Yes—but only for supported PS4 games. A DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller pairs with a PS5 and works when you play PS4 titles through backward compatibility. A native PS5 game must be played with a DualSense wireless controller, so a DUALSHOCK 4 cannot replace it for PS5 versions of games. Pairing takes a compatible USB cable, the PS button and a user selection; after that, you can unplug the cable and play wirelessly.
PS4 controller compatibility on PS5 at a glance
The console determines controller compatibility by the game version you launch, not simply by whether the disc or download is associated with a PS4. If the title is running as a supported PS4 game, DUALSHOCK 4 is accepted. If it is a native PS5 game, the console expects DualSense.

PlayStation’s support guidance says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5, but it also warns that some games can lack functionality or behave unexpectedly. Why the controller works in one game but not another
PS4 games use the PS4 control model
When a PS4 title runs on PS5, it retains the PS4 version’s input requirements. DUALSHOCK 4 provides the familiar buttons, sticks, triggers, touch pad and motion controls that those games expect. You can also use a DualSense with the same supported PS4 titles, so the PS5 controller is not the only option in this case.

Native PS5 games require DualSense
A game built specifically for PS5 is identified as a PS5 title even when you own a PS4 edition of the same franchise. PlayStation states that PS5 games can only be played with DualSense wireless controllers. If the console displays a message asking for DualSense, changing cables, restarting the game or re-pairing DUALSHOCK 4 will not make that controller an eligible gameplay device; you need to launch the PS4 version, when one exists, or use DualSense. PS VR is a separate compatibility case
Some PS VR software on PS5 has its own peripheral requirements. A title may require or recommend DUALSHOCK 4, a PlayStation Move controller or another specified device. Read the individual game’s instructions before assuming that either standard controller is sufficient. Compatibility for the game and compatibility for its VR accessories are separate questions.
How to connect a DUALSHOCK 4 to PS5
Use these steps for the first connection. They follow PlayStation’s pairing procedure and apply whether you intend to play a PS4 disc, a downloaded PS4 game or a PS4 version selected from a title’s options.

- Turn on the PS5. Wait until the console reaches the home screen or the user-selection screen.
- Connect DUALSHOCK 4 to the PS5 with a compatible USB cable. The cable must carry data as well as power; a charge-only lead may illuminate the controller without completing pairing.
- Press the PS button. The light bar should activate and the console should identify the controller.
- Choose a user profile. Select the account that will use the controller. A temporary or guest profile can be selected if your console offers that option.
- Remove the cable if you want wireless play. Once pairing is complete and the battery has charge, disconnect USB and continue using the controller wirelessly.
PlayStation’s detailed controller instructions are available at DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller support. You do not need to repeat the USB pairing every time you play on the same PS5 unless the controller has been paired with another console or the pairing information has been cleared.
What “paired” means when you own more than one console
A DUALSHOCK 4 can be paired with only one console at a time. If you use it with a different PS4 or PS5, you will normally need to connect it to that console by USB and press the PS button again before it will work there wirelessly. This is why a controller that worked yesterday may appear unresponsive after being used at a friend’s house.
The PS5 supports up to four controllers connected simultaneously. Each player can press the PS button and select a separate user, provided the game supports local multiplayer and has enough player slots. Connecting four controllers does not change the generation rule: all four can use DUALSHOCK 4 only while the active game is a supported PS4 title.

How to make sure you are launching the PS4 version
Many cross-generation games install or display both a PS4 and a PS5 version. If DUALSHOCK 4 is rejected, check the game’s tile and its options menu for the version label. Select the entry marked PS4 rather than PS5. The exact menu wording can vary by title, but the version designation is the decisive detail. If only a PS5 version is installed, DUALSHOCK 4 cannot be used for gameplay; install or start the PS4 edition if the publisher provides one and your license includes it.

A PS4 game disc inserted into a PS5 with a disc drive normally launches the PS4 software, while a digital purchase may present an upgrade or separate PS5 download. Confirm which application is running before troubleshooting the controller. The console’s “PS4” or “PS5” label on the game icon is more useful than the game’s name alone.
Troubleshooting when DUALSHOCK 4 does not work
The controller does not pair at all
- Reconnect the USB cable firmly at both ends and try another known data-capable cable. A cable that only charges cannot complete the initial handshake.
- Charge the controller for a while, then press the PS button again. A depleted battery can make the controller appear dead even when USB power is present.
- Pair from the PS5 user screen rather than from inside a game. Once the profile is assigned, return to the title and test input.
- If the controller was recently used with another console, repeat the USB pairing procedure on this PS5.
The PS5 says a DualSense is required
This is normally a software-version issue, not a damaged DUALSHOCK 4. Exit the game and inspect the installed versions. Launch the supported PS4 edition, or connect a DualSense for the native PS5 edition. No controller reset can bypass the PS5 game’s requirement.

The game starts but a feature is missing
PlayStation cautions that some PS4 games may not offer every function on PS5 and may show unexpected behavior. Missing online services, unusual graphics, unavailable peripherals or a mode that fails to load can therefore be a title-specific backward-compatibility limitation. Check the game’s listing and the developer’s support information before replacing a working controller. The console-level guidance is maintained on PlayStation’s compatibility page.
Input works in the menu but not in a PS VR game
VR titles can require a particular controller for tracking or motion input. Verify the game’s PS VR instructions and connect the specified accessory. A DUALSHOCK 4 being recognized by the PS5 does not guarantee that every VR title accepts it as the active gameplay device.

If your library is mainly PS4 software, keeping DUALSHOCK 4 connected is practical and avoids buying another controller. If you regularly switch between PS4 and PS5 editions, DualSense is the only single-controller choice that covers both generations. You can also keep both paired: use DUALSHOCK 4 for local PS4 multiplayer and reserve DualSense for titles that demand it.

What you need before pairing
- A PS5 console powered on and within reach of the controller.
- A DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller with sufficient battery charge.
- A compatible USB cable that supports data and charging.
- A user profile to assign when the PS button is pressed.
- A supported PS4 game, or a PS VR title whose requirements explicitly accept the controller.
No special adapter, subscription or firmware accessory is identified as necessary in PlayStation’s standard pairing instructions. The deciding factors are the game generation, the title’s support status and whether the controller has been paired to another console.
Bottom line for common situations
- You want to play a PS4 game on PS5: Pair DUALSHOCK 4 by USB, select your user and unplug the cable for wireless play.
- You want to play a PS5 game: Use DualSense; DUALSHOCK 4 is not an eligible gameplay controller.
- You cannot tell which version is running: Check the game’s PS4 or PS5 label and select the PS4 application where available.
- A PS4 title behaves strangely: Treat it as a possible backward-compatibility limitation and check the title-specific support notes.
- You are setting up PS VR: Follow the individual game’s listed peripheral requirements rather than relying on general controller compatibility.
