Usually, no. A digital game purchase is normally a license for the account and storefront that sold it. A PlayStation purchase does not ordinarily become an Xbox, Nintendo or Steam purchase. Transfers are possible only in narrower cases: replacing a console in the same platform family, using a publisher’s documented cross-buy or cross-entitlement program, or accessing a title that includes both console and PC versions under one account. Save files, downloadable content and multiplayer progress follow separate rules, so check each one independently before buying another copy.
What a digital game purchase actually gives you
When you buy a download, you are generally acquiring a revocable license rather than a file that can be moved between stores. The platform holder records the entitlement against your account in its own commerce system. The console or PC then checks that entitlement when you download, launch or restore the game.

Each storefront has its own license database, payment records, refund policy and account identity. PlayStation Network, Xbox/Microsoft Store, Nintendo eShop and Steam therefore treat a purchase as belonging to their respective ecosystems. Copying the game data to a different machine does not copy the license, and signing in on another platform does not merge storefront histories.

Publishers can create exceptions, but those exceptions must be explicitly implemented. A game may recognize the same publisher account on several platforms, grant a second version through cross-buy, or synchronize progress through cross-save. None of those features is automatic merely because the title has the same name on two systems.

Same-platform replacement is different from cross-platform transfer
Moving an entitlement to a replacement console in the same family is often supported because the platform holder can keep the purchase attached to your existing account. Nintendo, for example, says a system transfer can move the Nintendo Account, user profile, save data and eShop purchases to a replacement console. That process changes the hardware associated with your account; it does not convert an eShop purchase into a purchase on another company’s store.
The distinction matters when you upgrade, replace a failed console or add a second device. Use the platform’s account-transfer, restore or virtual-game-card tools rather than attempting to export files manually. You normally need access to the original account credentials, both devices, current system software and an internet connection for entitlement checks.
Cross-platform scenarios at a glance
| Starting purchase | Destination | What normally happens | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Store | Xbox, Nintendo or Steam | Separate destination purchase is required. | Look for a publisher announcement using “cross-buy” or “cross-entitlement.” |
| Xbox console store | Windows PC | Some titles include both versions through Xbox Play Anywhere or another Microsoft entitlement; others do not. | Confirm the exact product page, edition and Microsoft account. |
| Steam | Console store | Steam ownership does not grant a console license. | Check for a publisher account that grants a console copy; this is uncommon and game-specific. |
| Nintendo eShop | Another Switch | Use the same Nintendo Account with system-transfer or virtual-game-card features. | Verify that the destination console is registered and that saves are backed up where supported. |
| Any platform | New account on the same platform | Ownership usually remains with the purchasing account. | Review family-sharing or console-sharing rules instead of trying to change the owner. |
Moving a purchase from PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo or Steam to another ecosystem
Assume the license will not transfer unless the game’s official documentation says otherwise. The destination store sells its own SKU, even when the title, publisher and downloadable files are identical. A disc or download code for one platform also cannot be redeemed in another platform’s store.

How to verify an exception
- Open the publisher’s official support page or the game’s official store listing.
- Search the page for “cross-buy,” “cross-entitlement,” “cross-progression,” “cross-save” and the exact pair of platforms you use.
- Read the edition and region terms. A deluxe edition, subscription version or remaster may have different entitlements from the standard game.
- Confirm which account must be linked and whether linking is permanent or subject to a cooldown.
- Check whether only progress transfers or whether a second platform license is actually included.
Do not treat cross-play as proof of portability. Cross-play means players on different platforms can join the same online sessions. It does not grant the other platform’s store license, and it does not necessarily synchronize saves or DLC.
Xbox console to Windows PC
Xbox is the major case in which a console purchase may include a PC version, but the title must qualify. Microsoft describes each downloaded game as having both a device-based license and a user-based license. The user license is associated with your Microsoft account; the device license permits use on a designated Home console under Microsoft’s sharing rules.
Check for Xbox Play Anywhere
Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere designation on the exact product page. A qualifying digital purchase generally provides the Xbox console and Windows PC versions through the Microsoft Store, with one account recognizing the entitlement on supported devices. The designation applies to specific games and editions, not to every game sold on Xbox.

- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
A purchase made on Steam is separate. Even if the game connects to Xbox services or supports cross-play, Steam’s license remains in Steam’s storefront. You would need a Microsoft Store entitlement, an explicit publisher promotion, or another documented exception to avoid buying the PC version again.
What may and may not synchronize
- Achievements and account identity may synchronize through Xbox services.
- Save data may roam when the game supports Xbox cloud saves or its own cross-save system.
- PC and console DLC must be checked by item; platform-specific add-ons may not be shared.
- Peripheral support, graphics settings and installed mods can differ between the two versions.
Sign in with the Microsoft account that made the purchase, install the Xbox app or Microsoft Store version specified by the game, and verify the Play Anywhere badge before assuming the download should be free.
Nintendo Switch to another Switch
Nintendo states that digital games and downloadable content are tied to the Nintendo Account that purchased them. It also states that digital purchases cannot be transferred from one Nintendo Account to another. Therefore, the supported path to a new Switch is to use the original purchasing account, not to create a new owner account on the replacement device.
System transfer procedure
- Update both Switch consoles and connect them to the internet.
- On the source console, open System Settings, choose Users, then select Transfer Your User Data and follow the prompts.
- On the destination console, choose the matching transfer option and sign in to the same Nintendo Account.
- Allow the transfer to finish before deleting the user from the source console or formatting either device.
- Redownload eligible games from the eShop or manage them through Nintendo’s virtual-game-card controls.
The exact menu wording can vary with system software and region, so follow the prompts shown on both consoles. A transfer may move the user profile and associated data, but it does not make the purchase available to an unrelated Nintendo Account.
Saves and Nintendo Switch Online
Save data is separate from ownership. Nintendo documents local save-data transfer and Save Data Cloud for supported games. A cloud backup can restore progress on a replacement console when the game supports the service and the subscription and account conditions are met. It does not transfer the eShop license, and games that do not support cloud backup require the applicable local-transfer method.

Creating a new account is not a license-transfer method. Nintendo explicitly prohibits moving a digital game or DLC from one Nintendo Account to another. On Xbox, sharing is handled through the Home-console designation and signed-in-user rules rather than by changing the account listed as purchaser.

Xbox Home-console model
The purchasing Microsoft account has a user-based license. A designated Home Xbox also receives a device-based license, allowing other users on that console to access eligible games and subscriptions under Microsoft’s rules. When the purchaser signs in on another Xbox, access follows that user account; the sharing behavior on the first console depends on which device is set as Home.
Because Home-console assignments are limited and can be changed only a certain number of times within a period, do not rotate them casually between friends. Remove old consoles from your account, enable two-factor authentication and review the current sharing terms before changing the setting.

Think of a game as several separate assets rather than one transferable package.
| Asset | Typical owner | Can it move to another platform? |
|---|---|---|
| Base-game license | Platform storefront account | Only when the platform or publisher documents cross-buy or cross-entitlement. |
| Local save file | Console or PC storage, sometimes cloud storage | Sometimes, through system transfer, cloud sync or a publisher cross-save service. |
| DLC and season passes | Store account and often a platform-specific SKU | Must be checked item by item; ownership of the base game does not guarantee shared DLC. |
| Online character or inventory | Publisher account or game server | May follow a linked publisher account, subject to platform and region restrictions. |
| Achievements and trophies | Platform account | Usually remain on the original platform; a publisher may offer separate achievements elsewhere. |
Cross-progression is not the same as cross-save in every game. One service may copy a complete profile while another synchronizes only a character level or inventory. Read the game’s transfer rules before unlinking an account, because some publishers restrict relinking or permanently bind progress to the first platform account.
A practical checklist before you buy the destination version
- Write down the original platform, storefront, region, edition and purchasing account.
- Identify the exact destination platform and whether it uses a different storefront from the original.
- Check the official game page for cross-buy, cross-entitlement, Play Anywhere or a publisher account requirement.
- Verify save compatibility separately from license compatibility.
- List every DLC pack, currency balance and subscription benefit you expect to keep.
- Back up saves before moving consoles, unlinking accounts or reinstalling the game.
- Check family-sharing, Home-console or household-device limits if another user needs access.
- Keep purchase receipts and note the region; customer support generally cannot convert a license that the store does not sell.
Common failed approaches and how to recover
Copying the installation folder
Copying files can save download time on a compatible PC, but it does not create a destination-store entitlement. Install the destination version and let that storefront verify the license.
Using the same email address
An identical email does not merge PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo and Steam accounts. Link the publisher account only through the game’s official account-management page, and confirm which platform identities are attached.

- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
Assuming a subscription owns the game
Game catalogs and trial access are subscriptions, not permanent cross-platform purchases. If a catalog title leaves the service or your subscription ends, access can disappear even though a different platform sells the same game.
Unlinking the wrong account
Stop before unlinking if your progress is stored on a publisher account. Capture the account ID, linked platforms and recovery email, then contact the publisher through its official support channel. Repeated unlinking can make a profile difficult or impossible to attach elsewhere.
How to decide whether buying again is unavoidable
Buying the destination version is normally the cleanest option when the stores are different and no written cross-buy entitlement exists. Before paying, compare the cost of the new edition with the value of your saved progress, DLC and online items. A sale price or bundle may reduce the duplication, but a discount does not change the underlying ownership rule.
If the game supports cross-progression, buy the destination copy only after linking the correct publisher account and confirming that the destination version recognizes your profile. If it supports neither cross-save nor cloud transfer, plan for a new save even when the game itself is familiar.
Bottom line
Digital games generally stay with the storefront account that sold them. Same-family console replacement, Xbox Play Anywhere, publisher cross-buy and cross-progression are specific exceptions that must be verified for the exact game, edition and platform pair. Treat the license, save data, DLC and online profile as separate questions; that approach prevents both an unnecessary second purchase and the loss of progress when you change hardware.
