Apple says the U.S. program is ending. Existing members can continue their Citizens One loan through its stated term, while Apple lists other ways to obtain a next iPhone, including Apple Upgrade, Apple Card Monthly Installments for eligible members, buying outright, and carrier financing.
A wireless-service plan and a carrier’s phone-installment agreement are separate. Changing service does not automatically pay off the carrier phone, move its promotional credits, unlock it, or transfer the balance to Apple.

What “switching” actually involves
The phrase “carrier iPhone plan” can describe two different contracts:

- Device financing: monthly payments for the handset, often combined with promotional bill credits and an unlock policy.
Apple’s former iPhone Upgrade Program was a separate Apple-arranged device loan. It did not replace your wireless service. You still had to activate the financed iPhone with an eligible carrier, and the carrier could charge its own activation or service fee.

Therefore, moving your number from a carrier plan to another service arrangement is not the same as moving the phone loan. Your carrier agreement controls the remaining balance, promotional-credit conditions, early-payoff rules, and unlock requirements. Apple’s public materials do not calculate an individual customer’s payoff or determine that customer’s credit eligibility.
Can a new U.S. customer enroll in the iPhone Upgrade Program?
Apple’s current U.S. iPhone Upgrade Program page says the program is ending. Apple’s July 2026 announcement also describes the end of the U.S. iPhone Upgrade Program and iPhone Payments. That means an article or store page that tells a new customer to apply for a fresh 24-month iPhone Upgrade Program loan is out of date.
The ending program and an existing loan are different matters. If you already have a Citizens One agreement, Apple says you can continue making the scheduled payments through the loan’s stated term. The program’s end does not require you to stop paying, return a phone immediately, or change your carrier account.

What existing members should do
- Keep the existing loan current. Do not cancel direct debits or stop payments because the program is ending. Your Citizens One agreement remains governed by its original terms.
- Check your Apple account status. Apple provides account steps for existing members who are choosing a next device. Some transitions require assistance in an Apple Store.
- Review your carrier account separately. Record the remaining device balance, the amount and end date of every promotional credit, the service plan required to retain those credits, and the carrier’s unlock policy.
- Choose a new payment route. Apple identifies Apple Upgrade, Apple Card Monthly Installments for eligible current members, paying in full, and carrier financing as the available paths it lists for a next iPhone.
- Keep the old and new obligations separate until confirmed. A new Apple arrangement does not automatically settle a carrier balance, and a carrier trade-in does not automatically satisfy an Apple loan.
Apple’s current alternatives
| Option | What you pay for | Ownership or return | Carrier and lock considerations | Approval or eligibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Upgrade | A lease offered with Klarna; payment amount and term depend on the approved offer. | Leased phone; compare the lease’s total payments, early-termination cost, and return or upgrade conditions before accepting. | Apple’s 2026 announcement says an eligible carrier must be selected from AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon. Prepaid service is excluded. Apple says leased iPhones are unlocked, subject to carrier terms. | Lease eligibility and approval apply. |
| Apple Card Monthly Installments | Monthly payments through Apple Card for eligible transitions and purchases. | Financing arrangement rather than the former Upgrade Program loan; review the current installment terms. | Confirm activation and carrier details during checkout. | Apple specifically identifies this route for eligible current iPhone Upgrade Program members. Some transitions require in-store help, so do not assume every new customer qualifies. |
| Pay in full | The entire purchase price at checkout. | You own the iPhone immediately. | Apple’s buying guidance describes iPhones purchased directly from Apple as unlocked; verify the current purchase and activation flow for your carrier. | No device-loan credit approval, although carrier service still has its own requirements. |
| Carrier financing | Monthly handset payments through the carrier, often tied to a service plan and promotional credits. | You receive the device under the carrier’s financing agreement; payoff and upgrade rights depend on that contract. | An iPhone financed through AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon may remain locked until paid in full. Check the carrier’s exact unlock policy. | Carrier credit approval and any required service commitment apply. |
How to decide before changing your carrier service
1. Find the real payoff amount
Open the carrier account or contact the carrier and ask for the exact remaining device balance as of the date you would switch. Ask whether paying early removes any future promotional credits. A bill showing a low monthly payment can conceal a substantial balance if credits are conditional on remaining with the carrier.
2. Identify every promotion attached to the phone
Trade-in offers, bill credits, and “free phone” promotions commonly depend on continued service and a specified installment period. Obtain the carrier’s written terms for what happens if you port your number, cancel the line, change plans, or pay the phone off early. The available Apple guidance does not establish the terms of any particular carrier promotion.
3. Check the lock status and unlock trigger
Apple’s buying guidance warns that a carrier-financed iPhone may remain locked until it is paid in full. Ask when the carrier will unlock the phone, whether the account must be current, and whether an unlock request is automatic or requires a form. Do not assume that moving the SIM or eSIM will remove a carrier lock.
Rank #2
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
4. Decide whether you need to keep the current number
Porting a number is a service-account action, not a loan transfer. Confirm that the carrier account remains active until the port completes, and ask the new provider how activation will work. Apple’s buying guidance describes assistance with activation and keeping an existing number and data when purchasing directly from Apple, but the carrier still controls account-level porting requirements.
5. Compare the complete cost, not only the monthly figure
For each option, total the device payments, required service payments, taxes, activation charges, insurance or AppleCare coverage, and any payoff caused by leaving early. For a lease, include the expected total lease payments and any cost for early termination or a phone that fails return-condition requirements.
A practical switch sequence
Use this order to avoid creating overlapping obligations or losing your number.
- Save account evidence. Download the latest carrier bill, device-installment schedule, promotion details, and any unlock status shown in your account. Keep the Apple or Citizens One loan information for an existing Upgrade Program phone.
- Ask for a dated payoff calculation. Request the gross device balance, the credits that would stop, taxes or fees due at payoff, and the date through which the quotation is valid. Ask the representative to explain whether a plan change has the same effect as cancellation.
- Confirm the new device’s eligibility. Before placing an order, verify the carrier selected for Apple Upgrade, whether prepaid service is excluded, whether Apple Card Monthly Installments is available to you, and what approval is required.
- Arrange activation or porting. Keep the old line active while a number port is in progress. Follow the receiving carrier’s instructions for eSIM or SIM activation, and do not close the old account solely because a new phone has shipped.
- Close or retain accounts deliberately. After activation, confirm the old service status, the final carrier bill, and the separate device-loan balance. If you returned a phone, retain the shipping and inspection confirmation until the lender or lessor shows the transaction as complete.
Questions to ask before accepting an offer
Ask Apple or the financing provider for the exact payment term, total expected payments, approval conditions, and what happens if you end the arrangement early. For Apple Upgrade, ask how an upgrade or return is initiated, which condition requirements apply, and what charges can arise if the device is damaged or inspection fails. “Unlocked” describes the device’s lock status; it does not guarantee compatibility with every network or waive a carrier’s activation requirements.
Ask the carrier whether the existing phone can be used after a port, when it will unlock, and whether an unpaid balance is accelerated when service ends. Confirm whether promotional credits are tied to a particular line, plan, or installment schedule. Request answers in writing or save the relevant account message so the final bill can be checked against the promise.

How the legacy iPhone Upgrade Program worked
The following terms describe existing U.S. accounts; they are not instructions for opening a new account now.
Rank #3
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
Loan structure
Apple’s U.S. legal terms described a 24-month, 0% APR installment loan for the iPhone’s retail price and selected AppleCare+ coverage. Citizens Bank, N.A., doing business as Citizens One, made the loan. A credit check was required, and the phone had to be activated with a new or existing eligible-carrier service plan.
Standard Upgrade Option
The published Upgrade Option required the equivalent of at least 12 installment payments, a loan in good standing, continuous AppleCare+, and a phone meeting Apple’s power, display, and damage conditions. Exercising the option required a new loan application and credit check, trading in the phone, and disabling Activation Lock.
Early upgrade route
Apple’s terms described an early route after six scheduled payments if the member paid enough to reach the equivalent of 12 payments. The requirement was about the amount paid, not simply the passage of six calendar months.
What an ordinary trade-in did not do
Trading or selling the financed iPhone outside the program’s Upgrade Option did not erase the remaining loan. The borrower remained responsible for that balance and could not then use the stated Upgrade Option for that phone. Treat a resale or ordinary trade-in as a separate transaction unless the lender confirms in writing that the loan has been settled.
Apple also warned that a phone returned through its online upgrade process could fail inspection. If it did not meet the repair or condition requirements, the original loan could be reinstated. Photograph the phone, back up your data, remove Activation Lock when instructed, and retain the shipment and inspection records.
What happens if you leave the carrier first?
You still owe a carrier device balance
Canceling wireless service usually ends or changes the service relationship; it does not, by itself, cancel a separate device-financing contract. The carrier may bill the remaining balance or require another remedy described in your agreement.
Rank #4
- Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
You may lose promotional credits
If monthly credits require a qualifying line or plan, ending service or changing to an ineligible plan can stop future credits. Ask for a payoff statement that shows both the gross device balance and the credits that would be forfeited.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The phone may remain locked
A financed phone can remain carrier-locked until the carrier’s stated conditions are met. A new Apple purchase can be unlocked while the old carrier phone remains locked; those are two different devices and two different policies.
Your number may be at risk if you cancel too soon
Keep the existing line active during a number port unless the receiving carrier tells you otherwise. Once the port completes, confirm that the old account is closed or changed as intended and that no separate device installment remains unpaid.
Common mistakes and safer fixes
- Mistake: assuming the old Upgrade Program is still open. Fix: Treat Apple’s current U.S. status as controlling and choose among the alternatives Apple currently lists.
- Mistake: confusing a service bill with a phone loan. Fix: Request separate statements for wireless service, device installments, and promotional credits.
- Mistake: expecting Apple to absorb a carrier payoff. Fix: Obtain the carrier’s payoff amount before ordering another phone.
- Mistake: assuming every Apple financing route is available to every customer. Fix: Verify Apple Card Monthly Installments or Apple Upgrade eligibility at the time of purchase.
- Mistake: selling an Upgrade Program phone and stopping payments. Fix: Continue the Citizens One payments unless Apple or the lender confirms that an approved upgrade or payoff has completed.
- Mistake: overlooking lease-return conditions. Fix: Read the Apple Upgrade return, damage, early-termination, and inspection rules before choosing a lease.
- Mistake: assuming “unlocked” means every carrier will accept the phone. Fix: Confirm the carrier’s network compatibility, activation requirements, and account eligibility.
Which path fits which situation?
| Your situation | Most relevant next step |
|---|---|
| You are not currently in Apple’s former program and want a new iPhone. | Compare Apple Upgrade, buying directly from Apple, and carrier financing. Do not plan on opening a new U.S. iPhone Upgrade Program loan. |
| You are an existing Upgrade Program member and your loan is current. | Continue the Citizens One agreement and review Apple’s account instructions for a next device. |
| Your carrier phone has promotional credits remaining. | Ask the carrier what credits disappear after a port, plan change, or early payoff before making any switch. |
| You want maximum flexibility to change carriers. | Compare an unlocked direct-from-Apple purchase or Apple’s current lease terms with the carrier’s lock and payoff rules. |
| You want the lowest immediate monthly payment. | Compare the full term, required service, credits, taxes, and early-exit costs rather than choosing by advertised payment alone. |
Country and date limits
This explanation applies to U.S. Apple materials checked on October 13, 2026. Apple’s program availability, financing partners, carrier list, lease terms, and eligibility rules can change. Readers outside the United States should check Apple’s local financing pages and the local carrier agreement; the U.S. ending-program status and Citizens One terms should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
Bottom line
A U.S. customer cannot use a new iPhone Upgrade Program enrollment to move a carrier-financed iPhone in 2026 because Apple says that program is ending. Separate the service plan from the handset loan, get the carrier’s payoff, credit, and unlock terms in writing, and then choose the Apple or carrier payment method whose ownership, flexibility, and total cost match your situation. Existing members should keep paying their Citizens One loan and follow Apple’s transition instructions rather than treating the program’s end as a cancellation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer my carrier-financed iPhone into Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program?
No new U.S. enrollment is available while Apple ends the program. A carrier device balance remains governed by the carrier agreement and is not automatically transferred to Apple.

What happens to my Citizens One loan if the program is ending?
Existing members can continue scheduled payments through the loan’s stated term. Do not stop payments or assume the program announcement cancels the agreement.
Will switching carriers erase my phone balance?
No. Changing wireless service does not automatically settle a separate device-installment contract. Ask the carrier for the payoff amount and the effect on promotional credits.
Will my carrier phone unlock when I port my number?
Not necessarily. Apple notes that carrier-financed phones may remain locked until paid in full. Confirm the carrier’s unlock trigger and procedure.
Is Apple Upgrade the same as the old iPhone Upgrade Program?
No. Apple Upgrade is described as a Klarna lease with its own approval, term, return, early-termination, and condition rules. The former program was a Citizens One 24-month, 0% APR loan.
Can I use Apple Card Monthly Installments instead?
Apple identifies that route for eligible current iPhone Upgrade Program members, and some transitions require in-store assistance. Check eligibility during the current purchase process.
Can I sell my old Upgrade Program iPhone to pay the loan?
An ordinary sale or trade-in does not automatically erase the remaining loan or preserve the stated Upgrade Option. Continue payments unless the lender confirms settlement.
What should I check before porting my number?
Confirm the device payoff, promotional credits that would be lost, unlock conditions, final bill, and the receiving carrier’s activation steps. Keep the old line active until the port completes.
The Bottom Line
In the United States, you cannot newly move a carrier-financed iPhone into Apple’s ending iPhone Upgrade Program. Separate wireless service from device financing, verify payoff, promotion, and unlock terms with the carrier, and compare Apple Upgrade, eligible Apple Card Monthly Installments, an outright purchase, and carrier financing. Existing members should keep their Citizens One loan current and follow Apple’s transition instructions.
