Yes, but “safe” has two different meanings. Sony’s documented Safe Mode procedures can update, reset, or reinstall a PS5 without requiring unofficial files. However, installing an official firmware version can end compatibility with a jailbreak that depends on the console’s current version. A reset also cannot be treated as a guaranteed unban or proof that every historical account or service record has been removed. If preserving the jailbreak matters, stop before updating and verify a recovery path for your exact PS5 model and firmware; otherwise, use only Sony’s official update file and Safe Mode choices.
What can go wrong on a jailbroken PS5?
A jailbroken PS5 is tied to a particular system-software environment. The exploit may work only on certain firmware builds, while an official update can move the console to a build for which the exploit no longer works. That is a technical consequence of version-specific jailbreaks, not a risk Sony promises to prevent.

The important distinction is between data safety and jailbreak preservation. Sony supports updating or reinstalling system software through Safe Mode, but its public recovery instructions do not provide a jailbreak-preserving downgrade and do not promise that unofficial modifications will survive. Treat a firmware change as effectively irreversible unless you have independently confirmed a supported recovery route for the exact model and version.

- An official update may remove access to your current jailbreak.
- A factory reset can erase local users, saves, games and captures, depending on the option selected.
- A reinstall replaces the system software and is more destructive than a settings reset.
- Neither reset option is a documented method for removing a PlayStation Network or console enforcement action.
Which Safe Mode option should you choose?
Safe Mode presents separate operations. They are not interchangeable, and choosing the wrong one can erase data or change firmware when you only intended to repair settings.

The practical rule is simple: use Restore Default Settings for a settings problem when you need to preserve local content; use Reset PS5 when you want to erase users and data but are not deliberately replacing the system software; and use Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) only for a serious software-recovery case or a complete clean installation.
Will updating remove the PS5 jailbreak?
It can. A jailbreak normally depends on vulnerabilities present in specific firmware versions. If Sony’s update installs a version that closes the relevant vulnerability or changes the software environment, the existing exploit may stop working. Sony does not guarantee exploit compatibility, and its recovery documentation does not describe an official downgrade that preserves a jailbreak.

- Return to an officially supported console: use Sony’s update or reinstall process, accepting that the jailbreak may no longer function.
- Fix settings without changing firmware: try Restore Default Settings first, after making a backup that you can actually access.
Do not assume that a factory reset restores an exploit. Resetting user data and changing system software are different operations; a reset may leave the same firmware in place, while a reinstall removes and replaces the software.

Back up before using any destructive option
Some Safe Mode choices cause data loss. Back up saves and other content you can still access before proceeding, and confirm that the backup is usable rather than merely present. A reset can remove local accounts, installed games, captures and saves that have not been copied elsewhere.
- Copy or synchronize saves using a method available to your console and account.
- Move screenshots and video clips off the console if they matter to you.
- Record which users, games and settings will need to be restored.
- Check that the console has stable power; interruption during software installation can leave recovery work unfinished.
- If preserving the jailbreak is important, note the current system-software version before changing anything.
Backups protect personal content; they do not preserve jailbreak compatibility. A backup cannot turn a newly installed, incompatible firmware version back into the old one.
How to update or reinstall with Sony’s official USB method
Use only the official update or reinstallation file supplied by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Sony explicitly warns not to download or install an update using data other than its official update file. Do not substitute an exploit payload, modified PUP or unofficial “downgrade” package.
- Choose the operation first. Select Update System Software for a normal official update, or reserve Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) for a complete clean reinstall. The reinstall option deletes local data.
- Prepare a USB drive. Format the drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting erases the drive, so copy off anything you need before doing this.
- Create the required folders. At the root of the USB drive, create a folder named
PS5, then anUPDATEfolder inside it. The path must bePS5/UPDATE. - Place the file correctly. Save Sony’s file in the
UPDATEfolder and name the reinstallation file exactlyPS5UPDATE.PUP. Avoid adding a second extension such as.PUP.pup. - Power the console off completely. Do not begin with the PS5 in Rest Mode. Once it is off, press and hold the power button and release it after the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller. Plug the controller into the PS5 with a USB cable and press the PS button when Safe Mode requests it.
- Select the matching Safe Mode command. Choose Update System Software for an update, or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) for the full removal and replacement of system software.
- Let the process finish. Do not disconnect power or the USB drive while the console is reading or installing the file. Follow the on-screen prompts.
Sony’s warning for a reinstall is unambiguous: “Reinstalling your console’s system software deletes all data on your console.” Sony also describes reinstalling as a last troubleshooting step. If the official process fails, the documented escalation is PlayStation Repairs rather than an unofficial firmware package.

What happens to games, saves and captures?
Restore Default Settings
This option restores factory settings without deleting games, applications, screenshots, video clips or saved data stored on the console. It is the least destructive choice when the problem is configuration-related and you do not need a firmware change.
Reset PS5
This option deletes all user data and returns the console to its original state. Treat local saves, captures, installed games and user profiles as disposable unless they have already been backed up.
Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)
This option performs the same broad data wipe while also removing the existing PS5 system software before installing the recovery file. It is not a stronger version of Restore Default Settings; it is a complete software replacement and should be selected only when that consequence is intended.
Can a reset unban the account or console?
No supported Sony guidance reviewed for these recovery operations promises that a reset removes an account ban, console enforcement action, service flag or every historical record associated with the system. A reset changes local data and, in the reinstall case, system software; it is not documented as an appeal or unban mechanism.

Do not advertise a reinstall to yourself as a clean slate for online enforcement. If access has been restricted, use the applicable official account or PlayStation support process. Keep the firmware decision separate from the enforcement question: reinstalling may help repair corrupted software, but it does not establish that an account or console is eligible to return to online services.
Jailbreak-specific mistakes to avoid
- Updating before checking the firmware. Once an official update closes the exploit’s compatibility window, a supported route back may not exist.
- Confusing reset with reinstall. A reset erases user data; the reinstall command also removes and replaces system software.
- Using a modified recovery file. Sony’s documented procedure calls for its official signed file, not an altered PUP or payload.
- Assuming “factory” means “unmodified.” A factory reset is not a documented guarantee that every unofficial change, log or service consequence has been erased.
- Skipping the backup. Safe Mode does not provide a recovery promise for data erased by a destructive command.
If the update or reinstall fails
The PS5 does not detect the USB file
- Confirm the drive is FAT32 or exFAT.
- Check that
PS5andUPDATEare uppercase folder names at the drive root. - Confirm the filename is exactly
PS5UPDATE.PUPand is insidePS5/UPDATE. - Re-download the official file rather than trying a modified or third-party package.
The controller does not work in Safe Mode
Connect it with a USB cable before pressing the PS button. A wireless connection alone may not be available in Safe Mode.
The installation stops or reports an error
Do not repeatedly experiment with unofficial files or downgrade claims. Verify the official file and folder structure, retry the documented process once the console is safely powered down, and contact PlayStation Repairs if the official procedure still fails.

Sony’s safety guidance says it may void warranty coverage if it reasonably believes the console was used in a way that violates system-software or game-software licence terms. That statement is separate from whether a particular reset succeeds. A successful reinstall does not retroactively guarantee warranty coverage, and a failed unofficial modification does not become supported merely because the console is later reset.
A safe decision sequence
- Decide whether retaining the current jailbreak is more important than installing current official software.
- Record the installed firmware and back up accessible saves and media.
- For a settings issue, try Restore Default Settings before any data-wiping command.
- For an official update, use Update System Software and accept the possibility of losing jailbreak compatibility.
- For a complete recovery, use only the official
PS5UPDATE.PUPon a FAT32 or exFAT USB drive atPS5/UPDATE, then choose Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). - If the official process fails, stop using unofficial recovery files and contact PlayStation Repairs.
The safest supported path is therefore conditional: preserve the current firmware if the jailbreak matters, or use Sony’s documented Safe Mode process if official software and a clean installation matter more. Neither path promises a downgrade, jailbreak retention or an unban.
