What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Sometimes—but not automatically. A game usually remains playable when its single-player or local modes run entirely on your device and do not require the developer’s servers. An always-online game can become partly or completely unusable when its authentication, matchmaking, cloud saves, live events, or simulation servers disappear. Keeping a game in your library, owning a disc, or retaining installed files does not guarantee that it will still launch.
The deciding factor is what runs locally
A developer’s closure is not itself a technical shutdown. The practical question is whether the game depends on a service that the company no longer operates. Code, graphics, levels and local save files may remain on your computer or console, while the checks that authorize launch or deliver progression happen elsewhere.

Games with a self-contained campaign can often continue indefinitely after online support ends. You may lose multiplayer, cloud synchronization, news feeds, leaderboards or event rewards, but the local portion still starts. By contrast, a game whose world simulation, inventory, matchmaking or authentication is hosted remotely can fail even when every client file is still installed.

How different dependencies affect playability
| Game dependency | What happens if the developer’s servers close | Likely result for the player |
|---|---|---|
| Fully offline campaign and local saves | The game logic and saves remain on the device. | Single-player and local modes generally continue, subject to operating-system, hardware and DRM compatibility. |
| Optional online multiplayer | Matchmaking, hosted sessions, rankings and online statistics stop. | Offline campaign or local multiplayer may remain; online modes do not. |
| Cloud saves or account-backed progression | Remote saves, inventories, achievements or profiles may become inaccessible. | Local play can survive, but progress may be lost or limited to existing local data. |
| Periodic authentication or launcher check | The client can no longer verify a license or sign in. | Launch may fail even if the game itself is installed and designed for solo play. |
| Always-online simulation | The server runs the world, missions, economy or combat state. | Most or all of the game becomes unplayable without a replacement server. |
| Live events and service content | Events, challenges, news, rotating rewards and seasonal content end. | The permanent base content may remain, but time-limited systems disappear. |
These categories can overlap. A title may preserve its campaign while losing account recovery, or keep local saves but refuse to open because its launcher still performs an online check.
What you retain when a developer closes
A library record is not a playability guarantee
Steam’s retirement guidance states that “Retired games will remain in players’ Steam libraries.” Delisting therefore generally prevents new purchases rather than removing an existing account entry. The entry can let you download the installer again, but it does not bypass the game’s own launcher, digital-rights-management (DRM) check, account requirement or server calls.
A platform record proves that the title is associated with your account under the platform’s terms. It does not promise that every feature will launch forever, that a discontinued launcher will authenticate, or that an operating-system update will preserve compatibility.
Digital purchases are licensed access
A digital purchase normally gives you a license to use software under the platform and publisher agreements, rather than transferring ownership of the publisher’s intellectual property. Ubisoft’s EULA, for example, says the product and intellectual-property rights belong to Ubisoft or its licensors and warns that an internet connection, a Ubisoft account and the Ubisoft Connect client may be required for online services and features.
That legal arrangement can coexist with practical control of the files. You may have an installer and a library entry while still depending on a third party to authenticate them. A physical disc has the same limitation when the disc contains only a client that must contact a server.

Physical media varies by title
A disc or cartridge is most durable when it contains a complete executable and the game’s essential data. Some releases still require a day-one patch, platform authentication or a live backend. Check the title’s documented launch requirements rather than assuming that physical media means offline access.
What a server shutdown can remove
“Support ended” is not one event. A publisher can stop issuing patches while leaving servers online, retire servers while leaving offline play intact, or discontinue account services before closing multiplayer. Read the specific end-of-service notice for the features and dates it names.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Online multiplayer: matchmaking, dedicated servers, invitations and player-hosted services can stop working.
- Cloud data: synchronized saves, profiles, inventories and account recovery may no longer be available.
- Live systems: news, rotating events, seasonal challenges and time-limited rewards can disappear.
- Social and competitive records: statistics, rankings, replays, clubs and achievement synchronization may be retired.
- Authentication: a launcher or DRM service can block startup if it cannot validate the installation.
Official shutdown notices often distinguish these layers. Ubisoft’s decommissioning notice says, “Please note that the offline features of the games are unaffected and remain available to you,” while warning that online multiplayer, in-game news, player statistics and some challenge-related rewards may be shut down or retired. Electronic Arts’ service-update language similarly says that when online services are no longer available or supported, “the game may still be played and enjoyed offline.” Those statements describe a common split, not a promise for every title.
A 2026 European Commission analysis notes that modern games increasingly rely on company-run servers. It separates servers used for optional multiplayer or live events from always-online authentication and DRM. The latter can remove access to the whole game, so the label “single-player” alone is not enough to assess risk.

- Find the service-status or end-of-service notice. Search the publisher’s support site for the title, “service update,” “decommissioning” or “end of service.” Note which functions are being retired and on what date.
- Verify an offline or local mode. Look for an explicit offline campaign, local split-screen or local network option. “Single-player” is not proof that the game can start without a connection.
- List launch requirements. Check for a publisher account, separate launcher, internet connection, periodic sign-in, DRM activation or platform authentication. A one-time activation and a recurring check have different failure risks.
- Map the data path. Determine whether saves, inventory, progression, missions, world simulation or matchmaking are stored locally or on a server. Review the manual, support documentation and in-game settings for local-save options.
- Test the offline path while the service works. Sign out or disconnect after a successful launch, then start the game and load a save. Test a new game as well as an existing save; some titles cache authorization only temporarily.
- Confirm reinstall access. Check whether your storefront still lets your account download the title after delisting and whether an installer or required launcher is separately preserved.
- Preserve permitted data. Keep installers, patches, local saves and configuration backups only in ways allowed by the platform terms and applicable law. Do not assume that copying files defeats DRM or recreates a server.
Can you reinstall a delisted game?
Often, an existing license remains visible in the account library even when the public store page and new sales disappear. Steam’s stated policy for retired games is that they remain in players’ libraries. Other platforms can apply different rules, and a publisher can also withdraw a required launcher or authentication service.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBefore deleting a working installation, check three separate points: whether the account still lists the title, whether the platform still serves its files, and whether the game can pass its launch checks after installation. A library listing answers only the first question. If a required patch, launcher or server is unavailable, reinstalling may produce the same failure as launching an old copy.
For physical releases, retain the disc and any legally obtained patches needed by that edition. A disc can preserve the base program but cannot restore a closed backend, deleted account or discontinued matchmaking service.
Ownership, access and support are separate questions
When people ask whether they “own” a game forever, they are usually combining three different issues:
- Access rights: whether the platform or publisher still recognizes your license and lets you download or launch the software.
- Technical operation: whether the installed client can run without authentication, servers or a compatible operating environment.
- Service support: whether anyone maintains servers, publishes fixes, answers account requests or restores lost data.
These can end at different times. A company may stop customer-service responses while leaving an offline executable untouched. It may keep a store listing but retire multiplayer. It may preserve a download while ending cloud saves. Treat every notice as a list of specific changes, not as a single yes-or-no statement about the entire product.

What to do before a shutdown
For an offline-capable game
- Launch it while online, complete any activation and confirm that a local save loads.
- Disconnect temporarily and test both an existing save and a new game.
- Back up saves and configuration files in the locations documented for your platform.
- Keep a permitted installer or physical copy and note the patch version that worked.
For an online-dependent game
- Download screenshots, replays or other personal records that the service allows you to export.
- Spend or use time-limited items only if you accept that they may disappear with the service.
- Check whether the publisher is offering a replacement, transfer or offline mode.
- Do not expect a local backup to recreate server-side inventories, matchmaking or world simulation.
Legal and refund considerations
There is no single worldwide rule guaranteeing permanent playability or an automatic refund when a game becomes unusable. Outcomes depend on your country, the contract, the platform and the reason access ended.
A European Parliament response concerning EU Directive 2019/770 explains that the directive does not impose one universal duration for supplying online games. Where digital content fails to conform, possible remedies can include bringing it into conformity, a proportionate price reduction or termination, depending on the circumstances. A planned service termination, a defective supply and a third-party platform failure may be treated differently.
Keep the purchase receipt, the service notice and evidence of the actual failure. Then check the consumer authority or dispute process in your jurisdiction and the platform’s stated refund window. Do not assume that a general “no refunds” clause overrides every local consumer protection, or that every shutdown automatically creates a refund right.
How to compare two games for shutdown resilience
| Comparison question | Lower-risk answer | Higher-risk answer |
|---|---|---|
| Can the core campaign start offline? | Yes, with no recurring check. | No, or only after a server sign-in. |
| Where is progression stored? | Local saves that can be backed up. | Inventory, missions or saves held exclusively on a service. |
| How is multiplayer delivered? | Local play or documented self-hosted options. | Publisher-operated matchmaking or dedicated servers only. |
| What does the launcher require? | Platform authentication that works offline after installation. | A separate launcher, account or periodic DRM validation. |
| What does the end-of-service policy say? | Offline features explicitly remain available. | No offline statement, or the notice says the simulation will be disabled. |
This framework is more reliable than judging by genre, price, age or whether a box says “single-player.” Verify the actual edition’s launch path and data storage.

Common situations and the likely outcome
The developer closes, but the storefront remains online
The game may continue normally if its servers and launcher are still operated by another company or are no longer required. Closure of the original studio does not automatically terminate a platform license or every backend.

The game is delisted but servers remain
Existing players can often continue using online features, and a retained library entry may permit redownload. New players generally cannot acquire a license through the normal store. The arrangement can change later if the publisher retires the service.
The servers close while the campaign is offline-capable
Expect the campaign and local modes to remain only if the client does not perform a mandatory online check. Multiplayer, cloud data, events, rankings and account features can disappear independently.
The servers close for an always-online game
If authentication or the core simulation is remote, the installed files are insufficient. Without an official offline conversion, a replacement server or a lawful community-supported option, the game may no longer launch or function.
A practical rule for deciding what remains playable
Classify the title by its most essential dependency, not by its marketing label. If the essential loop runs locally and the launch path can be completed offline, continued play is plausible after support ends. If the essential loop or authorization lives on the company’s servers, assume that a shutdown can remove access. A library entry, disc or backup improves your chances of preserving files; only an offline-capable design removes the need for the company’s service.
