Yes—if “original hardware” means a Game Boy Advance console. Nintendo’s documented cartridge method uses a Nintendo DS or DS Lite with a GBA cartridge slot to migrate eligible Pokémon from Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed or LeafGreen into Pokémon Platinum through Pal Park. You do not need a GBA console for that step.
However, Nintendo has not documented a direct way to read an original GBA cartridge save into Pokémon HOME. If you have no working system with a compatible GBA cartridge slot, the official route described by Nintendo does not provide a direct cartridge-to-HOME import.

What “without the original hardware” actually means
There are two different situations hidden in this question:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- No Game Boy Advance console, but you still have compatible hardware with a GBA slot: A Nintendo DS or DS Lite can play GBA games in single-player mode, so it can perform the cartridge step required by Pal Park.
- No device with a GBA cartridge slot at all: Nintendo’s documented process does not show a direct transfer from an original GBA Game Pak to Pokémon HOME.
A DS or DS Lite is therefore a substitute for the GBA console, not a complete replacement for every item in the transfer chain. You still need the original supported Pokémon cartridge, a compatible Generation IV game with Pal Park available, and whatever later games or services are required for your intended destination.
#1 Best Overall
- The DS Lite system is a region free device, it can plays all Nintendo DS Lite games and Gameboy Advance Games
Nintendo also notes that DS and DS Lite systems cannot play original Game Boy or Game Boy Color cartridges and do not have the cable port used for GBA multiplayer. That matters if “Game Boy Advance game” is being used loosely for an older Game Boy title, or if you expect a DS to replace link-cable functions.
The official cartridge route: GBA Game Pak to Pokémon Platinum
Nintendo’s Pokémon Platinum manual documents the legacy migration procedure. The eligible source Game Paks are:
- Pokémon Ruby
- Pokémon Sapphire
- Pokémon Emerald
- Pokémon FireRed
- Pokémon LeafGreen
The receiving game in this documented procedure is Pokémon Platinum. Platinum must have the National Pokédex; the Pal Park migration option is not available before that requirement is met.
At the hardware level, the Platinum DS Game Card goes into the DS Game Card slot while the supported Pokémon GBA cartridge goes into the system’s GBA cartridge slot. This is why a DS Lite is useful to someone who owns the cartridge but not a GBA console. Nintendo confirms that both Nintendo DS and DS Lite systems can play GBA games in single-player mode.
Pokémon that cannot be sent
Before starting, check the party and storage boxes in the GBA game. Nintendo’s manual excludes Pokémon that are:
- Holding Mail
- Currently knowing a hidden move
Remove Mail and replace any hidden move before attempting migration. The manual’s restriction applies to each Pokémon selected for Pal Park, not merely to the game as a whole.
The transfer is permanent
Pal Park is a one-way migration. Nintendo states that migrated Pokémon disappear from the original GBA Game Pak and cannot be returned to it. Make a deliberate backup decision before confirming: once the move is completed, the source cartridge no longer contains those Pokémon.
Step-by-step: using a DS or DS Lite instead of a GBA
- Confirm the source game. Use an original cartridge of Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed or LeafGreen. Other GBA titles are not listed as sources in the Pokémon Platinum procedure.
- Prepare the Pokémon. Remove Mail and replace any hidden move on every Pokémon you intend to migrate. Keep in mind that the move cannot be undone.
- Unlock Platinum’s National Pokédex. The Pal Park feature requires this milestone in Pokémon Platinum. If the option is missing, finish the in-game requirements for the National Pokédex first.
- Use hardware with both cartridge slots. Insert the Platinum DS Game Card into the DS slot and the GBA Pokémon Game Pak into the GBA slot. A DS Lite is the most commonly encountered DS-family system with this arrangement, while Nintendo also documents GBA play on the original DS.
- Start the Pal Park migration. Follow Platinum’s on-screen instructions to select the eligible Pokémon from the inserted GBA Game Pak. The game will warn you about the one-way nature of the operation.
- Catch the migrated Pokémon at Pal Park. After the migration step, travel to Pal Park in Platinum and catch the Pokémon there. They are not placed directly into a Platinum PC box without this catching step.
- Verify the result before moving on. Check Platinum’s party and PC boxes, then confirm that the Pokémon you expected are present. Do not erase or trade away the source cartridge until you have verified the migration.
The DS is handling the same cartridge-based Pal Park process described for a GBA-era game; it is not converting the cartridge save into a modern HOME file. The DS simply supplies the compatible GBA slot and runs the required game hardware.

Can those Pokémon reach Pokémon HOME?
Pal Park gets the Pokémon into Pokémon Platinum, but it does not send them straight to HOME. A legacy transfer chain normally requires later compatible Pokémon games and services, and each step has its own compatibility rules. Nintendo’s compatibility information for Poké Transporter and Pokémon Bank does not list an original GBA cartridge as a direct Poké Transporter source.
That distinction is important: the documented route starts with the GBA Game Pak, moves the Pokémon into Platinum through Pal Park, and only then considers later-generation transfers. There is no official instruction in the sources covered here for inserting an original Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed or LeafGreen cartridge and selecting it as a direct HOME import source.
Pokémon Bank’s service deadline
Nintendo announced that Pokémon Bank and Bank-to-HOME transfers will end on February 25, 2027, at 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Bank is no longer available to download. This is a service cutoff, not a guarantee that every legacy transfer will work until the final minute; account access, compatible games and the required applications must already be in place.

Do not confuse original cartridges with Switch FireRed and LeafGreen
Nintendo’s current Pokémon HOME instructions include a workflow for the Switch releases of FireRed and LeafGreen. That is a separate source format from an original GBA Game Pak. The Switch instructions describe selecting the Switch GBA games within the HOME process and state that Pokémon moved from those releases cannot be moved back to them.
Nothing in that workflow says that HOME reads the save data from an original FireRed or LeafGreen cartridge. Owning the same game title on two different platforms does not make their save files interchangeable. For a cartridge owner, use the Pal Park route and its Generation IV requirements; for a Switch release, follow the HOME instructions for that release.
Original GBA cartridge versus Switch release
| Question | Original GBA cartridge | Switch FireRed or LeafGreen release |
|---|---|---|
| Source media | Original Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed or LeafGreen Game Pak | Switch version of FireRed or LeafGreen |
| Hardware needed for the first move | DS or DS Lite with a GBA cartridge slot, plus Pokémon Platinum | Switch system and the HOME workflow specified for the Switch release |
| First documented destination | Pal Park in Pokémon Platinum | Pokémon HOME workflow for the Switch game |
| Can the move be reversed? | No. Pokémon leave the GBA Game Pak and cannot return. | No return to the Switch FireRed or LeafGreen release after transfer, according to Nintendo’s instructions. |
| Direct original-cartridge import to HOME | Not documented by Nintendo’s route | Handled through the release’s HOME support, not through an original cartridge save |
| Time limitation | Later Bank-to-HOME transfers end February 25, 2027, at 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time | Subject to the HOME and platform support stated for that release |
Common problems and how to diagnose them
“Pal Park is not showing up”
The first checks are the receiving game and the Pokédex milestone. The documented procedure is for Pokémon Platinum, and Platinum must have the National Pokédex. A compatible cartridge in the wrong DS-family model, or a game that has not reached the required story point, will not satisfy those conditions.
“The Pokémon is rejected”
Check whether it is holding Mail or knows a hidden move. Remove the item or replace the move in the GBA game, then try again. Also confirm that the source Game Pak is one of the five titles listed by Nintendo.

“I only have a DSi, 3DS or another newer system”
The documented hardware requirement is a system with a GBA cartridge slot. A system that cannot physically accept the cartridge cannot perform this Pal Park step. Do not assume that a digital copy, a memory-card save or a later handheld’s compatibility makes it a cartridge reader.
“I want to test the transfer and then undo it”
Do not proceed with Pokémon you may want to keep on the GBA cartridge. Pal Park removes them from the source Game Pak and Nintendo says they cannot go back. The same one-way warning applies to the Switch release workflow when Pokémon are moved out of those games.
“I reached Platinum but cannot finish the journey to HOME”
Separate the Pal Park success from the later-service problem. Confirm that the Pokémon are safely in Platinum, then check the compatibility rules for every subsequent game and service. Bank is no longer downloadable and its Bank-to-HOME function has a February 25, 2027, 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time end date, so a missing application or incompatible intermediate game can block the final step even when Pal Park worked.

If you are looking for a DS Lite or another used handheld solely for this task, verify the exact model and condition first. The device must accept the GBA Game Pak and read a DS Game Card at the same time. You also need:
- A supported, readable Pokémon GBA cartridge
- Pokémon Platinum with the National Pokédex unlocked
- Eligible Pokémon with no Mail and no hidden moves
- A plan for later compatible games and services if HOME is the destination
- Enough time to complete the legacy steps before the Bank-to-HOME cutoff, if Bank is part of your route
No marketplace listing or used-system condition is guaranteed merely by the model name. Inspect the cartridge slot, game-card slot, batteries and save behavior, and confirm that the exact handheld model has the slot arrangement required by Pal Park before relying on it.
The practical answer
You can transfer Pokémon from an original GBA game without owning a Game Boy Advance console by using a compatible Nintendo DS or DS Lite for the Pal Park migration into Pokémon Platinum. You cannot skip the cartridge-slot hardware entirely, and Nintendo has not documented a direct original-cartridge-to-HOME import. Because Pal Park is irreversible and Bank-to-HOME ends on February 25, 2027, at 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time, verify the hardware, game, eligibility and complete transfer chain before moving any Pokémon.
