It may be the last location the phone sent, a newer location relayed by a nearby device through an offline-finding network, or, on certain supported Pixel phones, a location reported for a limited time after shutdown. What works depends on the phone, its settings before it went missing, and whether other devices can detect it.
What a location result means
When a phone is off or out of battery, a location service may still show information, but there are different reasons why:

- Last known location: The most recent location the phone sent before it went offline. It is not proof that the phone remains there.
- Offline-network location: A nearby participating device detects the missing phone over Bluetooth and relays an approximate location.
- Limited powered-off finding: A small set of supported devices can be located for a short time after shutdown under specific conditions.
Check the device’s status and the time associated with its location, if shown. A stale pin should be treated as a lead, not a live position.

Check the Find My app on another Apple device or open Find Devices on iCloud.com. Apple’s UK support guidance distinguishes the two: Find My may show a device’s last known location in the app for up to seven days, while iCloud.com may show it for up to 24 hours when the device is offline. If a location has not been sent through the Find My network after seven days, the app shows “No location found.”

These are availability windows for a last-known location, not promises that the iPhone can be tracked live for that long. Apple says iCloud.com shows the device’s location when it is powered on and connected to a network. Its Find My overview also describes the Find My network: nearby Apple devices can use Bluetooth to detect a device or accessory and report an approximate location to its owner. This offline-network feature is not evidence that a phone with no power broadcasts indefinitely.
Find My and the relevant settings must have been configured before the phone went missing. If the result says “Offline” or is identified as a last known location, do not assume the phone is still at that point.

What Find Hub can show for Android
Google’s Find Hub can show an encrypted recent location from when an Android device was last online if “Find your offline devices” was enabled. Google offers offline-finding options that can store recent locations without network participation or use the network in busy places or everywhere. Network-based offline finding requires a PIN, pattern, or password. See Google’s guidance on getting ready to find a lost Android device.

Supported Pixel phones are a limited exception
Google specifically says supported Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and Pixel 10 series phones can be locatable for several hours after being turned off or running out of battery. This requires offline finding configured to use the network, with Bluetooth and Location enabled when the phone shuts down. The feature should not be generalized to every Android phone.

Why an Android phone may still be unfindable
Google cautions that Find Hub may be unable to locate a device if it has no power or is turned off, lacks mobile or Wi-Fi connectivity, is damaged, or is in airplane mode or has Wi-Fi turned off. That warning is compatible with the Pixel capability: powered-off finding is limited to supported devices and configurations, not a guarantee for Android generally. Labels and settings can vary by software version and region.

- Check the official service. For iPhone, open Find My on a trusted Apple device or go to iCloud.com/find. For Android, use the Find Hub app or its web experience and sign in with the Google Account on the missing phone.
- Select the device and assess the result. Note whether it appears online or offline and check the location time or status if available. Treat an old location as the last reported point, not a live position.
- Secure the phone through the service. Use Lost Mode or Mark as Lost on iPhone, or Mark as lost/Secure Device in Find Hub, where available. Follow the account service’s prompts for the controls it offers.
- If it cannot be found, check again if it may reconnect. Keep your account secure and contact your mobile provider about protecting or deactivating service. Google advises contacting the provider if possible when a device cannot be found.
These services depend on prior setup and on the device or network being able to provide a location. They cannot overcome every case of missing configuration, damage, loss of power, or connectivity failure.
