Can you trust AI for election advice? Common questions answered

Do not treat a general-purpose AI chatbot as an election authority. It may give a fluent answer that is outdated, jurisdictionally wrong or simply fabricated. For registration, eligibility, deadlines, polling places, identification and voting methods, use the official election office responsible for your location and the specific election.

AI can still help you formulate questions or summarize material you have already verified. It cannot replace checking the original government notice, source document or full recording. Political claims and AI-generated images, audio and video require a different verification process.

What “trust” should mean in an election context

Election advice is not one category. A date, polling address or identification rule is a procedural fact. A statement about a candidate’s record is a political claim. A realistic video may be genuine, edited or entirely synthetic. The right source and test differ for each.

Use an AI answer as an unverified lead, never as the final authority. A chatbot does not automatically know which election you mean, whether a rule changed yesterday, or whether a local exception applies. Even when it cites a source, open that source yourself and check that it actually supports the answer.

What testing has found about chatbot election answers

The 2024 workshop result

An Associated Press report on a January 2024 workshop described election officials and AI researchers asking five models—GPT-4, Llama 2, Gemini, Claude and Mixtral—basic democracy questions through a custom tool. All five failed to some degree. More than half of the responses were rated inaccurate and 40% were categorized as harmful. Examples included a wrong answer about same-day registration in Nevada and an incorrect Philadelphia ZIP-code response. Read the full account at Associated Press.

Philadelphia city commissioner Seth Bluestein told the AP, “The chatbots are not ready for primetime when it comes to giving important, nuanced information about elections.” Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar said, “It scared me, more than anything, because the information provided was wrong.” These statements describe that workshop’s results, not a permanent ranking of every current model.

Why the result is a warning, not a universal accuracy rate

The workshop was a bounded test with particular model versions, prompts and an interface. Models, retrieval systems, election rules and product safeguards change. The figures therefore demonstrate a failure mode: plausible answers can be wrong on consequential local details. They do not prove that every answer is false, nor establish a current error percentage for all consumer chatbots.

Evidence What it measured What it does not prove
AP report, February 2024 Evaluators’ ratings of answers from five models in a specific workshop; more than half inaccurate and 40% harmful. A universal failure rate or a current ranking of every AI service.
Linegar, Sinclair, van der Linden and Alvarez preprint, 24 October 2024 A preregistered two-wave study of 4,293 U.S. registered voters testing an AI-assisted prebunking intervention. That asking a general chatbot for personal voting instructions is reliable.

Questions you should never settle with a chatbot

“When and where do I vote?”

Go directly to the election authority for your jurisdiction. Confirm the exact election, date and address on the authority’s current website or notice. Do not rely on a generated summary for a registration deadline, polling location, early-voting period, mail-ballot rule, eligibility decision or identification requirement.

In the United States, the U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s AI resource warns that generated text, images, video and audio can imitate election officials or official information sources. It directs voters toward verifiable information and provides practical material for election offices. Local and state election offices remain the source for the rule that applies to you.

In the United Kingdom, the Electoral Commission identifies false claims about polling-station procedures, voter ID, registration or voting dates and deadlines, and eligibility as election-process misinformation. Its guidance explains how it may respond to those process claims; see its voter guidance.

“Am I eligible?”

Eligibility can depend on nationality, age, residence, registration status, the contest and local exceptions. A chatbot cannot make a binding determination. Use the responsible election office’s eligibility checker or contact channel, and keep any confirmation or reference number it provides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“What identification or voting method is required?”

Rules may differ between in-person, early, postal and absentee voting, and can change between elections. Read the current official instructions for your district. If an AI answer conflicts with an election notice, follow the notice and ask the election office to resolve the discrepancy.

How to check a political claim

Campaign claims are not the same as administrative instructions. The UK Electoral Commission states, “We do not regulate the content of campaign material.” It cannot verify or correct ordinary campaign claims. Instead, apply a source-and-evidence test.

1. Locate the original statement

Find the full speech, interview, document, dataset or legislative text rather than a screenshot or AI paraphrase. Record who made the claim, where it was published and its date. A clipped video or quote may omit a qualification that changes the meaning.

2. Identify the claim type

Separate a checkable factual assertion from a prediction, value judgment or opinion. “The law changed on Tuesday” can be checked against an official record. “This plan is best” requires assumptions and cannot be settled by a database lookup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Compare primary records and independent checks

Check government statistics, court records, budgets, voting records or the complete recording where relevant. Then consult reputable independent fact-checkers that explain their evidence and corrections. Do not count several articles repeating the same unattributed claim as independent corroboration.

4. Examine incentives and missing context

The Electoral Commission advises considering the source, author, incentives and whether material oversimplifies a complex issue. Ask what a campaign, influencer, outlet or anonymous account gains if you accept the claim. Look for dates, geographic scope, denominators and exceptions that a short AI answer may omit.

How to evaluate an AI-generated image, voice note or video

Assume “unverified,” not automatically true or false

UK government security guidance lists generated text, images, deepfake video and fake audio as possible disinformation formats and was updated on 30 April 2025. See the guidance. A convincing face or voice is not authentication, but an “AI-generated” label alone does not prove that a claim is false.

Check provenance and corroboration

  • Find the earliest available upload and preserve its URL, timestamp and surrounding text.
  • Look for the complete event, transcript, livestream or photographs from a reliable primary source.
  • Compare independent recordings, reputable reporting and official statements.
  • Inspect whether cuts, mismatched shadows, lip movement, room acoustics or metadata indicate editing, while treating those clues as leads rather than proof.

The cited authorities do not establish a consumer detector that definitively identifies every deepfake. A detector result should therefore trigger more checking, not end it.

What election authorities can and cannot do

United Kingdom

The Electoral Commission says it will seek to correct or respond to false information about voting or election processes, including polling procedures, ID, dates, deadlines and eligibility. It also says it does not regulate campaign-material content and cannot verify or correct campaign claims. Those are different remits, so a response from the Commission should not be read as an endorsement or rejection of every political assertion.

United States

The U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s resource page explains how AI may imitate election officials and points voters to verifiable information. The Federal Election Commission reported that on 19 September 2024 it voted not to open a rulemaking on AI in campaign advertisements and adopted an interpretive rule explaining that existing fraudulent-misrepresentation provisions apply regardless of technology. The FEC says applications are considered case by case; the update is not a comprehensive federal ban on deceptive AI or a general test for campaign truth. Read the FEC notice.

Elsewhere

The examples above are UK and U.S. guidance, not a worldwide rulebook. In another country, identify the statutory election management body for your contest and use its current voter instructions. A chatbot trained mainly on foreign rules is especially likely to misapply them.

A practical verification workflow

  1. Classify the question. Label it as a process fact, political claim, media-authenticity question or opinion.
  2. Set the jurisdiction and election. Write down the country, state or region, contest and election date before searching.
  3. Open the responsible authority. Use the official election office for registration, deadlines, locations, ID and voting methods. Navigate from the authority’s own domain rather than an AI-provided link.
  4. Check the page’s currency. Confirm publication or update date, election name, locality and any temporary instructions.
  5. Trace claims to originals. For political content, obtain the full statement, source document, data or recording.
  6. Corroborate independently. Compare primary records with more than one reputable, genuinely independent source.
  7. Document uncertainty. If sources conflict, contact the election office or mark the claim unverified instead of choosing the most confident-sounding answer.

Can AI ever help protect voters?

Yes, but that is a narrower use than asking a chatbot for personal voting advice. A preregistered two-wave study of 4,293 U.S. registered voters, posted by Linegar, Sinclair, van der Linden and Alvarez on 24 October 2024, found that an AI-assisted prebunking intervention reduced belief in specific election myths, with effects lasting at least one week. The paper is a preprint at arXiv.

Prebunking gives people advance explanations of how a rumor works and why it is misleading. That result does not show that a general chatbot knows your polling place, that every AI intervention works, or that synthetic content changes election outcomes. It supports a limited preventive application under tested conditions.

Common situations and the safest response

A chatbot gives a polling address

Ignore the address until the official election office confirms it for your registration and election. Check for last-minute relocations and accessibility information on the official page.

A post says voting was extended

Find the election authority’s notice and the legal basis for the change. Do not infer that a campaign post or chatbot summary changes the deadline.

A candidate video looks authentic

Locate the original event or full recording, compare independent footage and check whether the candidate or a trusted outlet has confirmed it. Until then, describe it as unverified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two sources disagree

Compare authority, claim type, currency, specificity, traceability, corroboration, incentives and media provenance. The source responsible for administering the election outranks a campaign or anonymous account on procedural rules; none of those sources automatically settles a political opinion.

What the available evidence does not establish

  • There is no cited universal accuracy rate for today’s AI chatbots on election questions.
  • The AP workshop does not measure every model, product, prompt or election.
  • No cited method reliably detects every synthetic image, voice or video.
  • The prebunking preprint does not estimate AI’s causal effect on turnout, vote choice or election outcomes.
  • UK and U.S. guidance cannot be generalized to every country’s law or reporting route.

Those limits are a reason to match the verification method to the claim, not a reason to dismiss every use of AI. For a consequential voting decision, the final check belongs with the authority that administers the election and with original evidence for any political claim.
