Yes—generally, you can take a 10,000mAh lithium-ion power bank on a plane. Put it in your cabin baggage, never in checked luggage, verify its watt-hour (Wh) rating, and check the operating airline’s current policy. From March 27, 2026, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) rules limit passengers to two power banks and prohibit recharging a power bank during a flight.
What you need to know before leaving for the airport
A 10,000mAh portable charger is normally far below the energy limit used for passenger spare batteries, but the capacity printed in milliamp-hours does not by itself establish the battery’s watt-hours. Security and airline staff may rely on the Wh marking, so read the label before packing.

| Question | Practical answer |
|---|---|
| Where should it travel? | In your carry-on or personal item, accessible in the passenger cabin. |
| Can it go in checked baggage? | No. A power bank is treated as a spare lithium-ion battery and must not be placed in checked luggage. |
| What capacity matters? | Watt-hours (Wh), not mAh alone. Use the printed Wh value when available. |
| How many may you carry? | ICAO’s rules effective March 27, 2026, limit each passenger to two power banks. An airline can impose a stricter rule. |
| Can you recharge it in flight? | No under the ICAO restriction. ICAO also recommends not using one power bank to recharge another portable electronic device onboard. |
Why 10,000mAh does not tell you the watt-hours
Milliamp-hours measure electrical charge. Aviation limits are expressed in watt-hours, which account for voltage as well as charge. The conversion is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWh = (mAh ÷ 1,000) × voltage
Divide 10,000mAh by 1,000 and you have 10 amp-hours. The final Wh number depends on the battery voltage printed on the unit. If a label states 3.7V, the calculation is 10Ah × 3.7V = 37Wh. That is an illustration, not a universal rating: different designs, cells and labeling practices can produce a different value.

Look first for a line marked “Wh,” “watt-hours” or “energy.” If it is absent, use the voltage and capacity printed on the power bank and keep the calculation available on your phone or on a note. Do not assume that every product sold as 10,000mAh has exactly the same Wh rating.
FAA passenger limits for lithium-ion power banks
For flights covered by U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) passenger guidance, a power bank is a spare rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The baseline limits are:
| Battery energy | Passenger treatment under FAA guidance | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 100Wh | Allowed in carry-on baggage, subject to airline rules. | Keep it in the cabin and protect the terminals. |
| 101Wh through 160Wh | Requires the operating airline’s approval. | Obtain approval before travel; do not rely on airport staff to authorize it at the gate. |
| Over 160Wh | Not permitted for passengers under the FAA’s passenger guidance. | Do not bring it to the airport. |
A typical 10,000mAh unit with a clearly stated Wh rating is expected to fall below 100Wh, but the label remains the authority for your particular device. Airlines and countries can apply additional requirements, so the FAA thresholds are a baseline rather than a guarantee that every operator will accept every model.
ICAO’s rules effective March 27, 2026
The International Civil Aviation Organization announced that its updated specifications became effective on March 27, 2026. ICAO states: “Following the improvements agreed today, these devices will now be limited to two per passenger, and passengers will be prohibited from recharging them during flights.”
The two-device maximum
The two-power-bank limit is absolute under ICAO’s addendum. It applies regardless of how many other spare batteries you carry and regardless of each power bank’s energy capacity. Count power banks as separate devices; do not assume that combining them in one pouch changes the limit.
Charging and using a power bank onboard
You must not recharge a power bank during the flight. ICAO also recommends against using one power bank to recharge another portable electronic device while onboard. An airline may give more specific instructions about whether a passenger may connect a phone or tablet, so follow the crew’s direction and the operator’s written policy.

- What You Get: Anker Zolo Power Bank (10K, 30W), 5.4-inch (13.7 cm) built-in USB-C cable, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
ICAO does not prescribe one universal stowage location in the addendum. Do not infer that every airline requires an overhead bin, seat pocket or under-seat position. Keep the unit where your airline and cabin crew direct, and make sure it remains protected from crushing or accidental activation.
How to pack a 10,000mAh power bank safely
- Read the label. Record the Wh value, voltage and capacity. If Wh is not printed, calculate it using the formula above.
- Check the condition. Do not pack a unit that is swollen, cracked, leaking, unusually hot, sparking or otherwise damaged.
- Prevent short circuits. Keep exposed terminals from touching keys, coins, chargers or other metal objects. Use the manufacturer’s case, a battery case or a protective pouch.
- Place it in cabin baggage. Put it in a carry-on or personal item that stays with you, rather than in a suitcase intended for the hold.
- Keep it accessible. Security staff or airline personnel may need to inspect it. Avoid burying it beneath dense layers of clothing or equipment.
- Count your devices. From March 27, 2026, make sure you have no more than two power banks per passenger, including spares packed in another bag.
- Review the airline’s live policy. Check the carrier operating each flight, including a codeshare segment, shortly before departure. Save any required approval for a battery over 100Wh.
What happens if your carry-on is checked at the gate?
If an airline takes your cabin bag at the gate and loads it into the aircraft hold, remove the power bank first. Keep it with you in the cabin. This applies even when the bag began the trip as an approved carry-on; the change in baggage location creates the safety problem.
Tell the gate agent that the bag contains a spare lithium-ion battery and ask where to place the power bank while you board. Do not leave it inside a gate-checked suitcase and hope it will be found later.
Can you use a power bank during the flight?
The clearest 2026 restriction is that you cannot recharge the power bank itself in flight. ICAO further recommends against using one to charge another portable electronic device. Because airlines can set tighter operating procedures, treat the crew’s announcement and the carrier’s policy as controlling.
Before boarding, charge the power bank and your devices on the ground. Once onboard, do not plug the power bank into an aircraft outlet, USB port or another battery. If the crew tells you to disconnect a device, do so immediately, even if another passenger appears to be using a similar setup.
Damaged, recalled or unsafe batteries
FAA guidance says batteries that are damaged or recalled and likely to create dangerous heat or sparks must not be carried unless they have been made safe or removed. A bulging case, torn cable, burnt smell, liquid leakage, repeated overheating or visible impact damage is a reason to leave the unit at home.

Airline and international differences
FAA guidance applies to U.S. passenger operations, while ICAO sets international standards that states and airlines implement. IATA traveler guidance likewise advises passengers to check the specific operator’s rules. The carrier operating your flight may limit the number of batteries, require a particular cabin location, prohibit use during certain phases of flight or refuse a device whose Wh marking is unclear.
Check every airline on your itinerary, not only the company that sold the ticket. A connecting flight can be subject to a different operator’s baggage policy. Rules can also change after you book, so verify them close to departure and allow time to remove or replace a non-compliant unit.

Choosing a travel power bank
If you are buying or replacing one for air travel, prioritize compliance features rather than headline capacity:
- A printed Wh rating: It lets staff verify the energy limit without guessing the voltage.
- A capacity below the applicable threshold: Staying at or below 100Wh avoids the airline-approval category in FAA guidance, although operator rules still apply.
- Intact construction: Reject units with swelling, cracks, loose ports or heat damage.
- Terminal protection: A covered design or supplied pouch reduces the chance of a short circuit.
- Clear manufacturer identification: Illegible or missing markings can create delays at security or the gate.
Do not choose a model solely because its package says 10,000mAh. Confirm the Wh marking on the actual power bank, since packaging and marketing descriptions may not provide the information an airline requests.
Common travel situations and the right response
“My power bank only lists 10,000mAh.”
Find the voltage printed near the capacity and calculate Wh. If neither voltage nor Wh appears, contact the manufacturer before flying or choose a unit with a clear Wh label. Do not invent a voltage from the USB output rating.

“I have three small power banks.”
Under ICAO’s rule effective March 27, 2026, three exceeds the two-per-passenger limit, even if each unit is well below 100Wh. Pack no more than two unless the operating airline publishes an even stricter limit.

“The airline wants to check my carry-on.”
Remove every power bank before surrendering the bag. Keep the devices in your personal item or another cabin bag that remains with you.
“The power bank became hot in my hotel.”
Disconnect it from any device, move away from flammable materials if it is safe to do so, and do not fly with it. Follow the manufacturer’s safety and disposal instructions. Heat that is unusual, persistent or accompanied by swelling is not a normal travel condition.
“Can I use the aircraft’s USB socket to refill it?”
No. The ICAO restriction prohibits recharging a power bank during flight. Charge it before boarding and wait until you are off the aircraft.
A final preflight checklist
- Wh rating read or correctly calculated from the device’s own voltage and capacity.
- Power bank packed in cabin baggage, never checked baggage.
- No swelling, cracks, leaks, scorching, recall concern or other damage.
- Terminals covered or protected from metal objects.
- No more than two power banks per passenger under the ICAO rule effective March 27, 2026.
- Airline policies checked for every operating carrier and connection.
- Power bank fully charged before boarding; no plan to recharge it in flight.
Meeting these checks gives you the normal path to carrying a 10,000mAh power bank, while the operating airline retains the authority to apply its own current restrictions.
