In How to Fish, defeating the final boss ends the main story but does not end your save. After the credits, your character returns to the starting island with equipment and progression intact, so you can continue catching missing fish and pursuing unfinished achievements, trophies, and other objectives.
The important distinction is between finishing the story and finishing everything. The story concludes when you leave Island 5 (the Volcano) by RHIB after completing the final delivery. The game’s post-credits crash looks dramatic, but it is not a full save reset.

What counts as the ending in How to Fish?
The final boss encounter is only part of the ending sequence. The story takes place on Island 5, known as the Volcano, and the credits do not roll immediately when the Mutated Bowhead Whale is defeated. You must complete the remaining objective chain before the game treats the campaign as finished.
The complete final sequence
- Buy the Fish Bucket.
- Summon the Bowhead Whale.
- Defeat the Bowhead Whale.
- Throw the whale’s body into the Volcano.
- Defeat the resulting Mutated Bowhead Whale.
- Collect the Whale Fin.
- Give the Whale Fin to the scientist at the camp.
- Take the RHIB keys.
- Use the RHIB to leave for the mainland.
Only after you deliver the Whale Fin, obtain the keys and depart by RHIB does the story-ending sequence proceed to the credits. The “We are so back” achievement is awarded during this conclusion.

Does beating the final boss lock you out of collectibles?
No. Beating the Mutated Bowhead Whale does not permanently close the world or force a new playthrough. The save remains usable after the ending, and the equipment and progression you had before the credits are retained.
That means an unfinished fish collection is a cleanup task, not a missed-opportunity problem. The same applies to achievements and trophies that you did not earn during the story. You can return to those goals after seeing the credits instead of restarting the campaign from the beginning.
What happens after the credits?
After the credits, the game crashes back to the starting island. This presentation can make it appear that the game has erased or reset your progress, but the crash is not a full reset. Your established equipment and progression remain available when you continue.

What is not implied by the ending
- The credits do not certify that every fish has been caught.
- The credits do not automatically award every achievement or trophy.
- The crash does not create a full campaign reset.
- The ending does not provide a documented New Game+ mode at launch.
Story completion versus 100% completion
Think of the game as having two separate finish lines. Story completion means following the Island 5 objective chain, handing the Whale Fin to the scientist and leaving by RHIB. Total completion means adding the remaining collection and challenge work to that story clear.

How to continue toward 100% after the ending
You do not need a special post-game menu or a second campaign. Use the existing save and treat the return to the starting island as your base for cleanup.

Step 1: Confirm that the story is actually complete
If you have only defeated the Mutated Bowhead Whale, you may still be inside the ending sequence rather than in the post-game. Check that you collected the Whale Fin, delivered it to the scientist at camp, took the RHIB keys and used the RHIB to leave for the mainland. The credits and the “We are so back” achievement follow that departure.

Step 2: Let the credits finish
Allow the ending sequence to proceed until the game returns you to the starting island. The return is the point at which you can verify that you are in the retained post-credits state rather than still completing the final objective.
Step 3: Check your equipment and progression
Use the post-credits return as a save-continuity check. Your equipment and progression should still be present. Because the game does not treat the crash as a full reset, seeing the starting island again is not a reason to restart the campaign.
Step 4: Make a list of unfinished goals
Separate your remaining work into the categories the game supports: uncollected fish, achievements, trophies and any other objectives you have not completed. This prevents the story clear from being mistaken for a complete checklist.

Return to fishing and catch every species still absent from your collection. The ending information specifically confirms that uncollected fish can be pursued after the credits, so a partial collection is not permanently locked by leaving the Volcano.

Step 6: Clean up achievements and trophies
Review the achievements and trophies you have not earned, then complete their conditions from the retained progression. The story-ending achievement is only one award; the post-game remains available for other achievement and trophy work.
Step 7: Verify completion in the game’s own trackers
Use whatever collection, achievement or trophy tracking the game presents to confirm that each category is finished. The available information does not specify a single universal “100%” percentage display, so rely on the relevant in-game lists rather than assuming that the credits themselves are the final checkmark.

“I beat the boss, so why did the credits not start?”
Defeating the Mutated Bowhead Whale is not the final trigger by itself. The Whale Fin must be delivered to the scientist, the RHIB keys must be obtained and the RHIB must be used to leave for the mainland. Until those steps are complete, you have not finished the full ending route.

“The game sent me back to the first island. Did it wipe my save?”
No. The post-credits crash returns you to the starting island but does not function as a full reset. Equipment and progression are retained, which is why you can continue with cleanup goals.

“Do I need to replay the whole story for one missing fish?”
No. The retained save is specifically intended to let you continue after the story. You can pursue missing fish and other unfinished objectives without replaying the campaign from the beginning.
“Does the ending guarantee that every achievement is available?”
The available ending information confirms that unfinished achievements and trophies can be pursued afterward. It does not provide a complete list of individual requirements or guarantee that every condition is tied to a particular location, so check each outstanding objective’s own requirement while you work.
“Can I start a New Game+ run with my old equipment?”
No New Game+ mode was reported at launch. Post-game continuation and New Game+ are different concepts: the former lets you keep playing the existing save, while the latter would be a separate replay mode with carry-over progression.
A practical post-game checklist
- Confirm that the Whale Fin was delivered to the scientist.
- Confirm that you took the RHIB keys.
- Confirm that you used the RHIB to leave the Volcano for the mainland.
- Watch for the credits and the “We are so back” achievement.
- After the return to the starting island, verify that equipment and progression remain.
- Record every fish still missing from the collection.
- Record every unearned achievement and trophy.
- Complete the remaining objectives from the retained save.
- Check the game’s own trackers rather than treating the credits as a 100% certificate.
What the ending means for a completionist playthrough
The safest way to plan a completionist run is to treat the final boss as the end of the story arc, not as a last-chance checkpoint for every optional task. You can defeat the boss when you are ready, complete the Whale Fin delivery and RHIB departure, then use the post-credits state for cleanup.
This also means you do not have to delay the ending solely because your fish collection or achievement list is incomplete. The retained save preserves the tools and progress needed to continue, and the game’s return to the starting island is part of that continuation behavior rather than a punishment for finishing the story.
If you prefer to organize everything before the finale, you can still do so, but it is a choice rather than a requirement established by the ending. The documented behavior supports either approach: finish optional goals before leaving Island 5, or finish the story first and clean up afterward.
The bottom line for reaching 100%
Yes, you can still reach 100% completion after beating the final boss in How to Fish. Finish the entire Island 5 departure sequence to see the credits, then continue from the starting island after the post-credits crash. Because your equipment and progression remain intact, missing fish, achievements, trophies and other unfinished objectives can be completed without restarting the campaign. The only separate limitation documented at launch is that there is no New Game+ mode; post-game cleanup takes place on your existing save.
