Can You Transfer Nintendo Switch Games and Save Data to a Switch 2 microSD Express Card?

No. A Switch 2 microSD Express card cannot receive Nintendo Switch save data, and copying an old Switch microSD card will not move installed games or progress to Switch 2. Save files stay in the console’s system memory. Use Nintendo’s system-transfer process, an individual nearby save transfer, or Save Data Cloud where the account and game support it. The card is for Switch 2 downloads, updates, downloadable content, screenshots, and videos—not saved games.

What the Switch 2 microSD Express card can—and cannot—store

Nintendo separates software storage from save storage on Switch 2. A compatible microSD Express card expands space for downloadable software, game updates, downloadable content (DLC), screenshots, and captured video. It does not become a general-purpose migration drive.

Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ states: “Game save data cannot be saved or copied to a microSD Express card.” That applies whether the game was downloaded from Nintendo eShop or is being played from a physical game card. The progress associated with the game remains in Switch 2 system memory.

Data Can it use a Switch 2 microSD Express card? Where transfer or storage is handled
Game save data No Switch 2 system memory; transfer through Nintendo-supported console or cloud methods
Downloaded games Yes Downloaded to the target console, with compatible software storage on the microSD Express card
Game updates and DLC Yes Switch 2 system storage or compatible microSD Express storage
Screenshots and videos Yes microSD Express storage; media from an old Switch card may be imported during setup
Old Switch microSD game installations No Redownload eligible digital software through the Nintendo Account after transfer

Nintendo supports standard-compliant microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. Cards are sold separately. The capacity limit concerns expanded storage; it does not change the rule that saves remain in system memory.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Why an old Switch microSD card does not migrate your games

Older Nintendo Switch consoles use microSD cards for software and media, but those cards are not compatible with Switch 2 for game data. Inserting an old card, or copying its folders to a new card, will not make installed Switch games appear as playable installations on Switch 2.

During Switch 2 setup, Nintendo may offer to import screenshots and videos from an old Switch microSD card into Switch 2 system memory. That is a media-import function, not a game or save migration. Treat the old card as a source for captures only unless Nintendo’s current on-screen instructions say otherwise.

Digital ownership is tied to the Nintendo Account that purchased the software. After a system transfer and initial setup, eligible digital games are downloaded to the target Switch 2 over the internet. The download can then use the console’s internal storage or a compatible microSD Express card, but the associated save is still stored in system memory.

Choose the transfer method that matches your situation

Method Best use Save behavior Important conditions
System transfer to Switch 2 Moving an account, settings, digital software, and supported data during initial setup Handled according to Nintendo’s local or server-transfer path and the title’s support status Internet connection required; digital software is downloaded after setup; some source data can be removed
Individual nearby save transfer Moving selected progress after setup or without moving the entire console profile Moves the selected save from the source console to the target console; it is not copied to a card Both consoles need internet, must be near each other, and the relevant users must be linked to the same Nintendo Account; Nintendo Switch Online is not required
Save Data Cloud Backing up and restoring supported saves between consoles Supported saves can be backed up and downloaded to another console Requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a game that supports Save Data Cloud; support is not universal
Virtual Game Card Loading an eligible digital game on another linked system Does not itself transfer or synchronize the save Game loading and save transfer are separate operations
microSD Express card Adding storage for Switch 2 software and media Cannot store or transfer save data Use a card that meets the microSD Express standard, up to Nintendo’s stated 2 TB limit

How to move everything during Switch 2 setup

Use Nintendo’s System Transfer screens when you are replacing an original Switch with a Switch 2. This is the broadest migration option, but it is not a card-copy procedure.

  1. Prepare both consoles. Charge the original Switch and Switch 2, connect them to the internet, and keep them close enough for the on-screen transfer process. Install any system updates Nintendo requires before starting.
  2. Start Switch 2 setup. Choose the system-transfer option when it appears. If setup has already been completed, open the relevant data-management or system-transfer option in Settings and follow Nintendo’s current labels.
  3. Sign in with the Nintendo Account. Use the account associated with the digital purchases and the user profiles whose saves you want to move. Account ownership is what allows eligible software to be downloaded again.
  4. Select local or server transfer when offered. Nintendo distinguishes between moving directly between nearby consoles and uploading data for a server-mediated transfer. Read each warning: a server transfer initializes the source console after the upload, while other transfer paths can remove selected data from the source.
  5. Review save eligibility. Nintendo’s transfer flow treats saves differently depending on whether the user is linked, whether the title supports Save Data Cloud, and whether that title has an exception. Do not assume that every game receives identical treatment.
  6. Finish setup and download software. Digital games are downloaded to Switch 2 after setup, so plan for an internet connection and enough available storage. A microSD Express card can provide that software space.
  7. Verify before erasing the old console. Open several transferred games, check the expected user profiles and progress, and confirm that essential screenshots or videos are present. Do not initialize or sell the old Switch until those checks are complete.

Nintendo’s instructions and menus can change with system updates. Follow the exact prompts shown on your consoles rather than relying on an old video or a remembered menu name.

How to transfer only selected save data

If you do not want a full console move, Nintendo supports an individual nearby save-data transfer. This transfers a selected save between consoles; it does not create a file on the microSD Express card and it does not leave an independent duplicate on the source in the ordinary transfer flow.

  1. Connect both consoles to the internet and place them near each other.
  2. Make sure the source and target users are linked to the same Nintendo Account.
  3. Open the save-data transfer function in System Settings on the consoles and choose the option for sending or receiving save data.
  4. Select the user and game on the source console, then select the target console.
  5. Confirm the warnings and allow the transfer to finish without putting either console to sleep or disconnecting it.
  6. Launch the game on Switch 2 and verify the transferred progress before changing or deleting anything on the source.

Nintendo says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required for this nearby transfer, but internet access, proximity, and the same linked Nintendo Account are required. The game’s own compatibility and Nintendo’s current support guidance still control whether the transfer is available.

When Save Data Cloud is the better option

Save Data Cloud is useful when you need a backup or cannot place both consoles together. A Nintendo Switch Online member can back up supported game saves and download them on another console signed in to the appropriate account.

  • Membership: An active Nintendo Switch Online subscription is required.
  • Game support: Not every title supports Save Data Cloud. Games with competitive, shared, or specially managed progress can have exceptions.
  • Correct user: The save belongs to a Nintendo Account-linked user, so select the same account on the destination console.
  • Current status: Check Nintendo’s support entry for the specific game before deleting the original save or console.

Cloud backup is not a workaround for the microSD restriction. The cloud service and system memory are the save destinations; the card remains software and media storage.

What Virtual Game Cards do—and do not do

Virtual Game Cards let eligible digital purchases be loaded or ejected between linked systems. They address where a digital license is loaded for play, not where the game’s progress is stored.

  • Multiple Capacity Options – Available in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB options to suit your storage needs. Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

After loading a digital game on another linked console, you still need a supported save-transfer method if you want to continue the same progress. Moving the virtual game card alone will not bring the save with it, and inserting a microSD Express card does not change that separation.

Common mistakes and safer fixes

Copying the old card and expecting the game library to appear

Why it fails: Legacy Switch microSD cards are not compatible with Switch 2 for game data.

Fix: Complete Nintendo’s system transfer, then redownload eligible digital purchases through the owning Nintendo Account. Use a Switch 2-compatible microSD Express card for the new downloads.

Looking for saves in the card’s folders

Why it fails: Switch 2 save data is maintained in system memory and cannot be copied to microSD Express.

Fix: Use system transfer, individual nearby save transfer, or Save Data Cloud when the title supports the relevant method.

Assuming every game supports cloud backup

Why it fails: Save Data Cloud support is title-specific, and Nintendo also distinguishes linked users and unsupported games in its transfer guidance.

Fix: Check the current Nintendo support instructions for the named game before starting. If cloud backup is unavailable, use the supported system-transfer or nearby-transfer route.

Initializing the old Switch too soon

Why it fails: Some transfer paths remove data from the source, and a server transfer can initialize the source after upload.

Fix: Read every warning, keep the old console powered and available, and verify users, games, and progress on Switch 2 before resetting the source.

Confusing a virtual game card with a save transfer

Why it fails: Virtual Game Cards move the playable digital software entitlement between linked systems, not the save file.

Preparing a microSD Express card after migration

Buy a card that meets the microSD Express standard and stays within Nintendo’s stated maximum capacity of 2 TB. Insert it into Switch 2 and use the console’s storage-management screens to select it for supported downloads and related content.

  • Use the card for downloadable games, updates, DLC, screenshots, and videos.
  • Do not treat the card as the only copy of important saves; it cannot hold them.
  • Allow enough free space for large downloads and updates, even when the card’s advertised capacity is high.
  • If you are copying data between two Switch 2 microSD Express cards, use a compatible card reader and follow Nintendo’s data-management instructions. That scenario concerns software and media, not save files.

No particular card brand is required by the guidance summarized here. Compatibility with the microSD Express standard matters more than copying an old Switch card or choosing a card based only on its capacity.

Decision checklist

  • Need the entire old console moved during first setup? Start Nintendo’s System Transfer and review its save-eligibility and source-data warnings.
  • Need only one or two games moved? Try individual nearby save transfer, provided both consoles have internet and the users share the same Nintendo Account.
  • Need a backup or remote restore? Use Save Data Cloud only when you have Nintendo Switch Online and the title supports it.
  • Need more room for downloads? Install a compatible microSD Express card; it will not become a save destination.
  • Want to play a digital purchase on another linked system? Use Virtual Game Cards, then handle the save separately.
  • Still unsure about one title? Check that game’s current Nintendo support page before deleting the source save or initializing a console.

Bottom line

A Switch 2 microSD Express card cannot transfer or store Nintendo Switch save data. It is expanded storage for Switch 2 software and media. Move digital games through your Nintendo Account and system-transfer process, move selected progress with Nintendo’s nearby save-transfer feature, or use Save Data Cloud for supported titles. Keep the old console until you have verified the saves you need on Switch 2.
