Sometimes. A Japanese flip phone can continue working after a carrier retires 3G if the exact handset supports that carrier’s 4G or 5G network, supports VoLTE for voice calls, uses a compatible plan, and has the required settings enabled. A 3G-only phone cannot keep using a carrier’s 3G service after shutdown.
Do not decide from the words “flip phone” or even “4G” alone. Identify the carrier and exact model number, then check the carrier’s current compatibility guidance and VoLTE requirements before relying on the phone or buying a replacement.

What a network shutdown actually changes
“Japanese flip phone” describes a form factor and a market category, not one radio standard. Phones sold in Japan include older 3G handsets, newer 4G models, and models with varying support for carrier-specific bands, plans and services.
When a carrier shuts down 3G, it stops operating the network technology used by 3G-only handsets. Those phones cannot register for service afterward, so calls, text messages and mobile data stop on that carrier. The phone may still power on and perform offline tasks such as using its camera, alarm or stored contacts, but it no longer has mobile service.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
A 4G handset can still be affected. On modern networks, voice calls commonly use Voice over LTE (VoLTE). A phone may show a 4G connection yet fail to place or receive calls if its VoLTE implementation is unsupported for that carrier, disabled in settings, or blocked by the customer’s plan. Data may continue while voice fails, or several functions may become unavailable.
Carrier shutdown dates confirmed in the official notices
| Carrier | 3G service change | What customers need to continue service |
|---|---|---|
| NTT Docomo | FOMA 3G and i-mode ended March 31, 2026. | A 4G/5G-compatible handset, plan and service. Some 4G models lose voice calling or other functions, especially where VoLTE support is missing. |
| SoftBank | 3G ended in most of Japan on April 15, 2024, and in Ishikawa Prefecture on July 31, 2024. | A compatible 4G and/or 5G handset and price plan, with handset, contract and settings all meeting compatibility requirements. |
These dates do not mean every Japanese flip phone stopped working. They mean a handset that depended on the retired 3G network could no longer use that network. Compatible phones may continue on 4G or 5G, subject to the carrier, model, plan and settings.
KDDI’s shutdown timing is not established by the official carrier material covered here. Check KDDI’s current notice directly rather than applying Docomo or SoftBank dates to a KDDI handset.
The four checks that determine whether your phone still works
1. Exact model number
Find the model identifier on the label beneath the battery, on the original packaging, in the phone’s settings, or in the carrier account. A family name is not enough: closely related variants can have different radios, firmware and carrier approvals.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Write down the complete model code, including regional or carrier suffixes. Compatibility guidance is normally organized by that exact identifier.
2. Network generations and bands
Confirm whether the model supports the intended carrier’s 4G or 5G network. A phone described as “4G” may support only some frequencies, or may have been designed for a different carrier. If it cannot attach to the carrier’s LTE network, it cannot replace its retired 3G connection.
3. VoLTE for the intended carrier
Check that the phone supports VoLTE on the carrier you plan to use. Docomo explicitly warns that even 4G-compatible models without VoLTE lose voice calling and may lose other functions after FOMA ended. SoftBank likewise identifies non-VoLTE-compatible devices or contracts as a cause of lost voice and data service.

The handset and account must agree. A compatible phone on an obsolete 3G plan may still require a plan change. A supported phone with VoLTE switched off can also fail. Docomo states that VoLTE OFF prevents voice calls after FOMA ended; SoftBank lists handset, contract and setting incompatibility among the causes of service loss.

How to check a phone before relying on it
- Identify the carrier. Check the SIM, account, invoice or the logo and original purchase record. Imported phones may have been sold for one Japanese carrier but used with another.
- Record the complete model number. Do not rely on a product nickname, color name or the generic term “Japanese flip phone.”
- Open the carrier’s current affected-device or compatibility page. Search for the exact model and read the post-shutdown notes, not just the headline stating that the phone supports 4G.
- Verify VoLTE explicitly. Look for the carrier’s VoLTE-compatible list or a statement that voice service works on that model. If the carrier does not list the model, treat compatibility as unconfirmed.
- Check the account or plan. Confirm that the line is on a 4G/5G-compatible plan and that the carrier permits the handset on that plan.
- Inspect the phone’s network settings. If a VoLTE or “4G calling” option exists, turn it on as directed by the carrier. Menu names differ by model, so do not assume that a visible 4G icon means VoLTE is active.
- Test the functions you actually need. In the intended location, place and receive a call, send a text, use mobile data, and test any carrier-dependent legacy service. Repeat after restarting the phone and after inserting the intended SIM.
What the symptoms mean
The phone has no signal after the shutdown
The most likely causes are a 3G-only radio, unsupported LTE bands, an unapproved model or an incompatible plan. Confirm the model against the carrier’s list. If the model is 3G-only, settings changes cannot restore mobile service; replacement or a carrier-supported alternative is required.
Data works, but calls do not
This pattern points to VoLTE. Confirm that the model supports the carrier’s VoLTE service, that VoLTE is enabled, and that the account is provisioned for a compatible plan. A 4G icon by itself does not prove that voice calling is available.
Calls work, but data or messaging does not
Check the plan, access-point configuration and the carrier’s model-specific restrictions. The carrier may permit voice while limiting data or other functions on a model that does not meet every post-shutdown requirement.
The phone worked before the shutdown but fails after moving the SIM
That does not prove the handset is universally compatible. Carrier variants can differ, and a plan or network-registration rule may be tied to the original carrier. Recheck the exact model against the new carrier’s guidance rather than relying on the previous setup.

Docomo: what changed on March 31, 2026
NTT Docomo ended FOMA 3G and the related i-mode service on March 31, 2026. A customer who wanted to remain with Docomo needed to move to a 4G/5G-compatible plan, handset and service.
Docomo’s warning is especially important for flip-phone owners: some 4G models also lose voice calling or other functions. Its official announcement says, in translation, that even among 4G-compatible models, those without VoLTE cannot make voice calls and some functions become unavailable. Therefore, a Docomo handset should be checked by exact model and VoLTE status, not by its 4G label.

SoftBank ended 3G service in most of Japan on April 15, 2024, and completed the change in Ishikawa Prefecture on July 31, 2024. Its official notice says customers on 3G services had to switch to 4G and/or 5G price plans and compatible mobile handsets to continue using SoftBank mobile communication services.

A 3G-only handset, a non-VoLTE-compatible device or contract, or an incompatible configuration can result in loss of voice and data service. A phone that worked in one region or under one account therefore should not be assumed to work after a carrier or plan change.

Should you replace the phone?
Replacement is appropriate when the model is 3G-only, the carrier does not approve it for 4G/5G service, or VoLTE calling is unavailable and cannot be enabled. It is also the practical choice when the carrier’s compatibility page does not list the model and reliable calling is important.
A useful search phrase is 4G VoLTE-compatible flip phone. Treat that phrase as a starting point, not proof of compatibility. Before buying, obtain the exact model number and check it against the intended carrier’s current list. The official notices reviewed here do not establish any particular model’s compatibility, stock or price.
Keep the old handset only for offline functions unless the carrier confirms that mobile service remains supported. If emergency calling, two-factor authentication or dependable incoming calls matter, test the replacement with the intended SIM and plan before discarding the old phone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA practical decision tree
- 3G-only model: It cannot use the carrier’s network after 3G shutdown. Move to a supported handset and plan.
- 4G model with confirmed carrier VoLTE, compatible plan and enabled setting: It may continue working; verify by testing calls, texts and data.
- 4G model with no carrier-specific VoLTE confirmation: Treat voice service as uncertain and do not rely on the phone until the carrier confirms it.
- Model listed as restricted or incompatible: Follow the carrier’s replacement or upgrade process.
- Unknown carrier or model: Identify both before buying accessories, changing plans or assuming service will continue.
The key distinction to remember
The question is not whether a flip phone can survive a shutdown. The question is whether that exact handset can register for the carrier’s post-shutdown network and place voice calls through the carrier’s required VoLTE service. For Docomo, the decisive date was March 31, 2026; for SoftBank, the 2024 dates above. In every case, model, carrier, plan and settings must be checked together.
