Sometimes, but there is no universal switch. LinkedIn offers a setting for future content-generating AI training; X has a control for public data and Grok interactions; Pinterest documents an opt-out for Pinterest Canvas; and Meta describes an objection form for people in the EU. Each control has a different scope, and opting out does not necessarily undo training that has already happened.

What “AI training” means on these platforms

Platforms do not all mean the same thing when they discuss using member data to train AI. Some policies cover content-generating models; others distinguish those from recommendation systems, personalization, or a named product. The controls below apply only to the purposes and data categories each platform describes.

Training data also differs from information used when you actively interact with an AI feature. For example, Meta says private messages with friends and family are not used unless someone shares them with Meta AI, while X’s policy covers interactions with Grok as well as public X data.

At a glance: what each control covers

Platform Who and where Data or purpose covered Control and important limit
Meta (Facebook and Instagram) The cited objection route is for people in the EU. Meta’s April 2025 announcement excludes public data from EU users under 18. For EU users, public posts and comments shared by adults, and interactions with Meta AI. Meta’s 2023 explanation discusses public Facebook and Instagram posts, including photos and text, used for consumer generative AI models. EU users can object using the form linked in Meta’s notice. The cited announcement does not establish the same route for every country.
LinkedIn LinkedIn says some data use for content-generating AI training began on November 3, 2025, for members in the EU, EEA, Switzerland, Canada, and Hong Kong. Other regions may have different settings or rules. Data categories can include profile information, prompts and usage data, certain job-related data, group activity, posts, articles, polls, comments, and feedback. The “Data for Generative AI Improvement” setting opts out of future content-generating model training. It does not affect training already completed; feedback may remain usable.
X and Grok The X Help Center describes an account-level data-sharing control. Public posts and associated metadata, public Spaces, public profile information, and interactions, inputs, and results involving Grok on X. Turn off Data Sharing under Grok & Third-party Collaborators. Feedback submitted on a conversation may still be used, and normal use of Grok-powered features may teach deployed models.
Pinterest The cited 2025 report focuses on EU users, while noting that many controls it discusses are global. It says users under 18 are not used to train Canvas. A specific opt-out covers data used to train Pinterest Canvas, an advertiser-facing generative AI tool. This is not documented as an opt-out from every Pinterest algorithm or AI/ML use.

Meta: object to use of public content in the EU

Meta’s April 2025 announcement says it planned to use public posts and comments shared by adults on its products in the EU, as well as interactions with Meta AI, to train models. It said EU users would receive a notification linking to an objection form that could be used at any time. Meta says public data from accounts of EU users under 18 is excluded. The cited route is an objection form, not evidence of a worldwide control. Meta’s 2023 explanation says public Facebook and Instagram posts, including photos and text, were part of data used to train consumer generative AI models announced at that time; it says private posts were not used for those models. Meta also says private messages with friends and family are not used unless someone shares them with Meta AI. These statements concern the described models and uses, not every use of information across Meta products. Read Meta’s explanation of its generative AI features alongside its regional notice.

LinkedIn: turn off future content-generating model training

LinkedIn’s FAQ lists profile data, generative AI prompts and other usage data, certain ongoing or future job-related data, group data, member content, and feedback among information that may be used to train models that create content. It says the described training excludes private messages, credentials, payment data, and member-provided salary or job application data attributable to a specific member.

  1. Open LinkedIn and go to Settings & Privacy.
  2. Open Data privacy, then select Data for Generative AI Improvement.
  3. Switch the setting off to opt out of future content-generating model training, including fine-tuning.

LinkedIn says this does not change training that has already taken place. Its FAQ also says feedback submitted to LinkedIn may remain usable, and points to a separate Data Processing Objection Form for certain other AI or machine-learning processing. See the LinkedIn FAQ.

Region matters: LinkedIn says it began using some data, including profile details and public posts, for content-generating AI training for members in the EU, EEA, Switzerland, Canada, and Hong Kong on November 3, 2025. Its update says the setting also controls sharing the relevant data with Microsoft for model training in the UK. For other countries, including the US, LinkedIn says that particular update did not introduce GenAI-training changes and existing settings continued to apply. Check LinkedIn’s regional update for the applicable details.

X: disable sharing for Grok and third-party collaborators

X says it may share public X data and a user’s interactions, inputs, and results with Grok on X with xAI to train and fine-tune models. Its definition of public data includes posts and associated metadata, public Spaces, and public profile information.

  1. Open Settings and privacy.
  2. Select Privacy & Safety.
  3. Open Data sharing and personalization, then Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
  4. Turn off Data Sharing.

X says opting out does not prevent use of Grok on X, but feedback submitted on a conversation may still be used for training. It also says normal use of Grok-powered features may teach deployed models. The page describes personalization separately, so changing personalization is not the same as opting out of training. Making an account private is another way X says to prevent posts from being used for training, but it changes who can see the account’s posts as well. See X’s “About Grok” help page.

Pinterest: opt out of Pinterest Canvas training

Pinterest’s 2025 Digital Services Act risk assessment says users can opt out of having their data used to train Pinterest Canvas, and that data from users under 18 is not used to train Canvas. The report describes Canvas as an advertiser-facing generative AI application and distinguishes it from traditional machine-learning recommendation models. It does not establish a general opt-out from every Pinterest AI or algorithmic use. See the Pinterest 2025 Digital Services Act risk assessment for the documented scope.

What an opt-out does not necessarily do

  • It may not reverse past training. LinkedIn explicitly says its setting does not affect training already completed. The reviewed platform materials do not establish that a trained model can be reliably “untrained” by opting out.
  • It may not cover every AI use. LinkedIn distinguishes content-generating model training from other AI/ML processing; Pinterest’s Canvas control is narrower than all recommendation or AI systems; X separates training data sharing from personalization.
  • Using an AI feature can have separate consequences. Meta says private messages are not used unless shared with Meta AI. X describes Grok interactions and feedback as relevant to training, with specific caveats even after opting out.
  • Scope can depend on region and age. Meta’s cited objection route is EU-specific; LinkedIn’s regional update names particular markets; Meta and Pinterest identify protections for users under 18 in the contexts described.

How to check your account

  1. Open the platform’s current privacy or data settings and look specifically for controls about AI training, generative AI improvement, or data sharing. Labels and navigation may change.
  2. Read the control’s scope before switching it: note whether it concerns public posts, prompts, feedback, a named AI product, or future training only.
  3. If you are in the EU and use Meta, check the platform notification and objection form described in Meta’s announcement. Do not assume that the same form applies outside the stated region.
  4. After changing a setting, revisit it if the platform changes its policy or account interface. A setting for one model or purpose is not proof that all other processing is disabled.

The official materials cited here do not establish current opt-out instructions for TikTok or Reddit, so this article does not make claims about those services.
