Whether your text, attachments, formatting, tags, dates, links, and notebook structure survive depends on the source app, destination app, export format, platform, and features the destination can read. Export a backup, confirm the destination’s import route, test a representative batch, and keep the original until you have audited the new library.
What “without losing your notes” really means
A migration can preserve the words in a note while changing or dropping other parts of it. Treat these as separate layers of fidelity:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Core content: typed text, headings, links, and dates.
- Rich content: photos, scans, PDFs, audio, drawings, tables, checklists, and other attachments.
- Organization: notebooks, folders, nested pages, labels, tags, and pinned or archived status.
- Sharing data: collaborators, permissions, comments, and shared links.
- App-specific behavior: reminders, backlinks, databases, templates, handwriting recognition, or search indexes.
The source app may include all of this in an export, yet the destination may support only part of it. Google Keep, for example, can export labels, collaborators, note color, pinned or archived state, and attachments; that export does not prove another app will recreate each field. Apple explicitly warns that unsupported Evernote attachments or features are not imported into Notes. A successful file transfer is therefore not the same as a faithful reconstruction.
Plan the move before exporting
Inventory the content you cannot afford to lose
Make a short inventory of the features you actually use. Open several old, recent, shared, and unusually complex notes rather than checking only a plain text example. Record whether you rely on:

- Images, scanned documents, PDFs, voice recordings, videos, or drawings.
- Tables, checklists, headings, inline links, code blocks, or handwriting.
- Tags, labels, colors, pinned notes, archived notes, reminders, and dates.
- Notebook, folder, page, or subpage hierarchy.
- Collaborators, comments, permissions, and links to other notes.
- Search-dependent information such as OCR text inside scans.
This list is a risk register, not a promise that any particular exporter will expose every field. Mark each feature as essential, useful, or disposable. The essential list determines which sample notes you test first and what you must inspect after import.
Count and classify the library
Write down the approximate number of notes, notebooks or folders, shared items, and large attachments. If the source app offers search filters, use them to identify notes with attachments, checklists, tags, or unusual formats. A count gives you a baseline for the final audit; classification helps you choose a test batch that represents real use rather than an easy demo.
Create an independent backup
Export before changing accounts, deleting notebooks, or cancelling a subscription. Store the export somewhere separate from the source account, such as a local drive or another controlled storage location. Keep the original account available until you have checked the destination.
Evernote export
Evernote’s desktop app for Mac or Windows can export notes or notebooks as ENEX or HTML. Its help documentation says export is not available in Evernote Web, so use the desktop application for this step. ENEX is generally the more structured route when a destination supports it; HTML is useful as a readable archive and for destinations that accept web pages. Exporting creates a backup copy, but it does not guarantee that another app will interpret every field.
Notion export
Notion can export workspace content and offers options such as including subpages and an index or sitemap in the downloaded package. Large workspace exports may take a long time to process. Treat the download as an archive until you confirm that your chosen destination can import its actual file types and hierarchy.

Google Keep export
Google’s Takeout-style export can include text and list items, voice recordings, drawings, images, note color, pinned and archived state, collaborators, and labels. Work or school accounts may have some data unavailable for download. Save the export intact; do not assume its metadata will map automatically to folders, tags, or sharing controls elsewhere.
OneNote export
Microsoft documents downloading or importing a copy of a notebook to a PC or Mac and provides separate PDF-export guidance for OneNote 2016 for Windows. Check the exact OneNote edition and operating system before selecting a route. A PDF can preserve appearance for reference, but it may not preserve editable sections, pages, or tags in the destination.

Check the destination’s real import route
Read the destination’s current support documentation before converting anything. Confirm the accepted file extension, where the command appears, whether import runs on desktop, web, or mobile, and what the documentation says about limitations.
| Destination or route | Documented formats or method | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Notes on Mac | TXT, RTF, RTFD, HTML, and ENEX through Notes’ import function | Unsupported Evernote attachments or features are not imported. The listed import route is for Mac. |
| Evernote | Settings → Import accepts PDF, TXT, HTML, Markdown, and DOCX; desktop export produces ENEX or HTML | Mobile import is unavailable according to Evernote’s help page. Dragging a non-ENEX file into the note list creates an attachment rather than editable note content. |
| Notion | PDF, HTML, Markdown, DOCX, TXT, CSV, ZIP, plus third-party importers including Evernote | Imports are available on desktop and web, not mobile. Notion advises reviewing its “What imports, What doesn’t import, and Limitations” information first. |
| Google Keep | Use the Google data-export process to obtain notes and listed attachments and metadata | The export description does not establish that another app will reproduce every field. |
| OneNote | Download or import a notebook copy on PC or Mac; PDF export guidance exists for OneNote 2016 for Windows | The correct procedure depends on the OneNote version and platform. |
Two apps may both claim to support HTML or PDF while interpreting them differently. Check whether the destination creates editable notes, individual attachments, a flat archive, or a database. Also verify whether subpages, folders, labels, and shared content have a documented mapping.
Run a representative test migration
- Choose a small batch. Include a plain text note, a note with headings and links, an image or scan, a PDF or audio attachment if you use one, a checklist, a tagged note, and a note from a deep folder or notebook.
- Export only that batch first. Preserve the source copies and record which files belong to the test.
- Import using the documented workflow. Do not substitute a drag-and-drop shortcut if the vendor says to use Settings or an importer.
- Compare the results field by field. Check text, formatting, links, attachment opening, dates, labels, hierarchy, and sharing status where relevant.
- Test search and editing. Open imported files, edit a copy, search for distinctive words, and confirm that attachments are stored as usable files rather than unreadable placeholders.
- Decide whether the loss is acceptable. If an essential feature is missing, stop and change the route, destination, or preservation strategy before importing the full library.
A small test cannot prove that every edge case will work, but it exposes obvious incompatibilities while the original remains untouched.

Documented routes and how to use them
Evernote to Apple Notes
On a Mac, export the required Evernote notes or notebooks as ENEX or HTML, then use Apple Notes’ import command and select the supported file. Apple lists ENEX, HTML, TXT, RTF, and RTFD as import formats. Inspect every imported notebook, especially notes containing unsupported attachments or Evernote-specific features; Apple says those elements are not imported. Keep the ENEX or HTML archive even if the visible text looks correct.
Into Evernote
In Evernote’s desktop app, open Settings → Import and select PDF, TXT, HTML, Markdown, or DOCX files. The documented workflow converts these files into editable notes. If you drag a non-ENEX file directly into the note list, Evernote treats it as an attachment, so use the Import settings when conversion is the goal. Evernote’s guidance recommends exporting Apple Notes and OneNote as PDF for this route and exporting Notion pages as HTML with subpages included. The mobile app does not provide the documented import function.
Into Notion
Use Notion’s desktop or web importer for PDF, HTML, Markdown, DOCX, TXT, CSV, or ZIP, or use its listed third-party importers when applicable. Before a full run, read Notion’s information about what imports, what does not import, and the limitations for your file type. Exported workspace packages can include subpages and an index or sitemap, but an archive structure is not automatically a working Notion hierarchy in every other app.
Moving Google Keep notes
Request the Google Keep data export and inspect the resulting text, lists, images, drawings, voice recordings, labels, colors, pinned or archived state, and collaborator information. Then determine which of those fields your destination accepts. Plan a manual reconciliation for anything that has no equivalent, especially collaborators, reminders, and labels. If the account is managed by a school or employer, confirm that policy has not restricted the data available for download.
Moving OneNote notebooks
Follow Microsoft’s instructions for downloading or importing a notebook copy on the relevant PC or Mac. If you are using OneNote 2016 for Windows and choose PDF, treat it as a visual reference unless your destination explicitly converts PDF pages into editable notes. Verify the edition first because OneNote procedures differ across versions.

Using internet accounts with Apple Notes
If your notes already live in an internet account such as iCloud, Google, Yahoo, or AOL, Apple says you can access them in Notes by adding that account. This can avoid a one-by-one file migration for that specific situation. It is account access rather than a universal export solution, so confirm that the account remains connected and that the destination’s sync and retention settings meet your needs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Audit the full import before deleting anything
After the test succeeds, migrate the remaining notes and perform a structured audit:
- Compare source and destination note counts, notebook or folder counts, and the number of shared items.
- Open samples from every folder, including the oldest, newest, largest, and most recently edited notes.
- Search for distinctive words that should occur in both libraries.
- Open every attachment type you depend on and check that files are complete, readable, and editable when expected.
- Verify links, dates, checklists, tags, labels, colors, pinned or archived status, and hierarchy.
- Check collaborator access separately; a copied note is not automatically a shared note with the same permissions.
- Export a few imported notes again, if the destination allows it, to confirm you are not locked into a format you cannot archive.
Keep the source account and independent export until this audit is complete and you have a recovery decision. Do not rely on a single count: a note can exist in the destination while its attachment, checklist state, or sharing permissions are missing.
What to do when something is missing
Formatting changed but text survived
Keep the original export as a read-only archive and decide whether the formatting is essential. For high-value documents, retain the source HTML, ENEX, PDF, or other original file alongside the imported note. Recreate only the formatting that affects meaning, such as headings, table relationships, or task status.

Attachments are absent or unreadable
Return to the source and export the affected notes in another supported format if available. Apple’s warning about unsupported Evernote attachments is a concrete example of why this matters. If no compatible route exists, preserve the original export and store the attachment files separately with clear filenames and a note-to-file index.

Hierarchy or labels flattened
Use the source inventory to rebuild folders or tags in batches. A CSV or HTML export may retain names that can be used to reconstruct organization even when the destination cannot import it automatically. Do not delete the source until you can find important notes using the destination’s own search and navigation.
Shared notes lost their collaboration settings
Recreate sharing deliberately and verify each collaborator’s access. Exported content can contain collaborator information without carrying over live permissions. Treat the migrated copy as private until access has been checked.
How to choose a destination for migration
Compare candidates on five practical axes rather than choosing by interface alone:
Recommended Free Tools
- Source-format support: Does it accept the exact ENEX, HTML, Markdown, PDF, or other file your source can produce?
- Preservation detail: Which headings, links, dates, labels, hierarchy, and metadata are documented as retained?
- Rich-content handling: Can it open, edit, and search your attachments, scans, tables, audio, and checklists?
- Import availability: Is the importer available on your platform, or does it require a Mac, Windows desktop app, or web browser?
- Future portability: Can you export again in a documented, broadly readable format if you switch later?
Give each candidate a pass, caution, or fail for the features marked essential in your inventory. A destination that imports fewer formats may still be safer if it preserves the specific structure and attachments you use; a destination with many import options may still flatten the fields that matter to you.
A practical go/no-go checklist
- Have you exported a copy outside the source account?
- Have you confirmed the destination’s accepted format and required platform?
- Have you tested ordinary and feature-rich notes?
- Have you checked attachments, links, dates, labels, hierarchy, and sharing?
- Have you recorded what the destination cannot preserve?
- Can you keep the original and export until the audit is finished?
- Do you have a readable archive for anything the destination omits?
If any answer is no, postpone deletion and finish that step first. Switching apps is manageable when you treat it as a controlled data conversion, not a single button press.
