Can you trade in games and consoles at EB Games? A guide to eligibility and value in Australia

Yes. EB Games Australia accepts eligible games, consoles and accessories through its Trade & Save program. Your item must meet rules on Australian compatibility, classification, condition, completeness and account or network status. The amount shown online is only an estimate; a store employee makes the final decision after inspecting the item.

Trade-ins normally give you EB Games store credit rather than a guaranteed cash payment. Identification, minimum age and payment rules depend on the state or territory where you trade. Use the current Trade & Save estimator for a guide, then take the hardware or software to a local store for the binding assessment.

What EB Games accepts

EB Games Australia says you can trade consoles, games and accessories you no longer want and apply the resulting credit to another purchase. Its published format list covers current, previous-generation and selected retro systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Category Formats listed by EB Games
Current and recent games Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One and Nintendo 3DS
PlayStation retro PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PSP and PS Vita
Xbox retro Original Xbox and Xbox 360
Nintendo retro NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Game Boy, Wii, Wii U and DS
Sega retro Sega Master System and Mega Drive
Other hardware Consoles and accessories, subject to inspection and local store acceptance

The list describes formats the retailer handles, not a promise that every title, model, colour or accessory will be accepted. Availability of a quote and the final offer still depend on the specific item and its condition.

EB Games Australia, “What can I trade?”

Game eligibility: what to check before you visit

Australian classification and compatibility

A game should carry an Australian classification, work with Australian systems and contain English-language content. An imported disc or cartridge can therefore be refused even when the hardware itself is genuine, because regional compatibility and classification are part of the eligibility test.

Cases, covers and rating labels

EB Games may still accept a game with scratches or without its original case, cover or display insert, or correct rating label. Those omissions can trigger a refurbishment charge that lowers the advertised promotion or the trade value. Bring the original packaging whenever possible, especially for a title that was supplied with a case, manual or other insert.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Retro packaging

Retro games have a stricter packaging expectation: the original case or box is required. A cartridge or disc without the appropriate retro box may not qualify even if it runs correctly.

Copies that cannot be traded

  • Illegal, burnt or pirated copies
  • Demo and promotional copies
  • Cracked, chipped or physically broken media
  • Items that are internally incomplete, modified or damaged beyond repair

Store staff can refuse an item that fails these checks. Do not assume that a disc that starts once, or a cartridge with a damaged shell, will be treated as resalable.

Console eligibility: condition, completeness and account status

Australian, working and unmodified

For a normal console trade, EB Games expects an Australian model that is working, complete and unmodified. “Complete” generally means the parts needed to sell the unit as a usable package: the console, its required power supply, the matching controller or controllers, and any model-specific dock, cable or adapter. Missing pieces can reduce the value or prevent acceptance.

Online bans and parental controls

The console must not be banned or locked from the relevant online network. Remove parental controls before bringing it in. A device that remains tied to an online account, has an activation lock or cannot be reset may be rejected because a later customer could not use it normally.

Non-working or incomplete hardware

EB Games says it may consider a console that is not working, incomplete or not resalable, but this is discretionary. A store can inspect such hardware and decide that it is unsuitable, or offer a different amount from the online estimate. Treat “may consider” as an invitation to ask, not as an entitlement to a trade.

Erase your data and remove your account

Back up saved games, screenshots, clips and other data before handing over a console or memory device. Sign out of personal accounts, disable activation or device locks, and perform the console’s factory reset where the manufacturer provides one. EB Games states that stored content has no commercial value and that ownership of stored material is forfeited when the console or memory device is traded. Keep any removable storage that you do not intend to surrender.

How EB Games sets the value

The estimator is not a guaranteed quote

EB Games does not publish a permanent price list for every game, console model, storage size and accessory. Its online Trade & Save tool produces an estimate based on the item selected and assumptions about its condition. Those estimates assume resalable condition, are not guaranteed and can change on the next calendar day.

The final offer is set in store after staff assess condition, completeness and resalability. A scratched disc, missing controller, damaged case or account lock can therefore produce a lower amount than the figure you saw online. An employee may also decline the item altogether.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

EB World membership affects the displayed amount

The Trade & Save terms state that online quotes are displayed at the “up to” value for EB World Level IV members. Signing in gives a more individual estimate that reflects your membership level. The membership reference is a ceiling for the displayed estimate, not a promise that every customer receives that amount at the counter.

Why the number changes

Values can change because the estimator is time-sensitive, because the selected condition does not match the item you bring, or because the store finds missing or non-resalable components. Stock demand and current promotions can also affect the amount available on a particular day. EB Games’ support team does not provide trade values directly; it directs customers to the Trade & Save tool or a store.

Take a screenshot or printout of the estimate and note the date. Use it as a guide or practical ceiling for planning, not as a guaranteed payment.

Nintendo Switch 32GB Video Game Console - Black (HAC-001) / CONSOLE ONLY (Renewed)
  • 6.2" LCD Screen

Step-by-step: trading a game or console

  1. Identify the exact item. Note the platform, edition, region, storage capacity and included accessories. For a bundle, list every component separately so you know what must be present.
  2. Prepare the item. Clean dust and fingerprints, remove stickers that can be removed safely, and gather the original case, box, cables, power supply, dock and controllers. Do not attempt a risky repair or modification to make an item appear complete.
  3. Remove personal access. Back up data, sign out of accounts, disable activation or network locks, remove parental controls and factory-reset the console. Keep personal memory cards or drives unless you intend to trade them.
  4. Check the Trade & Save estimator. Select the exact format and condition. Sign in if you have an EB World account, because the displayed “up to” amount is tied to membership level. Record the result and the date.
  5. Check your state’s requirements. Confirm that you meet the minimum age and bring the accepted identification listed for your jurisdiction. Requirements are not identical across Australia.
  6. Visit a store with the item and ID. Staff inspect the media or hardware, verify completeness and test whether it is suitable for resale. Tell the associate about any defect rather than selecting a better condition online.
  7. Review the store offer. The associate tells you the store-credit amount. You can accept it and use the credit in store, or decline and keep the item. If the amount is lower than the estimate, ask which condition or missing component caused the adjustment.
  8. Complete the transaction record. A trade requires staff to witness a government-issued photo ID and record identifying details. Keep the receipt or transaction confirmation.

Age and identification rules by state and territory

EB Games publishes different minimum ages for trade transactions. These are the published minimums, not a universal Australian rule:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Jurisdiction Published minimum age Important condition
Queensland 17 Meet the store’s identification requirements.
New South Wales 16 Meet the store’s identification requirements.
Victoria 18 Meet the store’s identification requirements.
Western Australia 16 Under-16s must be accompanied by a consenting adult.
Tasmania 18 Meet the store’s identification requirements.
South Australia 16 Meet the store’s identification requirements.
Northern Territory 18 Meet the store’s identification requirements.
Australian Capital Territory 18 Meet the store’s identification requirements.

Accepted identification differs by jurisdiction. Depending on where you trade, documents can include a driver licence, passport, Australian government photo ID or tertiary student ID. Some jurisdictions also allow a specified combination of non-photo documents and evidence of address. Check the current state-specific list before travelling, because an otherwise valid document may not satisfy the local combination rule.

EB Games’ privacy policy says staff must witness a government-issued photo ID for a trade and record details such as your name, address and ID reference number. Bring the original document, not merely a photograph on your phone, unless the store’s current rules explicitly allow an electronic credential.

Credit, cash and gift-card restrictions

The standard process is store credit: an associate assesses the item, tells you the credit amount and allows you to use that credit in the store. Payment options vary by state and transaction, so ask the store before you rely on a cash outcome.

Western Australia has a specific restriction: EB Games says trading for cash is not permitted there, and credit cannot be provided through a gift card. If you are in Western Australia, plan on using the credit under the store’s stated process rather than expecting cash or a gift-card substitute.

How to improve the offer without misrepresenting the item

  • Bring the complete original package. Include every required cable, controller, dock, power supply, case, box and insert. Missing accessories are an immediate reason for a deduction.
  • Clean carefully. Wipe surfaces and discs with appropriate materials. Do not use abrasive products or open a sealed console; a modification can make the item ineligible.
  • Make the hardware usable. Charge wireless controllers, remove account locks and reset the system so staff can test it promptly.
  • Choose the honest condition. Selecting “resalable” online when the item is cracked or incomplete creates an estimate that the store cannot honour.
  • Trade before the estimate changes. Online values can change on the next calendar day. Save the dated estimate, but understand that the in-store inspection still controls.
  • Ask about current promotions. A promotion can change the value or the way credit is calculated, and a refurbishment charge may reduce the advertised deal.

Quantity limits and price matching

Multiple copies

EB Games limits multiple copies of the same or similar product to two per customer when the trade is presented as a personal collection. Larger or unusual quantities may require documentation, and the retailer can refuse the trade. If you are clearing a collection, sort duplicates and contact the store before arriving with a large load.

Best-trade-price matching

A best-trade-price match is narrow. The competing store must be in the same shopping centre or precinct, and the product and condition must match. Online retailers and private traders do not qualify. A price match cannot be combined with EB trade promotions. Bring evidence of the competing in-person offer if you believe the conditions are met, and ask the store to confirm eligibility before assuming the match will apply.

Should you trade or sell privately?

Trading is usually the simpler route when you want to convert unwanted games or hardware into credit during one store visit. You avoid photographing items, answering messages, arranging a meeting and waiting for a buyer. The trade-off is that the final amount is set for store credit and can be reduced for condition, missing parts or changing market demand.

A private sale can produce more money in some cases, particularly for complete, sought-after or unusual items, but it adds work and risk. You must set a price, handle enquiries, verify payment, package or meet safely and deal with returns or disputes. Compare the net amount you expect to receive privately with the value of immediate EB Games credit, then factor in your time and the payment rules in your state.

What to do when a trade is refused or valued lower than expected

The estimator is higher than the store offer

Ask the associate to identify the difference: a missing accessory, incorrect region, damaged case, disc scratches, a refurbishment charge, an online lock or a condition mismatch. If you can correct a reversible problem, such as removing an account lock or bringing the original cable from home, ask whether the item can be reassessed. Do not expect the original estimate to remain available after the calendar day changes.

The console will not sign out or reset

Take the console home, recover the account through the manufacturer’s official process and remove the device from your account list. A store cannot safely resell hardware that remains activation-locked or contains your personal data.

The game is imported or lacks a case

Confirm whether it carries Australian classification and works with Australian systems. For a current title, a missing case may result in a deduction; for retro software, the case or box is required. If the item fails the regional or packaging rule, a private sale to a buyer who understands the format may be the only practical alternative.

You do not have the required ID or are under the minimum age

Do not make a wasted trip. Check the identification list for your state and arrange for an eligible adult only where the published rule permits it, such as Western Australia’s requirement that an under-16 customer be accompanied by a consenting adult. A companion does not override a jurisdiction’s minimum age where the rule sets 16 or 18.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The store declines a damaged or modified item

EB Games can refuse hardware or software that is cracked, chipped, internally incomplete, modified, physically broken or damaged beyond repair. Ask whether the store has a recycling or disposal option, or consider a repair only when the cost and safety make sense; a repair does not guarantee future acceptance.

Practical checklist for trade day

  • Exact model, platform, region and edition identified
  • Original case or box, where required
  • All controllers, cables, power supplies, docks and adapters included
  • Disc or cartridge clean and free from cracks or chips
  • Console unmodified, functional and not network-banned
  • Parental controls, activation locks and personal accounts removed
  • Data backed up and personal storage retained or intentionally included
  • Current estimator result saved with its date
  • Original acceptable identification in hand
  • Duplicate quantity checked against the two-copy limit
  • Expectation set for store credit rather than a guaranteed cash payment

Bottom line

EB Games Australia does accept many games, consoles and accessories, including current systems and a substantial range of retro formats. Your result depends less on the headline format than on Australian compatibility, packaging, working condition, completeness, account status and local trading rules. Use the estimator to plan, prepare the item honestly and treat the in-store inspection as the only final valuation.
