No—not for native PS2 games on a standard PS5. Sony says DUALSHOCK and DUALSHOCK 2 controllers are not compatible with PS5, and the console’s documented backward compatibility covers supported PS4 games rather than PS2 software. A PS2-to-USB adapter can change a connector or controller signal, but it cannot add PS2 game support to the PS5. Use DualSense for PS5 games, the documented controller options for supported PS4 games, or PS2 hardware (or an official port/remaster) for an actual PS2 title.
The answer depends on both the game and the controller
There are two separate questions hidden in “Can I use a PS2 controller on PS5?” First, can the PS5 run the software? Second, will the console accept the controller? Solving only the connection problem does not solve the software problem.

Sony’s support page says more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5. That figure, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2020 and still presented on its current support information, describes PS4 compatibility only; it is not a count of PS2 games.
Why an original PS2 controller is not compatible with PS5
The DUALSHOCK 2 was designed for the PlayStation 2’s controller interface and software environment. The PS5 does not treat it as a supported controller simply because its buttons and sticks resemble those on a modern gamepad.

Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide is explicit: “Controllers intended for use with PlayStation®, PlayStation®2, and PlayStation®3 consoles, such as the analogue controllers (DUALSHOCK® and DUALSHOCK®2) and the DUALSHOCK®3 wireless controller, are not compatible with the PS5 console.” That statement covers the original wired PS2 pad, not just wireless variants.
Compatibility also depends on the game. Sony states that PS5 games can only be played with DualSense wireless controllers. For supported PS4 games running through PS5 backward compatibility, Sony lists DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4 and officially licensed third-party gamepads. Neither list includes DUALSHOCK 2.
What a PS2-to-USB adapter can—and cannot—do
What the adapter changes
A PS2-to-USB adapter is normally a hardware translator. It reads signals from a PS2 controller and presents them through USB. That may help a device that already supports the adapter’s USB protocol recognize some of the controller’s inputs.

What it does not change
The adapter does not install a PS2 emulator, add PS2 game files, alter Sony’s backward-compatibility policy or make a DUALSHOCK 2 an officially supported PS5 controller. If the PS5 does not support the controller class or the game is not available for the console, converting the plug does not remove either limitation.
Even when an adapter appears as a USB device, behavior can vary by console menu, game, firmware and controller model. A light, button response or USB-device notification is not proof that a PS2 game can run or that every input will work.
Why Brook Wingman PS2 is the wrong direction for this job
Brook’s Wingman PS2 is a retro-console converter intended for using modern controllers with PS2 and PS1 hardware. It is not documented as a way to connect a PS2 controller to a PS5, and it cannot add native PS2 software support to Sony’s current console.

Brook’s FAQ also warns that its compatibility list contains controllers and sticks tested with the converter; an unlisted device may be incompatible or simply untested. That warning is important even when the product is being used in its intended PS2/PS1 direction. It is not evidence of PS5 support.

Native PS5 release
If the title is a PS5 game, connect and use a DualSense wireless controller. Sony’s stated rule is not an adapter recommendation: PS5 games can only be played with DualSense wireless controllers. A PS2 pad connected through a converter is outside that documented path.
PS4 release running on PS5
If the title is a PS4 game that the PS5 supports, use DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4 or an officially licensed third-party gamepad listed for supported PS4 games. Check the game’s store listing or packaging for its PS4/PS5 edition rather than assuming that a similarly named PS2 release is included.

Original PS2 release
If the disc or download is genuinely a PS2 title, first check whether the publisher has released an official PS4 or PS5 port, remaster or other current-console edition. An official re-release changes the software platform; it is not the same thing as inserting or emulating the original PS2 version through a controller adapter.
When no official current-console version exists, the reliable route is PS2 hardware or another separately configured, legally appropriate platform that supports the game. The controller must match that platform’s requirements.

- Read the game’s platform label. Confirm whether the copy is PS5, PS4 or PS2. A PS2 disc, an original PS2 download and a later remaster are different software products.
- Check the PS5 edition or compatibility listing. For a PS4 title, verify that it is among the supported PS4 games. Do not use Sony’s “more than 4,000 PS4 games” figure as evidence that a PS2 version is supported.
- Match the controller to the software. Select DualSense for a PS5 game. Select DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4 or an officially licensed third-party gamepad for a supported PS4 game.
- Look for an official port or remaster if you need PS5 play. This is the step that changes the software available to the console; an adapter alone does not.
- Only then evaluate an adapter. If you are using older hardware, verify the adapter’s intended direction, tested controller list, firmware notes and cable requirements. Do not treat a PS2-to-USB product as a PS5 backward-compatibility upgrade.
If you already bought a PS2-to-USB adapter
The PS5 does not detect it
- Disconnect the adapter and reconnect it directly to the console rather than through an unpowered hub.
- Try the other USB port if your model provides more than one.
- Test the adapter with the platform it was designed for, if you have that hardware. A failure there indicates a cable, power, controller or adapter problem; success there still does not establish PS5 support.
- Check the adapter maker’s manual for required USB power, mode switches and firmware. There is no universal PS2-to-USB standard that guarantees PS5 recognition.
The adapter appears, but the game ignores the controller
Recognition of a USB device is not the same as authorization by a game. Confirm whether the software is a native PS5 title, a supported PS4 title or unsupported PS2 software. For the first two categories, switch to the controller type Sony documents before troubleshooting the adapter further.

Only some buttons or analog functions work
Older controllers and converters can expose different button mappings, analog modes or pressure-sensitive inputs. Consult the adapter’s tested-device list and firmware notes. Brook specifically says that controllers not on its list may be incompatible or not yet tested. Do not assume that a working directional pad means every game function is available.
The PS2 game still will not start
No controller troubleshooting can make an unsupported PS2 title launch as a native PS5 game. Stop changing cables and verify the software edition. Your remaining choices are an official PS4/PS5 release, compatible PS2 hardware or another legally appropriate platform configured for that title.

Buying checklist
- Confirm the direction: “modern controller to PS2” is the opposite of “PS2 controller to PS5.” Product names can make these sound interchangeable.
- Separate software from input: Ask whether the product claims to support the PS5 console, the specific game, the controller model or only an older console. Those are different claims.
- Look for tested-device information: An adapter maker’s compatibility list is more useful than a generic statement that the unit is USB. Unlisted devices may be untested or incompatible.
- Check power and cables: Adapter requirements vary. Follow the exact manual for USB power, port selection, mode buttons and firmware updates.
- Verify the game edition first: If the title has no official PS4/PS5 port or remaster, no controller purchase will create one on an unmodified PS5.
- Keep expectations narrow: A converter may solve a connector or input-mapping problem on supported hardware. It is not a backward-compatibility feature.
Bottom line for common questions
Can I use a PS2 controller on PS5?
Not as a Sony-supported controller. The PS5 Safety Guide specifically excludes DUALSHOCK and DUALSHOCK 2 controllers.

Will a PS2-to-USB adapter work on PS5?
There is no guaranteed or documented PS5 solution. Even if the console recognizes the USB device, the adapter cannot supply native PS2 game support.
Can I play PS2 games on PS5 with a DUALSHOCK 2?
Not native PS2 games. Find an official PS4/PS5 port or remaster, or use PS2 hardware or another legally appropriate platform.
