Usually, you cannot transfer a game purchase from one launcher or storefront to another. The game files may be movable, and a shortcut may let you launch a title from a different app, but neither action normally changes which account owns the game or which launcher authorizes it. For example, Epic says that ownership does not transfer between platforms, while Rockstar says its launcher entitlements are tied to the account that purchased them. Check the official support page for the specific game before relying on an exception.
What does “transfer a game” mean?
The phrase can refer to several different things, and the answer changes depending on which one you mean:

- Purchase ownership: The account or storefront that recognizes your purchase and grants permission to launch the game. This is what people usually mean by transferring a game, and it generally does not move between storefronts.
- Installed files: The game data stored on your PC. You may be able to move or copy these files to another folder, drive, or computer, but the destination launcher still needs to recognize and verify them, and the account must have a valid entitlement.
- A library entry: Some launchers let you add another app’s game as a shortcut. That can make it easier to find or start the game, but it does not turn the purchase into one owned by the launcher where the shortcut appears.
- Saves, DLC, and progression: These are separate from both the purchase and the installation. Whether they carry across platforms depends on the particular game and its account systems.
Keeping these categories separate prevents a common misunderstanding: a folder full of game files is not proof of ownership, and a game displayed in a launcher’s library is not necessarily a game purchased there.

Can you move a purchase between Steam, Battle.net, or another store?
As a practical rule, assume that a purchase belongs to the storefront and account where you bought it unless the game’s publisher explicitly says otherwise. Epic’s support page states that games bought on another platform cannot be played through the Epic Games Launcher and that “Ownership does not transfer between platforms.” Rockstar provides another specific example: it says its launcher entitlements remain connected to the purchasing account and are non-transferable between Rockstar accounts.

Those examples support a general rule, not a guarantee about every game or service. There is no universal transfer policy established here for Battle.net or every other launcher. If you want to play a particular purchase through a different storefront, check that game’s official support information and confirm which account owns it. Do not assume that linking accounts, moving files, or seeing a title in a launcher changes the purchase entitlement.

The useful comparison is whether you are changing the storage location or changing storefront ownership. Moving a Steam installation to another Steam library, for example, is different from asking Steam to recognize a Battle.net purchase. Likewise, copying files to a second PC may save redownloading, but it does not make that second PC—or a different launcher—own the game.
How to use a Steam shortcut for a game from another launcher
Steam’s “Add Non-Steam Games to a Library” feature creates a shortcut. Steam’s support page describes the result plainly: “This will only add a shortcut to your game in the Steam client.” It is a convenience entry, not a transfer.

- Select the game or its launcher executable from the available list, or browse to the appropriate program if it is not listed.
- Add the entry and start the game using that shortcut. The original launcher may still need to run, and you must still be signed into an account entitled to play.
Because the shortcut is not a Steam purchase, Steam does not provide updates for the game through this feature. Adding a title this way also does not serve as proof that you own it on Steam. For updates and entitlement checks, use the storefront or launcher that actually recognizes the purchase.

How to move game files without treating them as a transfer
Moving a Steam installation
Steam documents moving its installations through its library and game-file management features. Follow Steam’s current instructions to create or select a different library location, move the installation, and verify the installed game files. Verification lets Steam check the files in the context of a Steam installation; it does not grant access to a game your Steam account does not own.

Moving an Epic installation
Epic’s documented file-moving procedure is for an Epic-installed game moved to a different directory while continuing to use the Epic Games Launcher. It is not a procedure for converting a Steam or Battle.net purchase into an Epic entitlement. Follow Epic’s current steps so the launcher can locate and verify the installation.

Copying Steam files to another PC over a local network
Steam supports local network transfers of game and update files between PCs when the feature’s settings and conditions allow. This can reduce the amount of data that needs to be downloaded again, but it transfers files, not ownership. The receiving PC still needs to use the appropriate Steam account and meet Steam’s requirements for installing and launching the game.

Using a portable drive
A portable drive can carry or back up large local game files, but the drive only stores data. It does not unlock a title in a new storefront, transfer DLC, or bypass the launcher that checks the entitlement. Use the owning launcher’s supported move or verification process after copying files, rather than assuming that a copied folder will be ready to play.

Not necessarily. A base-game purchase, save files, online progression, downloadable content, and account-linked unlocks can each follow different rules. A game may support cross-progression without making a purchase transferable, or it may require separate access to add-ons on another platform. The sources here do not establish a universal rule for these features.

Look up the exact game and the specific data or content you want to carry over. Check whether the publisher supports cross-save or cross-progression, which platforms and accounts are covered, and whether DLC or in-game purchases are treated separately. Do not treat an account link as proof that every item or save will appear on the other platform.
How to check before moving or buying again
- Identify the goal. Decide whether you need ownership on a new storefront, a shortcut, a different install location, files on a second PC, or access to saves and add-ons.
- Find the account that owns the game. Check the purchase history or library in the storefront where it was bought. The destination launcher may not recognize the entitlement.
- Consult the official page for the specific game. Look for explicit statements about cross-platform purchases, account linking, transfers, cross-save, cross-progression, and DLC. A general launcher feature is not a substitute for the game’s own rules.
- Use the owning launcher’s file instructions. For a move or copy, use that launcher’s documented procedure and verification step. Steam and Epic document handling installations within their respective launchers.
- Test the intended account and launch path. After moving files or adding a shortcut, sign into the account that owns the game and start it through the supported launcher. If access fails, check the account and entitlement before deleting or downloading files again.
What to do if the launcher does not recognize copied files
A copied installation may not be detected automatically, or the launcher may require a supported install or verification step. The files can be present even when the launcher has not associated them with a valid installation.
- Confirm that you are signed into the account that owns the game.
- Use the launcher’s own documented move, install-location, or verification workflow rather than relying on a shortcut from another storefront.
- Check the game’s official support page for launcher-specific requirements. A procedure for one launcher does not establish a procedure for another.
- If the game launches but a save, DLC item, or progression is missing, check that feature’s separate platform and account rules; file copying alone does not show that the content is transferable.
What Epic and Rockstar’s policies do—and do not—establish
Epic’s cross-platform support answer is direct about games purchased on another platform: it says they cannot be played through the Epic Games Launcher and that ownership does not transfer between platforms. Epic also has a separate guide for moving an Epic-installed game to another directory, illustrating the difference between relocating files within a launcher and changing purchase ownership. Epic’s End User License Agreement describes its software license as personal and non-transferable, subject to the agreement and software-specific terms.

Can I move a game from Battle.net to Steam?
Do not assume that you can transfer the purchase. The research here does not establish a current Battle.net-wide transfer policy, and moving the game files would not by itself change the entitlement.
