T-Mobile’s current guidance treats a postpaid device-financing obligation separately from a past-due account balance. Ask T-Mobile to check the iPhone’s IMEI, remaining installments and account standing, then identify the specific condition blocking an unlock. Even after unlocking, the iPhone may not support another carrier’s network or all of its services.
Which balance is preventing the unlock?
There are two distinct issues to check: the phone’s unpaid installments and a past-due service-account balance. T-Mobile says it will not process an IMEI unlock when a consumer postpaid account has a past-due balance. Financing payoff status is a separate question; an unpaid installment plan may mean the device financing is not fulfilled for postpaid unlocking.

Ask T-Mobile which condition applies to your account and device. Do not assume that paying the service bill clears the phone financing, or that paying off the phone resolves a past-due account balance. T-Mobile’s unlocking support guidance explains its unlock policy; the applicable result for a former Sprint customer depends on the device and account records.
How to request an unlock from T-Mobile
- Find the iPhone’s IMEI. You can usually find it in Settings > General > About. Give the number to T-Mobile support so it can check the specific device.
- Ask support to check both the financing and account. Request the remaining device payoff amount, confirmation of any past-due service balance, and the exact eligibility requirement that remains unmet.
- Resolve the identified condition, if needed. Confirm with T-Mobile what payment or account action is required before paying or making a switch decision. Clearing one kind of balance does not necessarily satisfy other unlock requirements.
- Submit the unlock request and keep its reference. Ask support to confirm whether the request was submitted, and retain the case number and any explanation if it is denied or delayed.
The CTIA Consumer Code says participating carriers should unlock eligible devices, initiate an unlock request with the original equipment manufacturer when necessary, explain why a device is ineligible, or explain a reasonable delay within two business days. That is a response standard for eligible requests, not a promise that every device will be unlocked within two days. See the CTIA Consumer Code for Wireless Service.

What to know about a former Sprint iPhone
Sprint is now part of T-Mobile, but old Sprint-device instructions may not describe how a particular phone or account is handled today. T-Mobile’s legacy Sprint device unlock instructions note that certain GSM-capable devices sold by Sprint may have a Sprint SIM lock and distinguish international GSM use from domestic U.S. SIM use. Ask support to verify how that guidance applies to your exact iPhone and account rather than relying on a general instruction for all Sprint phones.
Will an unlocked Sprint iPhone work on another carrier?
Not necessarily. Unlocking removes software that blocks an attempt to activate a device on another carrier; it does not change the phone’s hardware or ensure the new network is compatible. The CTIA code cautions that an unlocked phone may not be technologically compatible with another carrier or may not support all services.

Before switching, give the destination carrier your exact iPhone model and IMEI and ask it to check compatibility, including the services you need for calling, messaging and data. A successful unlock by itself is not proof that those services will work on the new network.
Will a carrier switch offer pay off the Sprint balance?
Do not assume it will. T-Mobile’s Family Freedom offer page describes conditional reimbursement, not an automatic payoff. Its terms require an eligible postpaid port-in, trade-in of the financed phone, a new financed phone, documentation and a minimum payment-plan history. The listed eligible carriers do not include Sprint, so confirm current eligibility and written terms before relying on reimbursement.

Questions to ask before paying or switching
- Is the amount I owe for device installments, past-due service, or both?
- What exact unlock requirement is preventing this iPhone from being unlocked?
- What payoff or account action is required, and will it satisfy that specific requirement?
- Has T-Mobile checked this iPhone’s IMEI and confirmed how its former Sprint status affects the request?
- Has the carrier I want to use confirmed compatibility for this exact model and IMEI?
- If I am counting on reimbursement, do the current written terms include my carrier and meet my trade-in, financing and payment-history situation?
