Usually, no. A PS5 update can move the console beyond the firmware range supported by the exploit that provides homebrew access. The currently reported Relapse jailbreak covers PS5 and PS5 Pro firmware 7.00 through 13.60, but not 14.00; that is a dated third-party report, not a Sony compatibility promise. Sony also warns that system updates can block unauthorized software and that reinstalling earlier system software is prohibited under its US license terms. Treat an update as a choice between preserving a firmware-dependent homebrew setup and returning to Sony’s current software and services path—not as a reversible maintenance step.
Why a PS5 update can remove homebrew access
Homebrew on a PS5 is not attached permanently to the hardware. It depends on a software exploit, the exact system-software version installed, and the payload or entry point being used. When Sony releases a newer system-software build, it can close the vulnerability that an exploit needs. An application or payload that worked before the update may then fail to start even though the console itself still boots normally.

This is why “jailbroken PS5” is not one universal condition. Different projects support different firmware boundaries, and a console inside one project’s range may still be incompatible with a particular payload. The PS5CEMU-HAR HEN setup documentation describes multiple entry points and warns that its compatibility table is only a snapshot. The PS5Dev UMTX Jailbreak README likewise documents limitations for that specific exploit rather than promising support for every homebrew package.
The current reported Relapse boundary
A September 29, 2026 report from PSN.GG says the public Relapse jailbreak works on PS5 and PS5 Pro systems running firmware 7.00 through 13.60, and does not work on 14.00. The report describes that range as current at the time of publication, not as a permanent rule. It is community reporting, not technical compatibility information published by Sony. You can read the report at PSN.GG’s Relapse coverage.

| Firmware or condition | What the cited evidence says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 7.00–13.60 | Reported as covered by Relapse on PS5 and PS5 Pro | A dated third-party claim; it does not prove that every payload or homebrew application works. |
| 14.00 | Reported as not covered by Relapse | Updating to this version would move a console outside that report’s stated range. |
| Other firmware and other exploits | Support varies by project, entry point and payload | Check the documentation for the exact exploit in use immediately before making a change. |
The report also calls Relapse tethered: a reboot removes the active jailbreak state, so the exploit must be run again. It warns of instability and possible data loss. Those characteristics make an update decision more consequential, because you must distinguish between a temporary loss after reboot and a permanent loss of exploit compatibility after installing newer system software.
What Sony’s terms say about updates and downgrading
Sony’s US PlayStation 5 System Software Licence Agreement expressly anticipates updates that change security and software behavior. Section 3 states:
“Services may include the latest update or download of a new release of System Software containing security patches, new technology or revised settings and features that may prevent access to unauthorized or pirated content or prevent use of unauthorized hardware or software in connection with your PS5 system.”
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
The full US agreement is available at Sony’s PS5 System Software Licence Agreement. It also prohibits specified unauthorized or modified software and hardware uses and prohibits reinstalling an earlier system-software version, commonly called downgrading. That is a contractual restriction in the US terms, not a guarantee that every technical recovery path is impossible. Regional agreements can differ, so do not treat the US text as universal legal advice.

Sony’s support material separately warns that unofficial update data or methods can make a modified console operate improperly and may affect warranty or repair services. Installing an official update through Sony’s documented process does not preserve a jailbreak; it simply follows the official software path.
The practical trade-off: homebrew access or the current Sony path
There is no update setting that lets you take Sony’s newest firmware while freezing the security state that an exploit needs. Decide which outcome matters more before downloading an update.
| Priority | What keeping the console unchanged offers | What updating offers | Main cost or risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firmware-dependent homebrew | Preserves the possibility of using an exploit while the exact firmware remains supported. | None unless a later exploit eventually adds support. | A newer build may close the exploit, and compatibility can change without notice. |
| Current Sony software and services | You remain on an older, potentially unsupported system-software build. | Access to Sony’s current features, fixes and official update path. | The update may prevent unauthorized software or hardware from being used. |
| Stability and recovery | A tethered setup requires re-running the exploit after reboot and may be unstable. | Official software is the path Sony supports for normal operation. | The cited Relapse report mentions instability and possible data loss, while Sony warns modified systems may affect repair service. |
Neither priority is automatically correct for every owner. A console used mainly for online services, newly released games or current system features has a different risk tolerance from one kept offline for a specific homebrew project. The important point is that an update should be treated as a one-way decision for planning purposes.

Record the exact installed firmware
Write down the complete system-software version displayed in the PS5’s system-software information screen. “Jailbroken” is not enough information: a single point release can determine whether an exploit works. Also note whether the console is a standard PS5 or PS5 Pro, because a project may state support for one, both or neither.

Identify the exploit and payload you actually use
Do not rely on a video or forum post that names only a console model. Compatibility tables distinguish entry points, exploit chains and payloads. Confirm the project name, the documented firmware range and the date of the documentation. The HEN setup documentation at PS5CEMU-HAR and the limitations in the PS5Dev UMTX README illustrate why one project’s range cannot be generalized to another.
Check whether your setup is tethered
If the exploit is tethered, restarting or losing power means you must execute the entry process again. That is different from losing compatibility after an update. A tethered exploit can remain usable on the same firmware, while a patched firmware can prevent the entry point from working at all.
Separate documented facts from assumptions
- A listed firmware range is not proof that every homebrew title, emulator or payload runs on that version.
- A report that a jailbreak is public does not make it an official Sony feature or guarantee future support.
- An official update file can be genuine and still be the wrong choice for someone trying to retain homebrew access.
- Do not assume a later downgrade will rescue the setup; Sony’s US terms prohibit reinstalling earlier system software.
If you choose not to update
Keeping the current firmware is the only way to avoid deliberately moving outside a known exploit range. It does not guarantee that homebrew will work indefinitely: the project may remain unstable, payload support may differ, and a reboot may require the tethered entry process again. It also means accepting Sony’s warning that staying off current software can leave the console without newer security fixes, settings or features.

Use the project’s own documentation for any compatibility check, and verify it against the exact version recorded on your console. Do not install a file simply because its filename or version looks newer. If a source does not state support for your firmware and payload, treat compatibility as unknown rather than assumed.

If you choose to install an official update
Sony documents a USB procedure for a manual system-software update. This is the official path, but it is not a jailbreak-preservation method. Installing the update can move the console beyond the exploit boundary you are trying to retain.
Prepare the USB drive
- Use a USB storage device formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- At the top level of the drive, create a folder named
PS5. - Inside
PS5, create a folder namedUPDATE. - Save Sony’s official update file inside that folder with the exact filename
PS5UPDATE.PUP. - Ensure the drive has approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file, as specified by Sony.
Run the update from Safe Mode
- Connect the prepared USB drive to the PS5.
- Start the console in Safe Mode.
- Select Update System Software.
- Select Update from USB Storage Device and follow the on-screen prompts.
Sony’s complete instructions and warnings are on How to update system software on a PS5 console. Sony specifically warns against update data from other sources and methods outside its instructions. A modified console or unofficial update method might operate improperly and could affect warranty or repair services.
Understand what you are accepting
Before confirming, compare the update’s version with the exploit documentation you checked earlier. If the version is outside the documented range, assume that the homebrew entry point may stop working. Do not proceed on the theory that an official package can be rolled back later. Once installed, plan as though the newer firmware will remain in place.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon scenarios and the right interpretation
“My jailbreak disappeared after a restart.”
That behavior is consistent with the cited Relapse report’s description of a tethered jailbreak. A restart does not by itself prove that the firmware was patched. Check that the system-software version is unchanged, then consult the exploit’s current instructions. Avoid updating merely to make the jailbreak survive a reboot; an update can create the more serious compatibility loss you were trying to avoid.

“The console is on 13.60 and an update to 14.00 is offered.”
The September 29, 2026 Relapse report places 13.60 inside its stated range and 14.00 outside it. If retaining Relapse-based homebrew is your priority, installing 14.00 conflicts with that stated boundary. If current Sony features and services are more important, the trade-off is explicit: update through Sony’s official process and accept that the reported exploit may no longer run.
“A homebrew app is installed but will not launch.”
An installed file does not establish exploit compatibility. The entry point, payload and firmware all have to align. Check the project’s documentation for that particular payload rather than concluding that the entire console is permanently unusable or that a system update will fix it.
“I want to update with a file from a forum.”
Do not use unofficial update data. Sony warns that files and methods outside its instructions can cause improper operation and affect warranty or repair services. The only documented USB layout is a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted drive containing PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP, followed by the Safe Mode option described above.

A cautious decision sequence
- Record the exact firmware, console model and the exploit or payload currently used.
- Read the current compatibility notes for that specific project, including any warning that the table is a snapshot.
- Check whether the offered Sony update is inside or outside the documented range.
- Choose your priority: preserving firmware-dependent homebrew or using Sony’s current software and services.
- If you update, use only Sony’s documented file and USB procedure; do not expect a downgrade or a preserved jailbreak.
- Afterward, verify the installed system-software version and treat any homebrew result as dependent on the updated firmware’s documented support.
The evidence available as of October 13, 2026 supports a narrow conclusion: Relapse was reported for firmware 7.00–13.60 and not 14.00, while Sony’s own terms warn that updates can prevent unauthorized software and prohibit downgrading in the US agreement. Because exploit support is volatile and project-specific, there is no general “safe update” that preserves homebrew access across PS5 firmware versions.
