Yes—but only on specific PS5 model groups. Sony supports its separately sold CFI-ZDD1-series disc drive on consoles in the CFI-2000 model group and on consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition has no official drive-upgrade path: Sony says that model group does not support disc-based games or media.
Before buying anything, identify your console’s model group. The drive is not included with a Digital Edition console, and setup requires an internet connection so the drive can be paired with the console. Sony’s compatibility and installation guidance is summarized in the sections below, with links to its disc and USB playback support page and PS5 disc-drive setup instructions.

The short answer: model number matters
A PS5 described as “Digital Edition” is not automatically upgradeable. The deciding factor is the console’s model group, not simply whether the box says Digital Edition.

- CFI-7000: Sony lists this model group as compatible with the drive. Compatibility is confirmed for the group, but it should not be labeled a Digital Edition without checking the specific console.
- CFI-1000 Digital Edition: not compatible with this official add-on. Sony says this model group does not support disc-based games or media.
The practical rule is simple: identify the model group first, then buy the drive only if the group is CFI-2000 or CFI-7000.

Which PS5 Digital Edition models support a disc drive?
| Console model group | Official add-on compatibility | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| CFI-1000 Digital Edition | No. Sony states that it does not support disc-based games or media. | There is no official CFI-ZDD1 installation route for this model group. Do not buy the add-on expecting it to fit or pair. |
| CFI-2000 Digital Edition (Slim) | Yes, with the separately sold CFI-ZDD1-series disc drive. | Confirm the model group, obtain the correct drive for your region, and follow Sony’s setup sequence. |
| CFI-7000 | Yes. Sony lists the group as compatible with the CFI-ZDD1-series drive. | Verify the exact model information before purchase. Do not assume every CFI-7000 console is a Digital Edition. |
Sony’s support documentation is the authority for these model-group distinctions. Its wording establishes compatibility and separate sale, but it does not establish a universal price, stock level, or country-by-country availability. Those details can change, so check the current listing where you intend to buy after confirming the model.
What the CFI-ZDD1-series drive upgrade does
The add-on gives a compatible console an official way to use disc-based games and disc media. That is the relevant distinction between a compatible Digital Edition and the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition: the former can be paired with the supported drive, while Sony says the latter does not support disc-based games or media.
The drive is a separate product. A Digital Edition console does not include it by default, so a console listing that says “Digital Edition” should not be read as including a drive unless the seller explicitly lists one. Treat the model check and the drive purchase as two separate decisions.

How to check your console before buying
1. Find the model information
Use the model number shown on the console or its original documentation and determine the model group: CFI-1000, CFI-2000, or CFI-7000. The group designation is the critical part; do not rely only on a retailer’s title, a color name, or the word “Slim.”
2. Match the group to Sony’s compatibility list
CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 are the groups Sony lists as compatible with the CFI-ZDD1-series drive. CFI-1000 Digital Edition is the excluded group. If a listing, used-console advertisement, or product photo does not make the model group clear, pause the purchase and obtain that information first.
3. Confirm the exact drive listing
Sony’s support material identifies the official add-on as the CFI-ZDD1 series. Verify that the product description uses that identifier and that the listing is intended for your market. The available evidence does not establish a single worldwide price or inventory status, so avoid treating a historical price or an out-of-region listing as a current guarantee.

What you need for the installation
- A compatible CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 console.
- The separately sold CFI-ZDD1-series disc drive.
- Access to the internet during setup, because the drive and console must be paired.
- A safe place to power down and handle the console panels.
- The original cover and feet removed during installation; Sony says to retain them for later use if the console is operated without the drive attached.
The internet requirement is specifically part of pairing. Plan to complete setup somewhere the console can reach the internet rather than assuming the drive can be installed and used entirely offline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to install the drive on a compatible PS5
Sony’s instructions cover the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups. Follow the instructions for your exact console rather than forcing a panel or using a procedure intended for another model.
- Shut down the PS5 completely. Do not begin while the console is running or in a low-power state.
- Disconnect the power cable and other cables. The console should be unplugged before you remove panels or attach the drive.
- Allow the console to cool. Sony directs users to wait before handling the covers and drive area.
- Remove the designated cover and feet. The correct pieces and removal points depend on the console group. Use Sony’s model-specific diagrams and sequence rather than applying pressure to an unmarked panel.
- Attach the CFI-ZDD1-series drive. Seat it as shown in Sony’s setup instructions. If it does not align naturally, stop and recheck the model-specific steps; do not force the mechanism.
- Reconnect the console and power it on. Complete the on-screen or instructed pairing process while the console has internet access.
- Keep the removed parts. Store the original cover and feet safely. Sony says they are needed if you later use the console without the drive attached.
The detailed official procedure, including the panel and foot steps for the supported groups, is available in Sony’s PS5 disc-drive setup guide.
Why pairing needs an internet connection
The drive is not simply a mechanical accessory that can be attached and assumed to work. Sony requires an internet connection to pair the drive with the console during setup. This means a compatible model can still fail to complete installation if it is configured in a location without internet access.
If you are preparing the console for someone else, complete or plan the pairing step before moving it to an offline location. The requirement applies to setup; the support material does not promise that every later disc operation will work without an internet connection, so do not interpret the pairing instruction as an unrestricted offline-use guarantee.

- Installation Instructions: No soldering or mating required. Need to replace the motherboard of the old optical drive with the new replacement optical drive, it is recommended to search for replacement tutorials on YouTube
- Note: Please check The model of your console before purchasing. The optical drive modules replacement of CFI‑1000, CFI‑1100, and CFI‑1200 are different

Do not buy the CFI-ZDD1 drive hoping that a firmware update, a different cover, or an adapter will turn a CFI-1000 Digital Edition into a disc-capable console. The supported model groups are CFI-2000 and CFI-7000. If disc playback is essential and your console is CFI-1000 Digital Edition, compare the cost and practicality of obtaining a console from a supported group instead of treating the unsupported model as upgradeable.
Common buying mistakes
Assuming every Digital Edition is the same
The phrase “Digital Edition” spans different generations. A CFI-2000 Digital Edition can accept the official drive, while the CFI-1000 Digital Edition cannot. Always use the model group as the deciding check.
Thinking the drive is included
The CFI-ZDD1-series drive is sold separately. Confirm whether a bundle includes the drive rather than inferring it from a photograph or a generic “PS5” description.
Buying before checking regional availability
Sony’s documentation establishes the product identifier and compatibility, not current stock or pricing in every country. Check the listing available to you and verify that it is the CFI-ZDD1 series before paying.
Discarding the original parts
The cover and feet removed for installation are not waste. Sony says they are required if the console is used without the drive later, so label and store them with the console accessories.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting a failed installation
The drive does not pair
First verify that the console is in the CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 group and that it is connected to the internet. If the console is CFI-1000 Digital Edition, pairing is not an installation problem; the model is outside the supported path.

The panels or feet do not come off
Stop applying force and reopen Sony’s setup guide for the exact model group. The official instructions distinguish the designated cover and feet, and the console should be powered off, unplugged, and cool before handling.
The drive will not seat correctly
Check that you have the CFI-ZDD1-series drive and are following the instructions for the correct group. Misalignment is a reason to stop and recheck the procedure, not to press harder or modify the cover.
You no longer have the removed cover or feet
The installation may still be possible, but you have lost the parts Sony says are needed to use the console without the drive attached. Contact the seller or an official support channel for replacement-part options rather than improvising a substitute.
How to make the purchase decision
- Identify the model group. If it is CFI-1000 Digital Edition, stop: this official upgrade does not apply.
- For CFI-2000 or CFI-7000, verify the drive identifier. Look for the CFI-ZDD1 series in the listing.
- Check the seller’s region and current availability. Compatibility does not guarantee that stock or pricing is the same everywhere.
- Plan the setup conditions. You need power-down access, time for the console to cool, the correct cover and feet procedure, and internet access for pairing.
- Preserve the removed parts. Keep them with the console after installation.
Where to verify the official requirements
For disc and media compatibility language, consult PlayStation Support’s disc and USB-drive page. For the physical installation sequence and pairing requirement, use PlayStation Support’s PS5 disc-drive setup page. These pages are the appropriate references when Sony changes model support, instructions, or regional product information.
Bottom line
You can upgrade a PS5 Digital Edition to play disc games only when it belongs to the CFI-2000 model group. Sony also lists CFI-7000 consoles as compatible with the separately sold CFI-ZDD1-series drive. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition is not upgradeable through this official drive, and every supported installation requires internet pairing plus careful removal and retention of the console’s cover and feet.
