Short answer: ChatGPT does not document a permanent, consumer-facing switch that blocks every news website from web-search answers or citations. You can steer one answer toward primary sources, restrict a Deep Research task to domains you choose, or have an Enterprise or Edu administrator disable web search altogether. Those controls differ in scope, and none should be described as a guaranteed, news-only filter for every ChatGPT response.
OpenAI also warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. Treat a source restriction as a way to improve research discipline, not as a substitute for opening the cited pages and checking the evidence.

What you can and cannot block
OpenAI’s web-search help documentation explains how to ask ChatGPT to search again with a specific source, date, or location. It does not describe a persistent domain blocklist for ordinary ChatGPT search. In practical terms, a prompt can request that news sites be avoided for a particular answer, but it is not a saved account preference that guarantees exclusion in future chats.

The feature lets you enter websites or domains and either restrict the work to those sites or prioritize them while still allowing broader web search, as described in OpenAI’s Deep Research FAQ. Restricting the task to your chosen domains is materially stronger than merely asking the model to prefer official sources.
#1 Best Overall
In managed Enterprise and Edu workspaces, an owner or administrator can disable ChatGPT search for affected users. That removes web search broadly; it does not create a news-only filter. The relevant controls and role-based permissions are documented in ChatGPT search for Enterprise and Edu.
Compare the available controls
| Control | Where it applies | Does search remain available? | What it can do about news sites | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prompt steering | A single ordinary ChatGPT answer | Yes | Requests primary, government, academic, or other named sources and asks ChatGPT not to use or cite news sites | It is a request for that response, not a documented permanent blocklist |
| Retry with a specified source | An ordinary search answer that needs correction | Yes | Asks ChatGPT to search again using a named source, date, or location | OpenAI documents the retry capability, not a guarantee that every unwanted domain will disappear |
| Deep Research restriction | One Deep Research task | Yes, within the selected scope | Restricts the task to domains you enter; you can also choose a less strict priority mode | Only affects that task, and you should inspect the finished report’s sources |
| Enterprise or Edu search setting | Users or groups in a managed workspace | No for users whose search is disabled | Prevents web search, so news citations from web search cannot be returned | It disables all web search, not news websites alone |
| Atlas page visibility | On-page assistance in ChatGPT Atlas | Not a ChatGPT Search filter | Controls whether Atlas can read a site’s page content for assistance | It is separate from chat history and Data controls and is not documented as a citation-domain filter |
For an ordinary ChatGPT answer: steer the source choice explicitly
Use a precise instruction when you want a one-off answer without news coverage. The wording should define both the allowed source class and what ChatGPT should do if that evidence is insufficient.
- State the source rule. Ask for primary sources, official documentation, court opinions, standards bodies, company filings, or another clearly defined class. Name particular domains when you know them.
- State the exclusion. Say not to use or cite news websites for this answer. Avoid vague wording such as “use better sources,” which leaves the source class undefined.
- Require an uncertainty statement. Tell ChatGPT to say what remains unknown if the allowed sources do not establish an answer. This reduces pressure to fill gaps with less suitable coverage.
- Request citations and inspect them. A source rule is useful only if the returned links follow it and actually support the nearby claim.
You can use this template:
Answer using only primary sources and official documentation. Do not use or cite news websites. If the approved sources cannot establish an answer, say what remains unknown. List the sources and explain which claim each one supports.
If the response still contains a news link, ask ChatGPT to search again using a named official source or a specified source type. OpenAI’s search guidance supports retrying with a specific source, date, or location, but it does not promise that a prompt will function as a permanent domain exclusion.

When this approach is appropriate
- Checking a product’s documented feature, an agency rule, a legal text, a standards requirement, or a company’s own filing.
- Building a short answer where you can name the authoritative domains in advance.
- Reducing secondary reporting when you need the underlying announcement or original document.
When it is not enough
- Questions that depend on eyewitness reporting, local developments, or independent verification may have no complete answer in primary documents.
- A model can misunderstand a source, cite a page that does not support its wording, or miss a relevant page even when you supplied a source rule.
- Ordinary search has no documented consumer setting that saves your “never use news” preference for every future conversation.
Use Deep Research when the source boundary must be stronger
Deep Research provides a per-task source control. OpenAI’s Deep Research documentation says you can restrict research to only the websites or domains you enter, or prioritize those sites while still permitting full-web search. Choose restriction when a news-free result is a requirement rather than a preference.
- Start a Deep Research task and define the question narrowly enough that the approved domains can answer it.
- Open the source controls or source panel. Enter the official or primary domains you want considered, such as a regulator, standards organization, court, university, or the relevant company’s documentation site.
- Select the restrictive mode. Use the option that limits the task to the selected sites, rather than the option that merely prioritizes them while retaining full-web search.
- Describe the fallback. Ask the report to identify unanswered points instead of silently expanding beyond the allowed domains.
- Review the completed report’s source list. Confirm that every cited page belongs to an approved domain and that each citation supports the sentence where it appears.
Prioritizing domains is useful when you want official material to rank first but still need broader context. It is not equivalent to excluding news sites: a full-web search may still discover and cite them. Restriction is the appropriate choice when the source boundary is non-negotiable.
A practical Deep Research instruction
Restrict this task to the domains listed in the source panel. Do not search, quote, or cite news websites. For any claim the approved domains do not establish, mark it as unknown rather than expanding the search. At the end, list every source URL used.
Source restriction improves traceability, but it does not guarantee that the selected sites contain current, complete, or internally consistent information. You still need to read the cited pages and check publication dates, versions, jurisdiction, and definitions.

Enterprise and Edu: disable search for a workspace
Workspace owners and administrators can enable or disable ChatGPT search for Enterprise and Edu users and GPTs created in the workspace. Some workspaces also expose role-based search permissions. If an administrator turns search off for a user, that user cannot use ChatGPT web search, so web-search news citations cannot appear through that feature.

This is a broad governance control. It also removes access to official web pages, documentation, and other non-news sources, so it is suitable when an organization prohibits external browsing altogether, not when it merely wants to avoid publishers in favor of primary sources.
Questions for an administrator
- Does the policy apply to every user, a group, or only selected custom GPTs?
- Are role-based permissions available in this workspace, and who can change them?
- What approved internal repositories or document systems should users use after web search is disabled?
- How will users handle claims that require current public information?
Because workspace settings and available roles can vary, follow the controls shown in the administrator’s Enterprise or Edu interface and verify the result with a test account.
Why Atlas page visibility is not a news-site filter
ChatGPT Atlas has a “ChatGPT page visibility” setting that governs whether Atlas can read a site’s page content for on-page assistance. OpenAI’s Atlas browsing-settings documentation describes this setting as separate from chat history and Data controls. It does not document page visibility as a way to filter ChatGPT Search citations by domain.
Turning page visibility off may prevent on-page assistance from reading content, but it should not be presented as a control over which websites ordinary ChatGPT Search discovers or cites. Treat Atlas page visibility and ChatGPT Search source selection as separate features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat to do when a news citation still appears
- Check the request. Make sure the instruction said “do not use or cite news websites,” identified the acceptable source class, and required an uncertainty statement.
- Ask for a targeted retry. Request a new search using a named official source, domain, date, or location, as supported by OpenAI’s search guidance.
- Remove unsupported wording. If the only evidence for a sentence is a news article and no approved source confirms it, ask ChatGPT to label the point unverified or omit it.
- Use Deep Research restriction for the next attempt. Enter the approved domains in the source panel and select the mode that restricts the task to those sites.
- Audit the links yourself. Open each citation, check that it is the original page rather than a commentary page, and compare the page’s date and scope with the claim.
Do not assume that a citation is correct merely because it appears in a Sources list. OpenAI states that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect in its web-search help article.

A source-audit checklist for news-free answers
- Domain: Is the URL on an approved primary or official domain?
- Proximity: Does the cited page directly support the sentence, or does it merely discuss the general topic?
- Authority: Is the publisher responsible for the underlying data, rule, product, or decision?
- Date: Is the page current for the question’s time period, and has a newer version replaced it?
- Scope: Do geography, edition, plan, user role, and technical version match your situation?
- Completeness: Are important claims missing because the allowed domains do not cover them?
- Uncertainty: Does the answer clearly mark what the approved sources do not establish?
Choosing the right method
Use a normal prompt when you need a quick, one-off answer and can inspect the links. Use Deep Research restriction when the report must stay within a known set of domains and you can spend time reviewing the source list. Ask an Enterprise or Edu administrator to disable search only when the policy is to block external web search generally. Atlas page visibility belongs to on-page assistance and should not be selected as a search-citation control.
The practical goal is therefore not a universal “news switch.” It is a documented control matched to the scope of your task, followed by a human check that the returned sources are both acceptable and evidentially sufficient.
