Under a strict no-cheat rule, no currently verified, repeatable home-console method unlocks the F-Zero GX golden cars through ordinary play. The historically legitimate options were Japan-only event distribution and transferring special data from an F-Zero AX arcade machine to a GX save on a memory card. The four-controller button sequences reported in October 2026 are built-in cheat/debug inputs, not normal progression, even though they use standard controllers instead of an Action Replay.
What the “golden cars” actually are
F-Zero GX does not treat the gold content as five ordinary, separately unlockable vehicles. It is a collection of gold body, cockpit and booster custom parts. Combining the appropriate parts creates five named machines:

The parts are not automatically assembled into a finished machine. Nintendo Wire’s October 12, 2026 report says the relevant input makes the parts appear in the F-Zero Shop, where you still have to spend tickets to purchase them. Owning a gold set therefore involves two separate actions: making the parts available and paying the in-game ticket cost.

Story Mode, Grand Prix completion and routine ticket earning are documented ways to build a normal parts collection, but they are not documented as a gold-part unlock. F-Zero Central describes the gold-colored pieces as “event-exclusive custom parts” and treats Action Replay as a separate unlock mechanism. Contemporary coverage likewise identifies the sets as prizes distributed through special events rather than rewards in the standard overseas progression path.

That distinction matters because a player can accumulate a large ticket balance without ever seeing a gold body, cockpit or booster in the shop. Tickets are the purchase currency; they are not proof that the event flag has been set. If the gold parts have not been made available by an event record, an AX transfer or a cheat/debug input, ordinary play does not cause them to appear.
The two historically legitimate ways to receive the gold data
Japan-only event distribution
Contemporary reports describe the gold sets as prizes from Japanese events. These distributions were not part of the normal progression supplied to players in overseas releases. In practical terms, a player who did not participate in the relevant Japanese event should not expect to recreate the award simply by clearing Story Mode or every Grand Prix cup.
The event route is also historical rather than a generally available modern service. The surviving reports establish that the events existed and that the sets were event-exclusive; they do not establish a current, repeatable home-console procedure for downloading those prizes today.

Transfer from F-Zero AX
The other legitimate route used the F-Zero AX arcade system. The Sega/Amusement Vision F-Zero AX manual explains that, with a Memory Card inserted and certain conditions satisfied, the arcade can download special F-ZERO AX data to the card. That downloaded data can then be used in F-Zero GX.
This was a hardware-and-arcade process, not a hidden GX campaign reward. It required all of the following:
- Access to a compatible F-Zero AX arcade machine.
- A GameCube Memory Card containing a GX save.
- The license-card process required by the arcade system.
- The ability to meet the AX machine’s stated conditions for downloading the special data.
A practical AX transfer therefore looks like this:
- Start with a Memory Card that has an F-Zero GX save. Keep the card in the condition required by the arcade instructions; do not assume an empty card will work.
- Use the arcade’s license-card process and play under the conditions specified by the AX system.
- When the machine offers the download, write the special AX data to the inserted Memory Card.
- Move that card to the GameCube running F-Zero GX and load the save that received the data.
- Check the F-Zero Shop. If the transfer was accepted, the special parts can become available, but the parts still function as shop items rather than a free, preassembled car.
The exact arcade conditions and license handling depend on the AX installation. A modern console owner cannot substitute a normal GX controller code for this transfer and still call the result an AX unlock.

The four-controller inputs reported in October 2026
Nintendo Wire reported five sequences on October 12, 2026. They are entered at the F-Zero Shop screen with four controllers connected and operated simultaneously. The report says they unlock the corresponding gold parts, not a completed machine, and that tickets remain necessary for the purchases.

These inputs answer a different question from “can I unlock them without cheats?” They are cheat/debug inputs embedded in the game’s software. The fact that they require no Action Replay, memory modification or external device does not make them ordinary progression. A code entered through four controllers is still a cheat for a strict ruleset.
The report also does not establish a current official support notice from Nintendo validating these sequences. Treat them as a reported, software-based shortcut rather than a documented replacement for the original event or AX distribution.

What to do if you are enforcing a no-cheat rule
If “no cheats” means no software codes or debug inputs
Reject the four-controller sequences. They are intentionally entered to trigger hidden content and therefore fall outside a strict no-cheat definition. Also reject Action Replay or any equivalent external code device. Under that rule, the only qualifying paths are the historical Japanese event or a genuine AX transfer.
If you have a compatible AX arcade opportunity
Use the arcade manual’s procedure rather than trying to reproduce an internet code. Confirm that the machine supports Memory Card downloads, bring a card with a GX save, follow the license-card instructions and verify the resulting save in GX. If the arcade cannot perform the download or lacks the required license-card infrastructure, there is no software setting in the home version that substitutes for it.
If you only have the home console
There is no currently verified, repeatable no-cheat home-console unlock documented for ordinary GX play. Continue earning tickets for other shop content, but do not expect Story chapters, Grand Prix victories or a full ticket balance to reveal the gold sets.

Common misunderstandings
“I have enough tickets, so why are the gold parts missing?”
Tickets pay for parts after they are available. They do not create the event or AX entitlement. A missing gold category indicates that the unlock flag or transferred data is absent, not that you need to grind a particular number of additional races.
“Does entering the sequence give me the whole car?”
No. The reported sequences expose the body, cockpit and booster components in the shop. You must buy the pieces and combine the matching set to make Thunderstorm, El Dorado, Chrono Symphony, Bahamut or Gladiator.
“Is a four-controller sequence really a cheat if no accessory is used?”
Yes, for a ruleset that bans cheats. The relevant distinction is what the input does: it activates hidden debug content outside the game’s normal reward path. The controller count changes the hardware setup, not the classification.
“Can a normal overseas copy receive the Japanese event prize?”
The available contemporary descriptions call the events Japan-only and not part of normal overseas progression. They do not document a current method for recreating the distribution on an ordinary overseas console.
Bottom line
Without cheats, do not expect F-Zero GX to unlock the golden cars through Story Mode, Grand Prix completion or ticket accumulation. The documented legitimate history is limited to Japanese event distribution and the F-Zero AX arcade-to-Memory-Card transfer. The October 2026 four-controller sequences are useful only if you accept a cheat/debug method; they reveal the five sets’ parts, and you still need tickets to buy them.
