Can You Use a Wired Controller with a Steam Machine?

Yes. Valve supports third-party gamepads connected directly to a Steam Machine through a compatible USB port. A wired controller can even be used to navigate and complete the Machine’s initial setup, so Bluetooth is not required to get started.

The practical limits are the connector, the cable and the game. The controller must fit an available USB-A or USB-C port with a data-capable cable, and a USB connection does not guarantee that every controller feature or every game will behave identically.

What Valve officially supports

Valve’s Steam Machine support guidance explicitly tells owners with a third-party gamepad to plug it into one of the Machine’s USB ports and use it to navigate setup. That makes a wired controller a supported input method, not merely a workaround after the system has been configured.

— Valve Steam Support, Steam Machine Feature & Troubleshooting guide

Valve also documents a direct USB-C wired mode for its current Steam Controller. The Steam Machine hardware information lists both USB-A and USB-C ports, so the correct plug depends on the port you choose and the connector fitted to your controller or cable.

That confirmation answers the connection question, but it is not a promise of universal compatibility. Steam Input supports recognized controller device types, while individual models, optional features and games can still differ. Treat “the Machine detects the controller” and “this game supports every function” as two separate checks.

Check these three things before connecting

1. The available port

Look at the Machine’s open USB ports and identify whether the port you intend to use is USB-A or USB-C. A controller with a fixed USB-A plug needs a matching port, while a controller that uses a detachable cable may accept USB-C at the controller end and USB-A or USB-C at the Machine end, depending on the cable.

Do not force a plug. If the connector does not physically match, use an appropriate cable or another compatible port rather than an adapter of uncertain quality.

2. A cable that carries data

Some USB cables are intended only for charging. They can deliver power without carrying controller input, leaving the gamepad lit up but invisible to the Machine. For wired play, use the controller’s supplied cable when available, or a replacement explicitly described as supporting USB data transfer.

A separate cable is not automatically required. Controllers with a permanently attached USB lead are ready to plug in; a detachable controller needs a cable only if one is not already attached or included.

3. The target game’s controller support

Steam Input can translate supported controller devices for games, but Valve’s documentation does not establish that every third-party model, special button, motion function or platform-specific feature works in every title. Before buying a controller for one particular game, check that game’s own controller support and the Steam Input options presented for it.

How to connect a wired controller during first-time setup

  1. Locate a compatible USB port. Choose an available USB-A or USB-C port that matches the controller plug or the cable you plan to use.
  2. Connect the controller. Insert the plug fully. If the controller uses a detachable lead, connect the controller end first and then the Machine end, following the cable’s connector shapes.
  3. Confirm that the cable supports data. If the controller receives power but no input is detected, replace a charge-only cable with a known data cable before changing software settings.
  4. Use the gamepad to navigate setup. Valve’s setup instructions specifically allow a connected third-party gamepad to navigate and complete initial configuration, so you can proceed without pairing Bluetooth first.
  5. Finish the on-screen setup. Keep the controller connected while you move through the setup screens. Avoid unplugging it until the setup process has completed or another input method is available.

This wired path is particularly useful when you have not yet configured wireless accessories. A controller does not need to be paired over Bluetooth to provide the input required for the initial setup.

Using the controller after setup

Once setup is complete, you can continue using the same USB connection for games and system navigation. Valve also documents Bluetooth pairing for a Bluetooth-capable controller after setup, but that is an optional alternative rather than a prerequisite for wired use.

Valve’s current Steam Controller

Valve’s current Steam Controller connection guide describes direct USB-C wired use. Use a suitable USB-C data cable and connect it to a compatible Machine port. The documented USB-C mode is a concrete example of the broader USB support described in the Steam Machine guide.

A third-party gamepad

For another manufacturer’s controller, the general process is the same: connect it to a compatible USB port, allow the Machine and Steam Input to identify it, and then check the game’s controller settings if behavior differs from what you expect. The official guidance supports the USB connection, but it does not publish a model-by-model list covering every third-party gamepad.

Wired versus Bluetooth: which connection should you choose?

Consideration Wired USB Bluetooth
Initial setup Valve explicitly supports using a connected third-party gamepad to navigate and complete setup. Valve describes Bluetooth pairing as an option after setup.
Physical connection Requires a matching USB-A or USB-C port and a suitable data cable. Requires a Bluetooth-capable controller and pairing after setup.
Valve-documented example The current Steam Controller guide documents direct USB-C use. Valve’s Steam Machine guidance allows pairing a Bluetooth-capable controller after setup.
Game behavior USB recognition does not by itself guarantee every game-specific feature. Wireless pairing also does not remove the need to check the game’s controller and Steam Input support.

Choose wired when you want the simplest setup path, already have a suitable cable, or prefer not to pair a controller. Choose Bluetooth after setup when avoiding a cable is more important to you and your controller supports the required pairing process.

What Steam Input does—and does not—guarantee

Steam Input is the software layer that supports controller device types and can provide game-specific input handling. Its presence means the Machine and Steam can recognize supported controller categories; it does not mean that every physical control or feature is represented identically in every game.

Basic recognition

If the controller is connected with a data-capable cable and the Machine recognizes it, standard buttons and sticks may be available for system navigation and supported games. Recognition is the first checkpoint, not the final compatibility verdict.

Per-game behavior

A game may expose its own controller settings or rely on Steam Input configuration. If a controller works in the Steam interface but not inside one title, inspect that game’s controller support and the Steam Input settings associated with it. Do not assume that a successful USB connection proves that the title supports every input mode.

Special features

The available evidence does not promise identical support for model-specific features across all games. Features beyond ordinary gamepad input should therefore be treated as game- and model-dependent unless the game or controller documentation says otherwise.

Troubleshooting a wired controller

The controller has lights or power but no input

  • Unplug and reconnect the controller firmly.
  • Try another compatible USB port on the Machine.
  • Replace the cable if it may be charge-only; power delivery alone does not prove that data is passing.
  • Check that the plug type matches the port. The Machine provides USB-A and USB-C options, but a connector still has to fit correctly.

It works during setup but not in one game

This pattern points away from the basic USB connection and toward game-level support or configuration. Check the title’s controller options and its Steam Input settings. The fact that a gamepad can navigate setup establishes that the Machine can receive input; it does not establish that every game maps that controller in the same way.

Only some controls behave as expected

Confirm that the game supports the controller type and the feature you are trying to use. Steam Input supports controller device types, but the reviewed Valve material does not promise universal behavior for every model-specific control or feature.

You do not have a Bluetooth connection yet

You do not need one for initial setup. Valve’s instruction is to plug a third-party gamepad into a USB port and use it to navigate and complete setup. Bluetooth can be paired later if you want a wireless option.

The controller uses a different connector

Match the cable to both ends: the controller socket and the Machine port. When a detachable controller accepts USB-C, use a USB-C data cable and connect it to a compatible Machine port. When the controller has a USB-A plug, use a matching USB-A port. Never rely on a cable described only as a charging lead.

Choosing a wired controller or replacement cable

Controller checklist

  • Verify that the controller has a USB connection suitable for data, either through a fixed lead or a detachable cable.
  • Confirm which connector the controller uses and whether the supplied lead reaches your intended seating position.
  • Check the target games’ controller support instead of relying only on the fact that the Machine accepts USB gamepads.
  • Consider whether you need a particular feature beyond standard buttons and sticks; Valve does not publish a universal model-by-model compatibility table in the cited guidance.

Cable checklist

  • Choose a cable that explicitly supports data transfer.
  • Match USB-A and USB-C ends to the controller and the Machine port.
  • Use the manufacturer-supplied cable when possible, since it is the clearest match for that controller.
  • Replace a suspect cable before concluding that the controller or Machine is incompatible.

When a wired connection makes the most sense

A wired controller is the most straightforward choice when you are setting up a Steam Machine for the first time, troubleshooting wireless pairing, or using a controller that does not offer Bluetooth. It also gives you a clear physical connection to test: port, plug and data cable.

Wireless use remains available after setup for Bluetooth-capable controllers, but it adds a pairing step and does not change the need to verify game-level support. If a particular game is your priority, make that title’s controller requirements the deciding factor rather than assuming that USB recognition settles the question.

Bottom line

Yes, you can use a wired controller with a Steam Machine. Plug a compatible third-party gamepad into a matching USB-A or USB-C port with a data-capable cable, and you can use it to complete initial setup. Afterward, continue over USB or pair Bluetooth if preferred. For any game that behaves differently, check its controller support and Steam Input configuration; the wired connection itself is supported, but universal feature support is not guaranteed.
