Yes. An RTX 5090 can use its included power adapter fed by PCIe 8-pin cables, or a compatible native PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable rated for at least 600 W. The right connector count depends on the exact card and its instructions: NVIDIA’s Founders Edition guide calls for at least four independent 8-pin cables, while NVIDIA’s product page also describes a three-input configuration.

Two supported ways to power an RTX 5090

Connection What to use What to verify
Included adapter The adapter supplied for the exact card, connected to the required PCIe 8-pin leads. Follow the card’s own manual for the number of inputs and use separate PSU cables for them.
Native 16-pin cable A PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable rated for at least 600 W. Confirm that the PSU supports it and that the cable is approved for the exact PSU model.

NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5090 User Guide Rev. 2 lists both arrangements. For the Founders Edition, it also says to use only the included NVIDIA adapter.

How many 8-pin cables does the adapter need?

Use the count specified for your exact RTX 5090 and adapter; do not assume that every 5090 uses the same count. NVIDIA’s Founders Edition guide instructs users to connect at least four independent dedicated PCIe 8-pin cables to the adapter. NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 product page lists four cables in its adapter configuration but also says in a later installation section that the card supports three or four PCIe 8-pin cables. Those statements are not identical, so use the included manual for your card as the deciding instruction.

Use separate PSU leads, not a daisy-chain as a substitute

Connect an independent PCIe cable from the PSU for each adapter input required by your card’s instructions. ASUS’s graphics-card installation guidance likewise says to use a separate PSU cable for each graphics-card or adapter power connector, and warns against connecting both ends of a PCIe splitter cable at once because it may cause damage.

Can you use a 12V-2×6 cable that came with your PSU?

Potentially, yes: NVIDIA specifies a native PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable rated at least 600 W as an alternative to the adapter. But a matching-looking connector is not enough. Use only a cable supplied with, or specifically approved for, your exact PSU model. ASUS explains in its modular PSU cable guide that pinouts can differ between PSU brands and models; mixing modular cables can damage hardware.

What PSU wattage should you have?

NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 guide specifies a 1000 W minimum system power supply. That is NVIDIA’s stated minimum for the system, not a universal recommendation for every component combination. ASUS’s recommended PSU table varies by GPU power row and CPU class:

Before powering on

  • Identify the exact RTX 5090 model and use its included adapter and instructions where required.
  • For an adapter, connect the number of independent PSU PCIe 8-pin cables specified by that card’s manual.
  • For a native 16-pin connection, verify the cable’s 600 W-or-greater rating and compatibility with the exact PSU model.
  • Route the cable so the connector can be fully seated without the case or cable path obstructing the connection. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal clearance measurement.
