A digital game purchase is a personal license recorded by a specific account and storefront. You can normally move that same account to a replacement console and redownload its games, but you generally cannot reassign the license to another account or turn a PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam or Epic purchase into an entitlement on a different platform.
The key is to separate five different things people call a “transfer”: moving an account to new hardware, sharing access on one console, carrying saves or cosmetics through a publisher account, using a cross-buy entitlement, and changing who owns the store license. Only the first four may be available, and each has different rules.

What “transfer a digital game” can mean
Before attempting anything, identify the result you actually need. A license transfer changes the account that owns the purchase. A console migration keeps the same owner and places that account on new hardware. Save transfer moves progress, while cross-buy grants a second platform entitlement. Family or console sharing lets another user play without changing ownership.

| Replace a console | Sign in with the purchasing account, migrate data where supported, and redownload the library. | It does not move ownership to a different account. |
| Give a game to another account on the same platform | Normally unavailable. Family or console-sharing features may provide access under platform rules. | Sharing is not reassignment of the license. |
| Play on another platform | Requires a specific cross-buy or publisher entitlement. | The same email address alone does not create a second-store entitlement. |
| Carry progress, characters or cosmetics | May work through a linked publisher account with cross-progression. | Progress portability does not necessarily include the store license or every item. |
| Fix a purchase made on the wrong account | Contact platform or publisher support; any exception is case-specific. | You usually cannot perform the move yourself. |
Why account-to-account transfers are generally blocked
Digital stores sell a license for use by the account that completed the transaction. The license is recorded in that storefront’s account system, not as a file that can be copied to another login. Downloading the same installer elsewhere does not recreate the entitlement.

Nintendo states this directly: “It’s not possible to transfer digital purchases from one Nintendo Account to another.” Epic Games’ terms describe the license to its licensed products as “personal and non-transferable.” Ubisoft’s help guidance, updated 22 April 2026, likewise says: “Please note that it is not possible to transfer games to another platform or Ubisoft account.” These are ownership rules, not instructions for a particular console model.
Using the same email address on two services does not change the result. A PlayStation purchase remains a PlayStation-store license; it does not become an Xbox, Nintendo, Steam or Epic entitlement merely because the publisher account or email matches.
Moving purchases to a replacement console
Replacing hardware is the situation most often mistaken for an ownership transfer. If you keep using the purchasing account, the platform can normally recognize the library on the new device. The exact process differs by platform and whether the old console still works.

Nintendo Switch
Nintendo’s console-transfer workflow moves the user, Nintendo Account relationship and save data to another Switch. After signing in on the replacement system, purchases associated with that account can be downloaded again. If the original console is unavailable, Nintendo’s guidance is to sign in on the new console and redownload the digital games; the available recovery steps depend on the account and console state.

Nintendo also explains that downloaded content can be available to other users on a console when the game’s virtual game card is loaded there. That is local access controlled by the console and account settings, not a transfer of the purchase to each user’s Nintendo Account. Removing the virtual game card or changing the console arrangement can remove that access.
PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5
Sony’s PS5 quick-start guidance describes transferring data from PS4 to PS5 while signing in with the existing account. Game history, trophies, profile information and downloaded content carry over to the PS5 under that same account. This is a supported migration to newer hardware. It does not assign the license to another PSN account, and it does not convert the purchase into a license for a different storefront.
Other console replacements
For an Xbox or another platform, use the account’s own migration, license-restoration and redownload tools. The safe assumption is the same: sign in with the account that bought the game, restore licenses if the platform offers that command, and download from the library. Do not delete the old account or unlink publisher accounts until you have confirmed that the new console can launch the games and that saves have synchronized.
Using a different account on the same console
A second account on the same device does not normally inherit the purchaser’s library as its own. Some platforms offer family, home-console or console-sharing features that let other users launch games while the purchasing account remains entitled. Availability, device limits and online requirements vary, so treat this as access sharing rather than ownership.

- The purchasing account must remain in good standing and, on some platforms, designated as the home or primary account.
- Removing that account, changing the designated console or losing online verification can end the other user’s access.
- Save files, downloadable content and subscriptions may follow different sharing rules from the base game.
- A shared game cannot normally be sold, exported or claimed permanently by the second account.
Playing a purchase on another platform
Assume that a new platform requires a separate purchase unless the game’s publisher explicitly advertises cross-buy. Cross-buy is a deliberate entitlement that grants versions on specified stores; it is not created by linking accounts after purchase.
Cross-save and cross-progression are separate. A game may let you carry a character, inventory or campaign progress between platforms while requiring a new license on the destination store. Conversely, a title may offer cross-buy but keep saves local. Check the game’s stated platform list and the publisher’s account rules before buying again or unlinking anything.
Publisher accounts do not become store wallets
Ubisoft says games and in-game content are linked to both the platform account and the Ubisoft account where they were activated. Linking another platform account can enable available cross-play and cross-progression, but Ubisoft warns that unlinking can permanently affect games and subscriptions. Relinking is generally limited to the original platform account, so connecting the wrong account can create a difficult recovery case.
EA supports linking console, Steam and Epic accounts to an EA Account, but warns that not everything transfers, including game progress. A linked EA Account can identify you across supported versions; it does not automatically move every purchase, DLC item or save to every platform.

When support might help
Support teams sometimes correct an account mistake or evaluate a merge, but this is an exception rather than a normal self-service feature. EA’s multiple-account guidance says users cannot move games or platform accounts themselves. A support-mediated merge is not always possible and may be blocked by bans, child-account status or age-rating restrictions.
Contact support when the purchase is on the wrong account, a child account needs to be handled under the family structure, or a platform account was linked incorrectly. Have the transaction receipt, account IDs, platform, game title and approximate purchase date ready. Do not promise that a support agent can transfer the license; ask whether the specific account state qualifies for a correction, merge or refund under current policy.
PC storefront and license exceptions
Epic’s terms make the general rule clear: the license is personal and non-transferable. Purchases made through a third-party store are governed by that store’s account and license terms, so an Epic purchase does not become a Steam entitlement and vice versa.
A Steam-hosted EA end-user license agreement contains a narrow one-time transfer clause for situations in which technical protection measures support it. The clause requires transfer of all copies and retention of no copies, while online features and account-limited content may remain non-transferable. This is an exceptional software-license provision, not a general Steam account-transfer function. Do not rely on it unless the exact game agreement and support team confirm that it applies.

Follow this decision process
- Define the destination. Is it a replacement console, another user account, or a different platform? These are separate cases.
- Keep the purchasing account. On replacement hardware, sign in with the account that paid, run the platform’s migration or license-restoration process, and redownload from its library.
- Check for an explicit cross-buy promise. Look for the game’s named platforms and entitlement language. Without that statement, budget for a second license on the destination store.
- Check cross-progression separately. Confirm exactly which saves, characters, items and currencies move, and whether linking is one-time or reversible.
- Review unlinking warnings. Publisher accounts can have permanent consequences and may only be relinked to the original platform account.
- Use sharing only for access. If another household member needs to play, review the platform’s family or console-sharing limits instead of trying to transfer ownership.
- Escalate unusual cases. For a wrong account, child account or ban-related problem, contact official support before changing links or deleting users.
Common failure modes and safe fixes
“I used the same email, but the game is missing.”
Email addresses are identifiers, not universal licenses. Verify that you signed into the exact purchasing account and the same storefront region or platform family. If the purchase still does not appear, use the store’s order history and license-restoration process before contacting support.
“I linked my publisher account and expected the game to appear.”
Linking may activate cross-play or cross-progression, but it does not necessarily grant the store license. Check the publisher’s transfer scope and keep the original platform account linked until you know which data is portable.
“My friend can play, so the game must be theirs now.”
Console or family sharing grants conditional access. The original purchaser remains the license holder, and access can end when the home-console setting, subscription or account authorization changes.

Saves, base-game licenses and add-on entitlements can be checked separately. Confirm that the destination account owns the same edition and that the add-on is supported on that platform. Cross-progression does not guarantee that every purchase or item is included.
“I want to unlink the wrong account and start over.”
Pause first. Ubisoft warns that unlinking can permanently affect games and subscriptions, and relinking may be restricted to the original account. Read the platform and publisher warnings and ask support for the safest correction path before unlinking.
What to verify before buying again
- The exact account that completed the transaction.
- The storefront and platform on which the license was activated.
- Whether the title explicitly supports cross-buy, cross-save or cross-progression.
- Which content is covered: base game, expansions, virtual currency, cosmetics and subscriptions.
- Whether the destination account is a child account, banned account or otherwise restricted.
- Whether a support case is open before you unlink, merge or delete any account.
The practical rule is simple: migrate the same account to new hardware; do not expect to transfer ownership to another account or platform. Only an explicit cross-buy entitlement or a narrowly approved support exception changes that outcome.
