Usually, you should not remove a foldable phone’s factory-installed inner screen protector. The advice depends on the exact model: Samsung warns that removing its film or applying a non-official one may cause touch problems or screen damage; Google says removing the Pixel Fold’s pre-installed protector can damage the display and says not to add a third-party one; Motorola advises against third-party protectors on the Razr. If the film is lifting or damaged, contact the manufacturer or authorized service provider before trying to peel or replace it.
Why the inner film is different from an ordinary screen protector
A foldable’s inner display is designed to bend, and its protective layers are not necessarily interchangeable with the removable glass protectors used on conventional phones. Samsung describes the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 display as including a replaceable top protective film, a protective layer and Ultra Thin Glass. Samsung says the film helps the display withstand pressure; that description applies to those models and should not be assumed to describe every foldable. Google says the Pixel Fold’s flexible screen is softer than a traditional phone screen. Crumbs, fingernails and sharp objects can damage it, and particles can also pose a risk when trapped in the hinge as the phone closes. Google’s Pixel Fold safety guide.

Samsung UK’s guidance page was updated on 22 October 2024. Its touch-setting advice is specific to Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip phones: if the inner film has already been removed, Samsung says to turn off Touch sensitivity under Settings > Display, because the sensitivity setting is intended for use with the film. This does not make removing the film advisable; ask Samsung about replacement.

What to do if the film bubbles, lifts or gets damaged
- Do not peel or replace it yourself based on advice for another foldable. Check support instructions for your exact model and region.
- Contact the maker or its authorized service provider. Samsung directs Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip owners to a service centre; Motorola recommends authorized help if a Razr protector bubbles, warps or separates.
- Check eligibility before assuming replacement is free. Samsung Singapore says the Fold4 and Flip4 film is a consumable that can develop scratches, bubbles or lifting with normal wear. It says Samsung Care+ members may qualify for a one-time complimentary replacement, but eligibility depends on the model, plan and region. - For a Pixel Fold, ask Google support about current service options. Google’s cited safety instructions warn against removing the factory film and using third-party film, but do not establish a specific replacement offer.
How to protect the inner screen in daily use
- Keep crumbs, grit, sand, dirt, fingernails and sharp objects away from the flexible display.
- Before closing the phone, check that the screen and hinge are clear of debris. Google specifically warns about particles on the display or in the hinge.
- Do not press hard on the crease or close the phone on an object such as a card, key or sand. Samsung warns against pressure on the fold area and folding with foreign objects inside.
- If the factory film begins lifting, bubbling or warping, seek model-specific service advice instead of pulling at it or applying another film.
What is known—and what is not
The cited manufacturer materials give qualitative warnings, not a measured percentage chance of damage or a lifespan estimate for phones used without the film. They do not establish that every foldable behaves the same way or that a particular aftermarket film is approved across models. Follow the instructions for your exact device rather than treating an online replacement listing as a universal fix.
