your own timeline, summarize documents for your review, or draft questions. Check every detail against original records, follow the rules for your specific claim program, and avoid sharing unnecessary sensitive information.
What AI can—and cannot—do for a claim
Generative AI may help turn notes you provide into a clearer chronology, make a checklist from official instructions, summarize a document for your own review, or draft questions for a claims office or representative. These are practical uses, not uses endorsed or evaluated for claimants by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL).

DOL’s 2025 AI strategy describes agency applications such as document analysis and summarization, extracting information from complex forms, and redacting personally identifiable information. Those government use cases do not establish that a consumer chatbot will be accurate or appropriate for preparing your personal claim. DOL 2025 AI Strategies

How to check an AI-generated draft
- Start with your records. Gather the notes and documents you will use to prepare the claim. Keep the originals as your reference.
- Ask for organization, not invention. For example, ask AI to arrange the facts you supplied by date or to turn official instructions into a checklist. Tell it to flag missing information rather than guess.
- Verify every detail. Check each name, date, work event, symptom, treatment, wage, and requested benefit against the original records. Correct errors yourself.
- Use the official instructions and channel. Confirm the appropriate form and submission method with the agency responsible for your claim. Do not submit AI output in place of required forms or supporting information.
- Keep a human in the loop. If facts are disputed, instructions are unclear, or you need help assessing your rights, contact the responsible agency or a qualified representative familiar with your jurisdiction.
Which claim system and forms apply?
Workers’ compensation is not one nationwide filing system. The relevant forms, deadlines, and process depend on the program and jurisdiction. Federal Employees’ Compensation Act (FECA), Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation, and state claims are not interchangeable.
Federal employees covered by FECA
DOL directs federal employees to register for its free ECOMP web application and file the appropriate form. CA-1 is for a qualifying traumatic injury connected to a specific work event or series of events during a single day or shift. CA-2 is for an occupational disease caused by continued or repeated exposure over more than one workday or shift. Follow DOL’s federal employee claim-filing instructions for the applicable process.
DOL says, “You do not need approval from your supervisor or anyone else at your agency to initiate your FECA workers’ compensation claim.” That statement applies to starting a FECA claim; it should not be generalized to state systems or other programs.

Longshore claims
DOL’s Longshore program has separate forms, claimant resources, and filing instructions. Claimants can submit case documents electronically through SEAPortal. Use the program’s claimant and injured worker page and document-submission guidance; do not assume FECA forms apply.

State claims
For a state-regulated claim, check the relevant state agency’s forms, deadlines, and submission instructions. Federal FECA guidance and Longshore procedures do not define state requirements.
Protect medical, wage, and identifying information
Claim materials may contain medical details, wages, dates of birth, employer information, and claim identifiers. Official rules may protect information held in an agency claim file, but those protections do not establish how a separate consumer AI service handles prompts or uploaded files.

DOL explains privacy protections and routine access to FECA claim information in its Rights of the Injured Employee resource. Its Longshore FAQ discusses claim-file access and release of information. Texas separately states that information in or derived from a workers’ compensation claim file is confidential except as provided by state law; see the Texas Division of Workers’ Compensation claim-file information page. These sources concern official files, not the practices of an AI provider.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Before using a service, check its current terms for prompt retention, model training, deletion, and account controls.
- Share only what is necessary. Avoid entering identifiers or uploading an entire medical or claim file when a redacted excerpt or your own notes will do.
- If you are unsure what information is needed, use a blank template or ask the agency or a qualified representative.
When human help is especially useful
Consider contacting the responsible agency or a workers’ compensation attorney or authorized representative if the claim is disputed, the filing route is unclear, or you need advice about your rights. DOL’s Longshore FAQ recognizes attorneys and authorized representatives as people who may access files for claim administration. That does not make representation mandatory or establish that any particular lawyer is suitable for every claim.
