Can You Use a Free Data Grid in Production? What the License Really Covers

“Free” does not automatically mean you can ship a data grid in a commercial product at no cost. It may mean an evaluation license, free local development but paid deployment, an open-source edition, or a service plan with usage limits. Check the license and pricing terms for production rights, deployment location, features, metering, support, and what happens when a trial or subscription ends.

What does “free” mean for a data grid?

There is no single licensing model. A free offer may let you test software but prohibit production use; permit development on a local machine while requiring a license for deployed domains; provide a commercially usable community edition while reserving features for paid tiers; or offer a free service allowance that runs out when you reach a quota. A trial is another distinct offer: it lasts for a defined period and may not include ongoing free use.

The product matters. The examples below describe separate vendors and are not details of one unnamed data grid. Their terms and prices are vendor-published and can change.

Can you use a free version in production?

Look for explicit wording about commercial use, production use, evaluation, and redistribution. The fact that a grid runs in a prototype, or that a package is available at no cost, does not establish permission to include it in a customer-facing application.

Free evaluation, paid production

DataGridXL describes its evaluation as free for non-production prototypes. Its annual commercial subscription covers production use for one licensed product and named frontend developer seats. The pricing page displayed EUR 999 per year for one seat when accessed in 2026; check the vendor’s pricing page for current terms and price.

Commercial use under an open-source license

SvGrid says its Community edition is MIT-licensed and available for commercial use. That is a different kind of free offer from an evaluation-only license. Read the applicable license and its conditions rather than assuming that every product’s “Community” or “free” label grants the same rights. SvGrid’s pricing page lists its editions and features.

Does free development mean free deployment?

Not necessarily. Some vendors draw the boundary at where the software runs rather than at which features are enabled. A local development environment, staging site, or CI job may be treated differently from a deployed production domain.

Lattice Grid says localhost use is free without a time limit. It allows staging, preview, QA, and CI use without a key, with a watermark; deployment on named domains requires a license. Its pricing page, last updated 20 August 2026, listed $1,000 for one named domain and $2,500 for three domains, including one year of support. Lattice Grid describes its model as hostname/domain licensing and says, “No feature is held back, because there is only one edition.” These are statements about Lattice Grid’s own offer, not a general rule. See its pricing page.

Before building around this model, establish which hostnames count. Ask whether production subdomains, customer-specific domains, staging environments, or additional applications need separate licenses. Do not infer the answer from the fact that development is permitted.

Are features held back for paid editions?

In a tiered product, the free edition may be fully usable for common tasks while paid editions add capabilities that matter for larger or more specialized applications.

SvGrid lists sorting, filtering, grouping, virtualization, and editing among its Community capabilities. Its 2026 pricing page listed Enterprise at $599 per developer and Enterprise Suite at $999 per developer. Enterprise adds features including server-side row model, export/import, pivot, Kanban, and scheduler views; Suite adds spreadsheet and visual-design capabilities. These are the vendor’s listed prices and packaging, not independent assessments. Confirm current details on the SvGrid pricing page.

Contrast that with a deployment-based offer such as Lattice Grid’s: its vendor says there is one edition and no feature is held back, while deployment rights are licensed by domain. “Free versus paid” can therefore describe a feature boundary, a use-rights boundary, or both.

Can a free plan have usage limits?

Yes. For a hosted service, “free” may mean a monthly allowance rather than an unrestricted license. Check what is metered, when the allowance resets, and what happens when it is exhausted.

Datagrid AI’s official pages do not agree on its Free allowance. Its help documentation says Free provides 500 credits a month, while its pricing page shows a $0 Free plan and a Pro plan at $90 per month with 1,000 credits, without reconciling the Free figure. Because of that conflict, the current Free credit amount is not established by those pages. Check the vendor’s pricing page and help documentation before relying on a quota.

What support and reliability come with a free tier?

Free access does not by itself promise technical support, uptime, warranty, or compensation if the service fails. Those commitments, if any, should be stated in the terms or service-level agreement.

Diagrid’s terms provide one SaaS example, not a rule for data-grid products generally: its Free tier is described as a multi-tenant sandbox for development, evaluation, and non-critical workloads, with no warranty, indemnity, support, or service-level commitment. The terms use the wording “AS IS” and “AS AVAILABLE.” Review the Diagrid terms for the applicable conditions.

How is a trial different from a free edition?

A trial is time-limited access; an ongoing free edition or tier has different eligibility and duration terms. A trial can also have conversion conditions, so check whether it expires, requires cancellation, or can become paid.

Diagrid’s terms, last updated 28 July 2026, describe a 14-day free trial. They say a paid deployment trial can convert automatically if a payment method or marketplace entitlement is supplied and the customer does not cancel. That condition is specific to the terms and checkout described by Diagrid. JetBrains DataGrip provides a contrast rather than a data-grid-library example: its documentation describes a 30-day trial, a paid commercial subscription, and complimentary access for eligible users, and says there is no Community edition because functionality is not split into free and paid tiers. See the Diagrid terms and DataGrip licensing documentation.

What should you check before choosing an edition?

  1. Use rights: Confirm whether the license permits evaluation only, personal or non-commercial use, commercial production, and distribution with your application.
  2. Deployment boundary: Identify whether local use, staging, CI, production domains, on-premises installations, or hosted deployments are covered—and whether domains or hostnames are counted separately.
  3. Feature boundary: Compare the specific features you need with the edition’s published list. A product may charge for capabilities, deployment rights, or both.
  4. Metering: Check how developer seats, domains, credits, concurrency, or other limits are counted, when quotas reset, and what happens when they are exceeded.
  5. Support and commitments: Verify whether the plan includes support, warranty, uptime commitments, or an SLA, and whether those terms differ from paid plans.
  6. Term and exit: Check renewal and expiry dates, trial conversion, cancellation requirements, and whether rights to already deployed copies or updates continue after a paid term ends.

If a point that affects your intended deployment is unclear, ask the vendor for written clarification before release. Save the license and pricing terms that apply when you make the decision.
