Usually, yes—but only when the controller and its charging setup support playing while connected. On some models, one USB cable carries both game input and charging power. Others support wired play but do not recharge the installed batteries, while some require a model-specific rechargeable pack or charging grip.
Check the exact controller, battery type, cable and charging accessory before assuming that plugging in a cable will let you keep playing.

What determines whether you can play while charging?
“Wireless controller” describes several different designs. A controller may use a built-in lithium battery, replaceable AA cells, a removable rechargeable pack, or a separate charging grip. Its USB port may support data, charging, or both. The console, computer or power adapter connected to the other end of the cable also affects the result.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →There are three separate questions to answer:
- Does the controller accept gameplay input over the cable? This is wired-play support.
- Does that same connection charge the battery? A USB port can provide power without recharging the installed cells.
- Is a special battery, battery door or charging accessory required? Some controllers cannot charge ordinary replaceable batteries internally.
If the manual confirms wired play and USB charging, you can generally continue playing while the battery charges. If it documents only charging, the controller may need to remain idle. If it uses replaceable batteries, the cable may power the controller without charging those batteries at all.

Official examples: what each controller actually supports
The following examples show why the model name matters more than the word “wireless.”
| Controller or accessory | Wired play | Charging while connected | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation DualSense | Sony documents Bluetooth wireless mode and wired USB mode when the controller is directly connected to a PS5. | Sony describes USB-C charging. | Use a standard-compliant USB cable and a compatible power source. Sony warns that some devices may not charge the controller. |
| Xbox Wireless Controller with USB-C cable | Microsoft says the controller can be used wirelessly or for wired gaming with the included USB-C cable. | The product documentation does not establish that ordinary AA batteries recharge inside the controller. | A rechargeable battery pack has its own compatibility and charging requirements. |
| Nintendo Switch Joy-Con with HAC-011 grip | The included grip holds the Joy-Con for play. | No. Nintendo says the standard HAC-011 Joy-Con Grip does not charge the controllers. | It is not the same product as the separately sold charging grip. |
| Nintendo Switch Joy-Con with HAC-012 Charging Grip | Yes, the accessory is designed for use during play. | Yes, Nintendo says it lets you keep playing while charging Joy-Con. | Confirm that the accessory is HAC-012, not the included HAC-011 grip. |
| PowerA Advantage Wireless for Xbox | PowerA supports play over its supplied USB-C cable. | Yes. PowerA states that simultaneous play and charging work even when the battery is fully depleted. | This statement applies to the named Advantage Wireless model, not every wireless controller. |
These examples are not interchangeable. A feature documented for one model cannot be extended automatically to another controller from the same platform.
How USB behaves during gameplay
USB used for both data and power
When a controller supports wired mode, the USB connection can send button, stick and trigger input to the console or computer while also supplying power. The PlayStation DualSense and the Xbox Wireless Controller are documented examples of this arrangement. In this setup, the controller may switch from Bluetooth to wired operation as soon as you connect the cable, depending on the platform and settings.

USB used for charging only
Some controllers expose a charging port without accepting gameplay data through it. Connecting such a controller to a wall adapter can refill the battery, but connecting it to a console does not necessarily create a wired control link. The controller may remain wireless while charging, or it may disable input until charging is complete.

A cable that powers the controller but does not charge its batteries
Controllers designed for replaceable AA batteries are a common source of confusion. A USB cable can let the controller operate from USB power while the AA cells remain unchanged. Do not assume that the presence of a USB-C port means the batteries inside are rechargeable.
Battery type matters
Built-in rechargeable battery
A built-in battery is normally charged through the controller’s specified port. If the manual also confirms wired play, you can use the controller during charging. With the DualSense, Sony specifies USB-C charging and a wired USB mode, but also says that some charging devices may not work. Use the cable and power source that meet the controller’s requirements rather than treating every USB outlet as equivalent.
Replaceable AA batteries
Standard AA batteries generally do not become rechargeable merely because a USB cable is connected. For an Xbox controller, Microsoft’s USB-C wired-gaming documentation does not say that installed AA batteries recharge in the controller. Remove rechargeable cells only if the battery manufacturer’s instructions require it, and use a dedicated charger when the cells are not designed for in-controller charging.

Removable rechargeable battery pack
A pack made for a particular controller can add charge-through capability, but the pack, battery door and controller revision must match. PowerA’s Play and Charge Kit manual, for example, specifies the appropriate charge-through door for Xbox One and for Xbox Series X|S versions. A mismatched door or pack can prevent the connector from seating correctly or stop charging.

Joy-Con charging accessory
Nintendo’s naming is especially important. The included HAC-011 Joy-Con Grip does not charge Joy-Con. The separately sold HAC-012 Joy-Con Charging Grip is the accessory intended to charge the controllers while you continue playing. If the Joy-Con battery indicator is not increasing, verify the grip’s model number before troubleshooting the cable or console.
How to check your own controller before playing
- Read the exact model name and revision. Look on the rear label, battery compartment, packaging or the console’s accessory settings. “Xbox controller,” “wireless gamepad” or “Joy-Con grip” is not specific enough.
- Identify the battery arrangement. Determine whether the battery is built in, uses AA cells, or is a removable rechargeable pack. Check whether the pack is an approved accessory for that controller version.
- Find the wired-mode statement. In the manual or support page, look for wording such as “wired gaming,” “wired USB mode” or “play while charging.” A charging-only statement is not proof of wired gameplay.
- Check the port and cable specification. Match USB-C or another connector exactly, and use a cable that supports the controller’s required data and power functions. A cable that fits physically may still lack the necessary wiring or may be damaged.
- Choose a suitable power source. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for a console USB port, computer port or adapter. Sony specifically notes that some devices might not charge a DualSense even when the cable fits.
- Test before a long session. Connect the controller, start a game, and confirm that button input works. Then check whether the battery indicator rises after several minutes. Input without a rising battery level means the cable may be providing data or operating power without charging.
Platform-specific guidance
PlayStation DualSense
Sony’s DualSense guidance supports two relevant modes: Bluetooth wireless use and wired USB use when directly connected to a PS5. The controller charges through USB-C. For a reliable test, connect it directly to the PS5 with a standard-compliant cable, verify that the game responds to the controller, and check the battery indicator. If it operates but does not charge, try the power source and cable combination specified by Sony; some devices may not provide compatible charging.
Sony’s “PS5: The Ultimate FAQ” is dated November 9, 2020, so treat any time estimate from that older FAQ as historical rather than a universal current charging promise. The wired-mode and charging requirements remain the relevant compatibility points.
Xbox Wireless Controller
Microsoft documents wireless play and wired gaming through the included USB-C cable. That establishes that the cable can carry gameplay input. It does not establish that ordinary AA batteries recharge inside the controller. If you want charging during play, use a rechargeable pack that is explicitly made for your controller and follow the pack’s instructions.

When fitting an Xbox rechargeable kit, confirm the controller generation and battery-door design. PowerA’s Play and Charge Kit documentation distinguishes Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S doors, so a pack that fits one version should not be assumed to fit another.
Nintendo Switch Joy-Con
The included HAC-011 Joy-Con Grip is a holder, not a charger. Nintendo says Joy-Con do not charge while attached to that grip. The HAC-012 Joy-Con Charging Grip is the model designed to charge while you play. Check the printed model number or product documentation before buying a replacement or diagnosing a non-charging setup.
PowerA Advantage Wireless
PowerA’s Advantage Wireless support FAQ directly answers the question: “Yes, you can play and charge simultaneously using the supplied USB-C cable, even if the battery is fully depleted.” That is a clear model-specific confirmation. It should not be generalized to other wireless controllers, including other products that use USB-C.

- Confirm the accessory. A standard grip, data cable or AA battery setup may not include charging hardware.
- Check the battery pack and door. For removable packs, verify the exact controller generation and that the charge-through door is installed.
- Try the documented power source. Some controllers will not charge from every adapter, hub or device, even if the connector is correct.
- Try another known-good cable. Inspect for loose plugs, bent contacts or intermittent disconnects. Use a cable that supports the required data function when wired play is expected.
- Check whether the battery is actually increasing. An on-screen wired connection or a lit indicator can show that the controller has power without proving that the battery is charging.
- Test without the console. If the manufacturer permits it, connect to an appropriate USB power source. This helps distinguish a console-port issue from a controller or battery issue.
- Stop if the battery or connector becomes unusually hot, swells or smells abnormal. Disconnect it and follow the manufacturer’s service or replacement guidance rather than continuing to play.
Can you play if the battery is completely empty?
Only controllers that can draw operating power through the cable, or that have a charging accessory designed for immediate use, can reliably do this. PowerA explicitly says its Advantage Wireless can be played and charged even when fully depleted. For other models, a depleted battery may prevent wireless operation until it has recovered enough charge, even if the cable is connected. The manual’s wired-play specification is the deciding evidence.

Does playing while charging damage the controller?
Playing during charging is not inherently a problem when the manufacturer designed the controller and accessory for simultaneous use. The safer approach is to use the supplied or specification-compliant cable, avoid forcing connectors, keep ventilation around the device, and follow the battery pack’s instructions. Do not modify a battery door, combine an unapproved pack with a charge-through cable, or treat a controller as charge-compatible solely because it has a USB-C socket.
Bottom line for common setups
A wireless controller can often be used while its battery charges, but the answer is model-specific. DualSense supports wired USB play and USB-C charging with compatible equipment. Xbox controllers support USB-C wired gaming, while AA-battery charging depends on the separate rechargeable pack rather than the cable alone. Nintendo Joy-Con require the HAC-012 Charging Grip for play while charging; the included HAC-011 grip does not charge them. PowerA confirms simultaneous play and charging for its Advantage Wireless model with the supplied cable, including when the battery is fully depleted.
Verify three things before you start: the controller supports wired input, the battery system supports charging through that connection, and the cable or accessory matches the exact model.
