Yes, you can use a Chromebook offline—but only for apps and files that support offline mode and were prepared before the connection disappeared. Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail, Keep, selected Drive files, downloaded books and videos, local files, photos, saved web pages, and some games can continue working. Websites that require a live server, unprepared cloud files, and unsupported apps will not work just because the Chromebook itself is powered on.
The practical rule is simple: while you still have internet, enable offline access, download or sync what you need, and verify the app’s offline indicator. When you reconnect, supported edits and queued email can synchronize.

What “offline” means on a Chromebook
A Chromebook’s offline capability is selective rather than universal. ChromeOS can run local applications and open files stored on the device without a network, while cloud services need a local copy and an offline-enabled app. A file visible in Google Drive is not automatically available without internet, and a web page that normally loads from a remote server will not become usable offline unless you saved it in advance.

A personal Chromebook may expose settings that a work or school administrator has disabled. Guest and Incognito sessions can prevent services from retaining the data needed for offline use. Storage is another constraint: downloaded media and synchronized files occupy local space, and a full drive can stop new content from being prepared or synced.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. Prepare your Chromebook before the connection fails
- Connect to the internet and sign in to the account you will use offline. Offline data is tied to the relevant profile, so preparing one account does not automatically prepare another.
- Turn on each service’s offline setting. Drive, Docs Editors, Gmail, and other apps have separate controls. Enabling Drive access alone does not configure Gmail or downloaded media.
- Download or mark the exact files and content you need. Selective preparation avoids filling the Chromebook with items you will not use.
- Look for an offline-ready checkmark or status indicator. Open a prepared file once while connected and confirm that it remains available after a short test with Wi-Fi turned off.
- Leave free storage. Offline copies, video downloads, Android apps, and browser data all use the device’s local storage.
- Use a normal browsing session, not Incognito or Guest, for services that require persistent offline data.
Do this preparation on the same Chromebook and profile that will travel with you. If the device is managed by an employer or school, an administrator may have to permit offline mail, Android apps, or Google Play first.
Can you use Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides offline?
Yes. Google says Docs, Sheets, and Slides can be viewed, created, and edited without a connection after offline mode is configured. Your edits remain on the Chromebook and synchronize to Google services when connectivity returns.
Requirements
- An initial internet connection to configure offline access.
- Chrome or Microsoft Edge in a regular, non-private browsing session.
- The Google Docs Offline Chrome extension.
- Enough available device storage for local copies.
- Offline access enabled in Drive or in the Docs, Sheets, or Slides settings.
Enable and verify offline editing
- While online, open Google Drive or a Docs, Sheets, or Slides app and open its settings.
- Enable the option for offline access, then allow the Google Docs Offline extension if prompted.
- For important work, open the file’s menu and mark that individual file as available offline.
- Check the file’s offline status indicator. Some recent files may be saved automatically when space permits, but automatic selection is not a guarantee for every document.
- Turn off Wi-Fi briefly and open the file. Create a small test edit, then reconnect and confirm that the change synchronizes.
If a large document fails to prepare or sync, free storage and try again. Also check that the browser is up to date, the Docs Offline extension is enabled, private browsing is off, and an administrator has not disabled offline access.
How Google Drive files work offline
Drive offline access is selective. On a Chromebook, you can mark individual Drive files and folders as available offline in the Files app. A checkmark indicates that the local copy is ready; edits made without internet sync when the Chromebook reconnects.

- Screen Size: 11.6"
Individual files and folders
- Open the Chromebook’s Files app while connected.
- Browse to the Google Drive section and select the file or folder you need.
- Use the file’s context menu to make it available offline.
- Wait for the checkmark or other ready status before disconnecting.
- After working offline, reconnect and allow synchronization to finish before shutting down or removing the local copy.
Google identifies Google Maps and Google Forms among file types that are not supported by this Chromebook Drive offline workflow. Do not assume that every item you can browse in Drive has an offline equivalent.
Chromebook Plus: syncing My Drive
Chromebook Plus devices offer an additional option to synchronize all files in My Drive from system settings, provided there is enough free device storage. Files show a checkmark after they have synced. This option applies to My Drive; it does not mean every item you can access through Drive, shared locations, or unsupported services is stored locally. Selective file preparation remains the safer choice when storage is limited.
Can you read and send Gmail offline?
Yes, Gmail Offline can read, search, and respond to messages that have been synchronized in advance. It does not provide a live mailbox: messages outside the selected sync period and new server-side changes are unavailable until you reconnect.

What happens to outgoing mail?
A reply or new message composed without a connection is placed in a new Outbox folder. It stays there until internet access returns, then sends automatically. Tell recipients to expect a delay; composing a message offline is not the same as delivering it immediately.
Google Keep and other everyday files
Google Keep can work offline after the Chromebook has been online and the app has had time to save its notes locally. Existing notes can be read and edited, and new notes can be written without a connection. Changes appear in Keep again after reconnection.
ChromeOS also supports several local tasks without any cloud service:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open, create, and edit compatible documents, spreadsheets, and presentations stored on the Chromebook.
- View and edit photos with the built-in photo editor.
- Read web pages that you previously saved as HTML files.
- Use Chrome Web Store apps marked “Runs offline.”
Local files are the most dependable offline material because they do not need to be downloaded from a remote account at the moment you open them. Nevertheless, check that the required application is installed and that the file format is supported before you leave coverage.

Books, movies, music, and games
Offline entertainment depends on the device, the app version, licensing, subscription, and any administrator restrictions. Download eligible content while connected and verify that the app lists it as available offline.
Books
Google Play Books supports downloading eligible ebooks for offline reading. The download must finish before you disconnect, and a work or school profile may not have Google Play access.
Movies and television
Google describes downloading eligible movies or TV episodes before viewing them offline. Eligibility and download controls are determined by the service and title, so check the individual item’s download option instead of assuming that all streaming content can be stored.

Google explicitly says YouTube Music for Chromebook does not support offline playback. For offline music, Google’s Chromebook guidance points to the YouTube Music Android app and a YouTube Premium subscription: install the Android app where permitted, subscribe if required, and download the music in advance. A browser tab left open while online will not provide offline playback later.

Games and apps
Search the Chrome Web Store using the “Runs offline” filter before relying on a game or utility. Compatible Chromebooks may also have offline-capable games in Google Play. Android app availability is not universal: work or school devices may block the Play Store or Android downloads, and individual apps can still require a server connection even after installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What will not work without internet
- Websites and web apps that must contact a live server for every page, account action, or calculation.
- Drive content that was not marked or synchronized for offline use.
- Unsupported Drive file types, including the Google Maps and Google Forms cases identified in Google’s Chromebook guidance.
- Gmail messages outside the period you chose to sync.
- Streaming media that was not downloaded and services whose app does not provide an offline mode.
- Apps or Play Store features blocked by an administrator.
- Any task that depends on immediate cloud collaboration, real-time notifications, or a server-side database.
These limits are functional, not a sign that the Chromebook is broken. Offline mode can preserve a prepared copy; it cannot recreate a service that has no local data or offline implementation.
Offline approaches compared
| Approach | What is stored locally | Best use | Key constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual Drive selection | Chosen files or folders | Keeping a small working set available | Every required item must be selected and show a checkmark |
| Chromebook Plus My Drive sync | All files in My Drive, subject to storage | Large, regularly used My Drive libraries | Requires a Chromebook Plus device and sufficient free space; does not cover every Drive location |
| Browser-based offline apps | Local copies of Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Keep data | Editing cloud documents or handling prepared mail | Needs initial setup, supported browser conditions, and a persistent user profile |
| Downloaded media or Android apps | Books, eligible video, music downloads, or app data | Travel entertainment and selected utilities | Depends on title, app, subscription, device support, and administrator policy |
| Files already on the Chromebook | Local documents, photos, and saved HTML pages | Tasks that must work with no cloud account | Requires compatible local software and enough storage |
Troubleshoot a Chromebook that is not working offline
A file opens online but not offline
Reconnect, open the file in the correct profile, and explicitly mark it available offline. Wait for the checkmark, then test again with Wi-Fi disabled. If it still fails, confirm that the file type is supported and that local storage is not full.
Docs, Sheets, or Slides will not save offline
Check the browser version, confirm you are not in private browsing, and make sure the Google Docs Offline extension is installed and enabled. Free storage, retry the setup, and verify that an administrator has not turned off offline access. Very large files may fail to synchronize offline even when smaller files work.
Gmail shows no messages or cannot queue a reply
Use the regular Gmail site rather than Incognito, confirm that offline mail was enabled while connected, and check that the selected sync period includes the messages you need. A queued message should appear in Outbox; it cannot send until connectivity returns.
Downloaded apps or media are unavailable
Check that the download completed, the title is eligible for offline use, and you are signed into the same account. On managed devices, ask the administrator whether Play Store or Android access is restricted. For music, remember that the Chromebook version of YouTube Music does not provide offline playback.
A reliable travel checklist
- Open every document, spreadsheet, presentation, note, and email folder you expect to use.
- Confirm Drive checkmarks and app-specific offline indicators.
- Download books, eligible videos, music through a supported Android app, and offline-capable games.
- Copy critical documents and photos into local storage as a second path.
- Test with Wi-Fi turned off and airplane mode enabled, then restore the connection.
- Leave enough free storage for new notes, edits, and queued mail.
- After reconnecting, keep the Chromebook online until Drive edits and Gmail Outbox messages have synchronized.
A Chromebook is therefore a practical offline computer for prepared work, local files, and selected downloads—not a full replacement for internet-dependent services. The quality of the offline experience comes from preparation: enable the right setting, store the right content, and verify it before you go offline.
