This is the strongest PC-like use case documented for current consoles. Xbox Series S and X include Microsoft Edge, and Microsoft explains how to browse with a connected keyboard and mouse. On PS5, Sony documents keyboard and mouse input for text entry and selecting items on screen.

Playing games with a keyboard and mouse
Console-level support does not guarantee game-level support. A keyboard or mouse may work in the console interface while a particular game accepts only a controller. The game publisher and the version of the game determine whether those inputs are available.
Running Windows software and doing desktop work
A console browser is not the same thing as Windows. The official materials cited here do not establish support for installing general Windows desktop applications, using a normal Windows file workflow or adding arbitrary browser extensions. Edge provides a browser, not a Windows desktop

Microsoft’s own description says: “With the keyboard, you can use shortcuts on your console, like any computer, and still have quick access to your favorite games.” Read that as a description of browser navigation and keyboard shortcuts, not as a claim that Xbox runs Windows or supports every desktop application. Basic setup for browsing
- Connect a compatible keyboard and mouse to the Xbox using the connection method supported by your devices.
- Open Microsoft Edge from the console’s apps or games area.
- Click or select a text field to confirm that keyboard input works, then use the mouse for pointer navigation where the page supports it.
- Try keyboard shortcuts in Edge if you prefer computer-style navigation; Microsoft specifically highlights shortcut use on Xbox.
The documentation confirms the browsing capability, but it does not establish a universal list of keyboard and mouse models. Check the exact console, device and connection method before buying an accessory.

What this is useful for
- Searching the web without reaching for an on-screen keyboard.
- Entering longer messages, passwords or search queries with physical keys.

Whether a particular website behaves well is a separate question. The official Xbox material confirms Edge and peripheral browsing, but it does not promise that every productivity site, web-based office tool, download workflow or extension will work like it does on a Windows PC.
What PS5 supports
USB and Bluetooth input
Sony documents both USB and Bluetooth keyboard and mouse setup for PS5. These devices can be used for text entry and for selecting items on screen. Sony also warns that not all devices work, so system-level support should be treated as compatibility-dependent rather than universal.
Use Sony’s current instructions, “How to use a keyboard and mouse on PS5 consoles,” when connecting a device. The page covers wired USB connections and Bluetooth pairing; follow the pairing prompts for your specific accessory and confirm that the console recognizes it before relying on it.

A keyboard that lets you type in a message or select an interface item is not proof that every game accepts keyboard and mouse controls. It also does not establish that PS5 provides a Windows-style desktop, supports ordinary Windows applications or offers the same browser workflow as Xbox Edge. Sony’s documented claim is about input-device setup and use on the console, with a compatibility warning.

Keyboard and mouse gaming: the game decides
When the goal is gaming rather than browsing, check the individual game’s input support. Console support merely makes the peripheral available to the system; the game must be programmed to recognize keyboard and mouse commands.
Local console games
Do not assume that a mouse and keyboard will work in every installed title. If the device works in the console interface but has no effect after a game starts, the most likely explanation is that the game does not support those inputs on that platform or in that mode. Look for the game’s own control settings or support documentation before troubleshooting the hardware.
Xbox Cloud Gaming is a separate case
Xbox Wire’s May 15, 2024 announcement describes mouse and keyboard support for Xbox Cloud Gaming in browsers and in the Xbox app on PC. The announcement directs players to games specifically designated as supporting those inputs. That cloud-gaming context should not be conflated with every locally installed Xbox game: a title can support mouse and keyboard in the cloud experience while another title, or another mode, does not.

Choose a console when your priority is gaming plus occasional browsing

If something does not work

- Typing works but the pointer does not: The page or interface may not expose pointer controls in that context. Test another screen before concluding that the hardware is defective.
- The interface works but the game ignores the keyboard: Check the game’s own support information. Input support is a title-level decision.
- A cloud game ignores the mouse and keyboard: Verify that the game is one of the titles designated for those inputs and that you are using the cloud context described in the Xbox announcement.
- A work website is incomplete or awkward: The cited documentation does not guarantee productivity-site compatibility, downloads, file workflows or extensions. Move that task to a Windows PC instead of treating the symptom as a hardware failure.
Is a keyboard-and-mouse combo worth adding?
For people who browse or type regularly on a compatible console, a basic USB keyboard and mouse combo is a practical optional accessory.
